Spin-injection Hall effect in a planar photovoltaic cell
Successful incorporation of the spin degree of freedom in semiconductor
technology requires the development of a new paradigm allowing for a scalable,
non-destructive electrical detection of the spin-polarization of injected
charge carriers as they propagate along the semiconducting channel. In this
paper we report the observation of a spin-injection Hall effect (SIHE) which
exploits the quantum-relativistic nature of spin-charge transport and which
meets all these key requirements on the spin detection. The two-dimensional
electron-hole gas photo-voltaic cell we designed to observe the SIHE allows us
to develop a quantitative microscopic theory of the phenomenon and to
demonstrate its direct application in optoelectronics. We report an
experimental realization of a non-magnetic spin-photovoltaic effect via the
SIHE, rendering our device an electrical polarimeter which directly converts
the degree of circular polarization of light to a voltage signal.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
An integrated approach to global synchronization and state estimation for nonlinear singularly perturbed complex networks
This paper aims to establish a unified framework to handle both the exponential synchronization and state estimation problems for a class of nonlinear singularly perturbed complex networks (SPCNs). Each node in the SPCN comprises both 'slow' and 'fast' dynamics that reflects the singular perturbation behavior. General sector-like nonlinear function is employed to describe the nonlinearities existing in the network. All nodes in the SPCN have the same structures and properties. By utilizing a novel Lyapunov functional and the Kronecker product, it is shown that the addressed SPCN is synchronized if certain matrix inequalities are feasible. The state estimation problem is then studied for the same complex network, where the purpose is to design a state estimator to estimate the network states through available output measurements such that dynamics (both slow and fast) of the estimation error is guaranteed to be globally asymptotically stable. Again, a matrix inequality approach is developed for the state estimation problem. Two numerical examples are presented to verify the effectiveness and merits of the proposed synchronization scheme and state estimation formulation. It is worth mentioning that our main results are still valid even if the slow subsystems within the network are unstable
Cyclic cosmology from Lagrange-multiplier modified gravity
We investigate cyclic and singularity-free evolutions in a universe governed
by Lagrange-multiplier modified gravity, either in scalar-field cosmology, as
well as in one. In the scalar case, cyclicity can be induced by a
suitably reconstructed simple potential, and the matter content of the universe
can be successfully incorporated. In the case of -gravity, cyclicity can
be induced by a suitable reconstructed second function of a very
simple form, however the matter evolution cannot be analytically handled.
Furthermore, we study the evolution of cosmological perturbations for the two
scenarios. For the scalar case the system possesses no wavelike modes due to a
dust-like sound speed, while for the case there exist an oscillation
mode of perturbations which indicates a dynamical degree of freedom. Both
scenarios allow for stable parameter spaces of cosmological perturbations
through the bouncing point.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, references added, accepted for publicatio
Numerical Investigation on Flow Separation Control of Low Reynolds Number Sinusoidal Aerofoils
The paper presents a computational analysis of the characteristics of a NACA 634-
021 aerofoil incorporated with sinusoidal leading-edge protuberances at Re = 14,000.
The protuberances are characterized by an amplitude and wavelength of 12% and 50%
of the aerofoil chord length respectively. An unsteady Reynolds Average Navier Stokes
(RANS) analysis of the full-span aerofoils was carried out using Transition SST (Shear
Stress Transport) turbulence model across five different angles-of-attack (AOA).
Comparisons with previous experimental results reported good qualitative agreements
in terms of flow separation when the aerofoils are pitched at higher AOAs. Results
presented here comprised of near-wall flow visualizations of the flow separation bubble
at the peaks and troughs of the protuberances. Additionally, results indicate that the
aerofoil with leading-edge protuberances displayed distinctive wall shear streamline and
iso-contour characteristics at different span-wise positions. This implies that even at a
low Reynolds number, implementations of these leading-edge protuberances could have
positive or adverse effects on flow separation
Parameterized Algorithms for Graph Partitioning Problems
We study a broad class of graph partitioning problems, where each problem is
specified by a graph , and parameters and . We seek a subset
of size , such that is at most
(or at least) , where are constants
defining the problem, and are the cardinalities of the edge sets
having both endpoints, and exactly one endpoint, in , respectively. This
class of fixed cardinality graph partitioning problems (FGPP) encompasses Max
-Cut, Min -Vertex Cover, -Densest Subgraph, and -Sparsest
Subgraph.
Our main result is an algorithm for any problem in
this class, where is the maximum degree in the input graph.
This resolves an open question posed by Bonnet et al. [IPEC 2013]. We obtain
faster algorithms for certain subclasses of FGPPs, parameterized by , or by
. In particular, we give an time algorithm for Max
-Cut, thus improving significantly the best known time
algorithm
Testing the Lorentz and CPT Symmetry with CMB polarizations and a non-relativistic Maxwell Theory
We present a model for a system involving a photon gauge field and a scalar
field at quantum criticality in the frame of a Lifthitz-type non-relativistic
Maxwell theory. We will show this model gives rise to Lorentz and CPT violation
which leads to a frequency-dependent rotation of polarization plane of
radiations, and so leaves potential signals on the cosmic microwave background
temperature and polarization anisotropies.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted on JCAP, a few references adde
