Single-photon detection timing jitter in a visible light photon counter
Visible light photon counters (VLPCs) offer many attractive features as
photon detectors, such as high quantum efficiency and photon number resolution.
We report measurements of the single-photon timing jitter in a VLPC, a critical
performance factor in a time-correlated single-photon counting measurement, in
a fiber-coupled closed-cycle cryocooler. The measured timing jitter is 240 ps
full-width-at-half-maximum at a wavelength of 550 nm, with a dark count rate of
25 000 counts per second. The timing jitter increases modestly at longer
wavelengths to 300 ps at 1000 nm, and increases substantially at lower bias
voltages as the quantum efficiency is reduced
New coherent detector for terahertz radiation based on excitonic electroabsorption
We demonstrate a new technique for the coherent measurement of free‐space THz electrical transients, based on the parallel‐field excitonic electroabsorption effect in GaAs quantum wells. A THz transient generated from a photoconductive dipole antenna is measured with a rise time of 290 fs and a full width at half maximum of 360 fs. The initial rise of the THz wave form is abrupt, and does not display the exponential leading edge apparent in waveforms measured with photoconductive techniques. De stichting van Friedrichstadt in 1621. Sociale segregatie in een geplande nederzetting
This article focuses on the spatial structure, the street plan and the housing blocks of Friedrichstadt in Sleeswijk-Holstein. This 'ideal new town' was founded in 1621 in the place where the rivers Treene and Eider flow together, by Remonstrants who had fled the Dutch Republic after the Synod of Dordrecht.
Besides the town plan, as it is still to be traced back in the actual layout of the settlement, the underlying deed of foundation of Friedrichstadt has also been preserved. Freedom of religion for the future population played an important part in it. But much thought was also given to the spatial and administrative organisation of the new town, which was eventually executed according to plan.
From analysis of the deed of foundation it appears that attention was paid to the defense of the town, but also to the characteristics of the future population. The question where and how they would have to live proves to have played a decisive role in the layout that Friedrichstadt would eventually get.
By comparing the deed with the town plan it is evident that the extent of the various social groups and the place they were to be assigned within the establishment were approached thoughtfully. Spatial segregation played an important part in the views on this early 17th-century town establishment.
In the end it all worked out differently. Friedrichstadt never developed into the superregional commercial settlement it was expected to become. Because an increase in population failed to take place, the fortress that the sovereign had promised to build was not realised either

Transcriptome analysis reveals the contribution of oligodendrocyte and radial glia-derived cues for maintenance of microglia identity
Microglia are increasingly being recognized as druggable targets in neurodegenerative disorders, and good in vitro models are crucial to address cell biological questions. Major challenges are to recapitulate the complex microglial morphology and their in vivo transcriptome. We have therefore exposed primary microglia from adult rhesus macaques to a variety of different culture conditions including exposure to soluble factors as M-CSF, IL-34, and TGF-β as well as serum replacement approaches, and compared their morphologies and transcriptomes to those of mature, homeostatic in vivo microglia. This enabled us to develop a new, partially serum-free, monoculture protocol, that yields high numbers of ramified cells. We also demonstrate that exposure of adult microglia to M-CSF or IL-34 induces similar transcriptomes, and that exposure to TGF-β has much less pronounced effects than it does on rodent microglia. However, regardless of culture conditions, the transcriptomes of in vitro and in vivo microglia remained substantially different. Analysis of differentially expressed genes inspired us to perform 3D-spherical coculture experiments of microglia with oligodendrocytes and radial glia. In such spheres, microglia signature genes were strongly induced, even in the absence of neurons and astrocytes. These data reveal a novel role for oligodendrocyte and radial glia-derived cues in the maintenance of microglial identity, providing new anchor points to study microglia in health and disease
Thin accretion disc with a corona in a central magnetic field
We study the steady-state structure of an accretion disc with a corona
surrounding a central, rotating, magnetized star. We assume that the
magneto-rotational instability is the dominant mechanism of angular momentum
transport inside the disc and is responsible for producing magnetic tubes above
the disc. In our model, a fraction of the dissipated energy inside the disc is
transported to the corona via these magnetic tubes. This energy exchange from
the disc to the corona which depends on the disc physical properties is
modified because of the magnetic interaction between the stellar magnetic field
and the accretion disc. According to our fully analytical solutions for such a
system, the existence of a corona not only increases the surface density but
reduces the temperature of the accretion disc. Also, the presence of a corona
enhances the ratio of gas pressure to the total pressure. Our solutions show
that when the strength of the magnetic field of the central neutron star is
large or the star is rotating fast enough, profiles of the physical variables
of the disc significantly modify due to the existence of a corona.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
Generation of degenerate, factorizable, pulsed squeezed light at telecom wavelengths
We characterize a periodically poled KTP crystal that produces an entangled,
two-mode, squeezed state with orthogonal polarizations, nearly identical,
factorizable frequency modes, and few photons in unwanted frequency modes. We
focus the pump beam to create a nearly circular joint spectral probability
distribution between the two modes. After disentangling the two modes, we
observe Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a raw (background corrected)
visibility of 86 % (95 %) when an 8.6 nm bandwidth spectral filter is applied.
We measure second order photon correlations of the entangled and disentangled
squeezed states with both superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and
photon-number-resolving transition-edge sensors. Both methods agree and verify
that the detected modes contain the desired photon number distributions
