Preparation contextuality powers parity-oblivious multiplexing
In a noncontextual hidden variable model of quantum theory, hidden variables
determine the outcomes of every measurement in a manner that is independent of
how the measurement is implemented. Using a generalization of this notion to
arbitrary operational theories and to preparation procedures, we demonstrate
that a particular two-party information-processing task, "parity-oblivious
multiplexing," is powered by contextuality in the sense that there is a limit
to how well any theory described by a noncontextual hidden variable model can
perform. This bound constitutes a "noncontextuality inequality" that is
violated by quantum theory. We report an experimental violation of this
inequality in good agreement with the quantum predictions. The experimental
results also provide the first demonstration of 2-to-1 and 3-to-1 quantum
random access codes. Consequently, our experimental results also demonstrate
better-than-classical performance for this task. They also represent the first
demonstration of 2-to-1 and 3-to-1 quantum random access codes.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; published version with supplementary material

Scheduling with Sequencing Flexibility *
This study examines the effects of sequencing flexibility on the performance of rules used to schedule operations in manufacturing systems. The findings show that taking advantage of even low levels of sequencing flexibility in the set of operations required to do a job results in substantial improvement in the performance of scheduling rules with respect to mean flowtime. Differences in the mean flowtime measure for various rules also diminish significantly with increasing sequencing flexibility. Performance improvements additionally result for such due-date related performance measures as mean tardiness and the proportion of jobs tardy. At high levels of sequencing flexibility, some nonparametric scheduling rules outperform the shortest processing time rule in terms of the mean flowtime criterion. Rules based on job due dates also outperform rules based on operation milestones in terms of tardiness related criteria at high levels of sequencing flexibility. The implications of these findings for the design of manufacturing systems and product design are noted.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73893/1/j.1540-5915.1993.tb00477.x.pd
Manufacturing flow line systems: a review of models and analytical results
The most important models and results of the manufacturing flow line literature are described. These include the major classes of models (asynchronous, synchronous, and continuous); the major features (blocking, processing times, failures and repairs); the major properties (conservation of flow, flow rate-idle time, reversibility, and others); and the relationships among different models. Exact and approximate methods for obtaining quantitative measures of performance are also reviewed. The exact methods are appropriate for small systems. The approximate methods, which are the only means available for large systems, are generally based on decomposition, and make use of the exact methods for small systems. Extensions are briefly discussed. Directions for future research are suggested.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant DDM-8914277
An analytical framework for evaluating the value of enhanced customisation: an integrated operations-marketing perspective
In this paper we present a formal approach to evaluate the value of enhanced customisation. The suggested approach is based on a new perspective addressing the important alignment between the operations and marketing functions, under which we are able to obtain a more holistic understanding of the extent to which enhanced customisation may influence profitability. The model we develop captures the interaction between several factors including the inventory level, number of product variety, price, and delivery lead time. The numerical findings provide insights regarding some important aspects that may inhibit as well as facilitate the progress towards the manufacturing concept with a greater degree of personalised offerings
