Nonlinear photon transport in a semiconductor waveguide-cavity system containing a single quantum dot: Anharmonic cavity-QED regime
We present a semiconductor master equation technique to study the
input/output characteristics of coherent photon transport in a semiconductor
waveguide-cavity system containing a single quantum dot. We use this approach
to investigate the effects of photon propagation and anharmonic cavity-QED for
various dot-cavity interaction strengths, including weakly-coupled,
intermediately-coupled, and strongly-coupled regimes. We demonstrate that for
mean photon numbers much less than 0.1, the commonly adopted weak excitation
(single quantum) approximation breaks down, even in the weak coupling regime.
As a measure of the anharmonic multiphoton-correlations, we compute the Fano
factor and the correlation error associated with making a semiclassical
approximation. We also explore the role of electron--acoustic-phonon scattering
and find that phonon-mediated scattering plays a qualitatively important role
on the light propagation characteristics. As an application of the theory, we
simulate a conditional phase gate at a phonon bath temperature of K in the
strong coupling regime.Comment: To appear in PR
Manufacture of DPFC-DMS polymer in the SKG range
BPFC-DMS block copolymers were synthesized on a pre-pilot scale (i.e., to 5 Kg lots) and subsequently fabricated into clear, colorless films. Details of the synthesis procedures, property determinations, and film casting techniques are presented. Solubility, viscosity and molecular weight characteristics of the resulting product are reported
Log-periodic modulation in one-dimensional random walks
We have studied the diffusion of a single particle on a one-dimensional
lattice. It is shown that, for a self-similar distribution of hopping rates,
the time dependence of the mean-square displacement follows an anomalous power
law modulated by logarithmic periodic oscillations. The origin of this
modulation is traced to the dependence on the length of the diffusion
coefficient. Both the random walk exponent and the period of the modulation are
analytically calculated and confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Phonon-dressed Mollow triplet in the regime of cavity-QED
We study the resonance fluorescence spectra of a driven quantum dot placed
inside a high semiconductor cavity and interacting with an acoustic phonon
bath. The dynamics is calculated using a time-convolutionless master equation
obtained in the polaron frame. We demonstrate pronounced spectral broadening of
the Mollow sidebands through cavity-emission which, for small cavity-coupling
rates, increases quadratically with the Rabi frequency. However, for larger
cavity coupling rates, this broadening dependence is found to be more complex.
This field-dependent Mollow triplet broadening is primarily a consequence of
the triplet peaks sampling different parts of the asymmetric phonon bath, and
agrees directly with recent experiments with semiconductor micropillars. The
influence from the detuned cavity photon bath and multi-photon effects is shown
to play a qualitatively important role on the fluorescence spectra.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The sub-millimeter properties of broad absorption line quasars
We have carried out the first systematic survey of the sub-millimeter
properties of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. 30 BAL quasars drawn from a
homogeneously selected sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at redshifts
2<z<2.6 were observed with the SCUBA array at the JCMT to a typical rms
sensitivity of 2.5 mJy. Eight quasars were detected at > 2 sigma significance,
four of which are at > 3 sigma significance. The far-infrared luminosities of
these quasars are > 10^{13} L_solar. There is no correlation of sub-millimeter
flux with either the strength of the broad absorption feature or with absolute
magnitude in our sample. We compare the sub-millimeter flux distribution of the
BAL quasar sample with that of a sample of quasars which do not show BAL
features in their optical spectra and find that the two are indistinguishable.
BAL quasars do not have higher sub-millimeter luminosities than non-BAL
quasars. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that all quasars
would contain a BAL if viewed along a certain line-of-sight. The data are
inconsistent with a model in which the BAL phenomenon indicates a special
evolutionary stage which co-incides with a large dust mass in the host galaxy
and a high sub-millimeter luminosity. Our work provides constraints on
alternative evolutionary explanations of BAL quasars.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, ApJ, in pres
For Us -- Pasture Renovation Paid Off
Renovating a permanent pasture may double its carrying capacity. And this cost probably will be less than you think
Putting New Life Into Pastures
Many of the old permanent bluegrass pastures in Iowa can almost be made “ to feed two cattle where one fed before.” We found this out from a study of the problem at Mt. Pleasant during the 6 years, 1933 to 1938. In the past 3 years some 250 Iowa farmers in 45 counties have cooperated in demonstrating the possibilities of increasing the returns from permanent pastures by introducing clover into old grass sods and from applying lime and phosphate fertilizer in addition to reseeding
