A Quantum Adiabatic Evolution Algorithm Applied to Random Instances of an NP-Complete Problem
A quantum system will stay near its instantaneous ground state if the
Hamiltonian that governs its evolution varies slowly enough. This quantum
adiabatic behavior is the basis of a new class of algorithms for quantum
computing. We test one such algorithm by applying it to randomly generated,
hard, instances of an NP-complete problem. For the small examples that we can
simulate, the quantum adiabatic algorithm works well, and provides evidence
that quantum computers (if large ones can be built) may be able to outperform

Distribution of an Exotic Pest, \u3ci\u3eAgromyza Frontella\u3c/i\u3e (Diptera: Agromyzidae), in Manitoba, Canada.
Agromyza frontella is an exotic alfalfa pest from Europe that was first detected in North America in 1968 and has since spread westward into Ontario and the north central United States. Informal surveys had detected A. frontella in Manitoba, but its distribution throughout this province was unknown. In 1998 we collected alfalfa stems to detect plant damage and sweep samples to detect adult A. frontella and the parasitoid Dacnusa dryas throughout the alfalfa growing region of Manitoba. In south central Manitoba, 100% of stems were damaged by A. frontella, and\u3e 100 adults/10 sweeps were recorded at several sites. In west central Manitoba, no plants were damaged and \u3c 10 adults/10 sweeps were observed. We believe this region to be near the western edge of A. frontella distribution. The most important introduced parasitoid of A. frontella, D. dryas, was not detected which suggests that D. dryas has not invaded Manitoba
Improving the Sensitivity of Advanced LIGO Using Noise Subtraction
This paper presents an adaptable, parallelizable method for subtracting
linearly coupled noise from Advanced LIGO data. We explain the features
developed to ensure that the process is robust enough to handle the variability
present in Advanced LIGO data. In this work, we target subtraction of noise due
to beam jitter, detector calibration lines, and mains power lines. We
demonstrate noise subtraction over the entirety of the second observing run,
resulting in increases in sensitivity comparable to those reported in previous
targeted efforts. Over the course of the second observing run, we see a 30%
increase in Advanced LIGO sensitivity to gravitational waves from a broad range
of compact binary systems. We expect the use of this method to result in a
higher rate of detected gravitational-wave signals in Advanced LIGO data.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
RFI Identification and Mitigation Using Simultaneous Dual Station Observations
RFI mitigation is a critically important issue in radio astronomy using
existing instruments as well as in the development of next-generation radio
telescopes, such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). Most designs for the SKA
involve multiple stations with spacings of up to a few thousands of kilometers
and thus can exploit the drastically different RFI environments at different
stations. As demonstrator observations and analysis for SKA-like instruments,
and to develop RFI mitigation schemes that will be useful in the near term, we
recently conducted simultaneous observations with Arecibo Observatory and the
Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The observations were aimed at diagnosing RFI and
using the mostly uncorrelated RFI between the two sites to excise RFI from
several generic kinds of measurements such as giant pulses from Crab-like
pulsars and weak HI emission from galaxies in bands heavily contaminated by
RFI. This paper presents observations, analysis, and RFI identification and
excision procedures that are effective for both time series and spectroscopy

Memory and superposition in a spin glass
Non-equilibrium dynamics in a Ag(Mn) spin glass are investigated by
measurements of the temperature dependence of the remanent magnetisation. Using
specific cooling protocols before recording the thermo- or isothermal remanent
magnetisations on re-heating, it is found that the measured curves effectively
disclose non-equilibrium spin glass characteristics such as ageing and memory
phenomena as well as an extended validity of the superposition principle for
the relaxation. The usefulness of this "simple" dc-method is discussed, as well
as its applicability to other disordered magnetic systems.Comment: REVTeX style; 8 pages, 4 figure
Scaling Law and Aging Phenomena in the Random Energy Model
We study the effect of temperature shift on aging phenomena in the Random
Energy Model (REM). From calculation on the correlation function and simulation
on the Zero-Field-Cooled magnetization, we find that the REM satisfies a
scaling relation even if temperature is shifted. Furthermore, this scaling
property naturally leads to results obtained in experiment and the droplet

Venus Interior Structure Mission (VISM): Establishing a Seismic Network on Venus
Magellan radar data show the surface of Venus to contain a wide range of geologic features (large volcanoes, extensive rift valleys, etc.). Although networks of interconnecting zones of deformation are identified, a system of spreading ridges and subduction zones like those that dominate the tectonic style of the Earth do not appear to be present. In addition, the absence of a mantle low-viscosity zone suggests a strong link between mantle dynamics and the surface. As a natural follow-on to the Magellan mission, establishing a network of seismometers on Venus will provide detailed quantitative information on the large scale interior structure of the planet. When analyzed in conjunction with image, gravity, and topography information, these data will aid in constraining mechanisms that drive surface deformation
Hepatitis B and C co-Infection are independent predictors of progressive kidney disease in HIV-positive, antiretroviral-treated adults
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV-positive individuals. Hepatitis C (HCV) co-infection has been associated with increased risk of CKD, but prior studies lack information on potential mechanisms. We evaluated the association between HCV or hepatitis B (HBV) co-infection and progressive CKD among 3,441 antiretroviral-treated clinical trial participants. Progressive CKD was defined as the composite of end-stage renal disease, renal death, or significant glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline (25% decline to eGFR 800,000 IU/ml had increased odds (OR 3.07; 95% CI 1.60–5.90). Interleukin-6, hyaluronic acid, and the FIB-4 hepatic fibrosis index were higher among participants who developed progressive CKD, but were no longer associated with progressive CKD after adjustment. Future studies should validate the relationship between HCV viremia and CKD

Aging dynamics of a reentrant ferromagnet
CuCoCl-FeCl graphite bi-intercalation compound has
been studied using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility. This compound undergoes
successive transitions at the transition temperatures ( K) and
( K). The relaxation rate exhibits a characteristic
peak at close to a wait time below , indicating that
the aging phenomena occur in both the reentrant spin glass (RSG) phase below
and the ferromagnetic (FM) phase between and . The
relaxation rate () in the FM phase
exhibits two peaks around and a time much shorter than under
the positive -shift aging, indicating a partial rejuvenation of domains. The
aging state in the FM phase is fragile against a weak magnetic-field
perturbation. The time () dependence of around is well approximated by a stretched exponential relaxation:

, , and . The relaxation time () exhibits a
local maximum around 5 K, reflecting a chaotic nature of the FM phase. It
