Electronic structure of the strongly hybridized ferromagnet CeFe2
We report on results from high-energy spectroscopic measurements on CeFe2, a
system of particular interest due to its anomalous ferromagnetism with an
unusually low Curie temperature and small magnetization compared to the other
rare earth-iron Laves phase compounds. Our experimental results indicate very
strong hybridization of the Ce 4f states with the delocalized band states,
mainly the Fe 3d states. In the interpretation and analysis of our measured
spectra, we have made use of two different theoretical approaches: The first
one is based on the Anderson impurity model, with surface contributions
explicitly taken into account. The second method consists of band-structure
calculations for bulk CeFe2. The analysis based on the Anderson impurity model
gives calculated spectra in good agreement with the whole range of measured
spectra, and reveals that the Ce 4f -- Fe 3d hybridization is considerably
reduced at the surface, resulting in even stronger hybridization in the bulk
than previously thought. The band-structure calculations are ab initio
full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital calculations within the
local-spin-density approximation of the density functional. The Ce 4f electrons
were treated as itinerant band electrons. Interestingly, the Ce 4f partial
density of states obtained from the band-structure calculations also agree well
with the experimental spectra concerning both the 4f peak position and the 4f
bandwidth, if the surface effects are properly taken into account. In addition,
results, notably the partial spin magnetic moments, from the band-structure
calculations are discussed in some detail and compared to experimental findings
and earlier calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B in December 200
Magnetic structures and interactions in RZn12 and RCu4Al8 compounds
The magnetic properties and structures of RCu4Al8, and RZn12 compounds are deduced from magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction experiments. To explain the observed structures in the Heisenberg exchange model, long range interactions (> 10 Å) must be considered
The paramagnetic response of nickel at high temperature
The paramagnetic response of nickel has been measured using polarized neutron scattering with polarization analysis from 1.25 to 2 Tc and for energy transfers up to 180 meV (∼3 Tc). In the restricted temperature and momentum range covered by Steinsvoll et al., the present results were found to be in satisfactory agreement. However, CPA calculations are unable to account for wavevector and frequency dependence, as well as absolute magnitude of the observed scattering.
FLUCTUATIONS OF THE SPIN DENSITY IN METALLIC MAGNETS
The magnetism of transition metals in which the magnetic moment is carried by itinerant electrons is still a controversial topic. There is lack of agreement as to what kind of fluctuations are responsible for the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition, and even on the nature of the paramagnetic phase itself. Paramagnetic neutron scattering provides a powerful tool for probing magnetic fluctuations in the paramagnetic state and is sensitive to wave-vector dependent features which distinguish different current theories. We have exploited this sensitivity in studying the spin-spin correlation functions in metallic magnets using polarisation analysis to obtain a clean measurement of the paramagnetic cross-section
Magnetic properties of R6Mn23 compounds
Magnetic measurements on single crystals of Gd6Mn23, Er6Mn23, Dy6Mn23, and Y6Mn23 reveal a non-colinear structure of the rare earth moments at low temperature
The magnetic response of paramagnetic Fe at high energy transfers
Previous measurements in paramagnetic iron using polarized neutrons with polarization analysis revealed strong forward magnetic scattering. By contrast, the scattering at large wavevectors, was observed to be very weak. We report on additional measurements near the zone boundary, which extend to energy transfers of about 2 Tc (∼ 200 meV). A value of 1.7 μ 2B is obtained, and the resulting integrated Fe moment is 1.55 μB. These results confirm that, in 3d metals, correlations which are inherent to the itinerant nature of the 3d electrons occur.
