    Correlation Between the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Irradiated Fe-9Cr ODS

    The growing global demand for energy will increasingly call upon fusion reactors and Generation IV nuclear fission reactors to supply safe and reliable energy worldwide. Ferritic/martensitic (F/M) alloys are leading candidates for structural components in these reactors because of their high strength, dimensional stability, and low activation. In novel reactor concepts, these materials will be subject to extreme operating conditions, accumulating doses of irradiation up to a few hundred displacements per atom (dpa) at temperatures as high as 600°C. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) F/M alloys containing a dispersion of Y-Ti-0 nanoclusters have been developed to operate at even higher temperatures

    Restoration vs. New Construction: How to Make the Right Decision

    Restoration or new construction? That is a dilemma that educational leaders, particularly superintendents and school business officials, have had to wrestle with for years. In the past, state regulations often dictated whether school buildings should be renovated or torn down to make way for new construction. State reimbursement guidelines favored new construction over restoration for public school development by either withholding funds or denying the full state support for restoration projects. In fact, some states established complex formulas that mandated new construction if the cost of restoration exceeded approximately two-thirds of the new construction costs. Reversing the mindset among many educators and legislators that new construction is always the best option for districts has not been an easy sell for designers, preservationists, and school architects. However, restoration of school properties has been on the rise in recent years, fueled by citizens’ interest in maintaining community landmarks, by districts’ recognition of the importance of preserving existing schools as important community institutions, and by demonstrating that the restoration of aging buildings can be a cost-effective way to preserve history and create safe and exciting educational facilities

    Principal Dispositions Regarding the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System

    The Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) was first implemented during the 2013-14 school term. This study examined principals’ dispositions at the end of this school term. Findings revealed several major concerns. The most prominent were (a) not having sufficient time to implement the program properly, (b) basing a teacher’s performance heavily on student value-added data, and (c) being required to assist teachers in developing their annual improvement plans. Three independent variables, teaching experience, administrative experience, and level of school assignment, were found to have only a low level of association with principal dispositions. With respect to teacher evaluation generally, findings here were consistent with earlier studies reporting mixed principal dispositions; with respect to OTES specifically, findings here were consistent with studies in other states reporting that principal dispositions were more negative than positive

    Student Motives for Taking Online Courses in Educational Administration

    This study was conducted with students enrolled in a master’s degree program in educational administration at a private research university that offered all required courses in both online and in-class formats. The purposes were to determine (a) the extent to which online courses were selected, (b) the level of importance students placed on four common motives for taking online courses, and (c) levels of association between the importance of values and two demographic variables (employment level and years of teaching experience). The extent to which students took online courses varied considerably. Convenience and flexibility were the most important motives and instructional preference was the least important motive. Although associations between each motive and the two demographic variables were small, the correlation coefficients for convenience and teaching experience and for flexibility and teaching experience were slightly higher than the others
