The orbifold-string theories of permutation-type: II. Cycle dynamics and target space-time dimensions

We continue our discussion of the general bosonic prototype of the new orbifold-string theories of permutation type. Supplementing the extended physical-state conditions of the previous paper, we construct here the extended Virasoro generators with cycle central charge c^j(σ)=26fj(σ)\hat{c}_j(\sigma)=26f_j(\sigma), where fj(σ)f_j(\sigma) is the length of cycle jj in twisted sector σ\sigma. We also find an equivalent, reduced formulation of each physical-state problem at reduced cycle central charge cj(σ)=26c_j(\sigma)=26. These tools are used to begin the study of the target space-time dimension D^j(σ)\hat{D}_j(\sigma) of cycle jj in sector σ\sigma, which is naturally defined as the number of zero modes (momenta) of each cycle. The general model-dependent formulae derived here will be used extensively in succeeding papers, but are evaluated in this paper only for the simplest case of the "pure" permutation orbifolds.Comment: 32 page

Lagrangians with electric and magnetic charges of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories

General Lagrangians are constructed for N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four space-time dimensions involving gauge groups with (non-abelian) electric and magnetic charges. The charges induce a scalar potential, which, when the charges are regarded as spurionic quantities, is invariant under electric/magnetic duality. The resulting theories are especially relevant for supergravity, but details of the extension to local supersymmetry will be discussed elsewhere. The results include the coupling to hypermultiplets. Without the latter, it is demonstrated how an off-shell representation can be constructed based on vector and tensor supermultiplets.Comment: 34 pages, LaTe

The Orbifold-String Theories of Permutation-Type: III. Lorentzian and Euclidean Space-Times in a Large Example

To illustrate the general results of the previous paper, we discuss here a large concrete example of the orbifold-string theories of permutation-type. For each of the many subexamples, we focus on evaluation of the \emph{target space-time dimension} D^j(σ)\hat{D}_j(\sigma), the \emph{target space-time signature} and the \emph{target space-time symmetry} of each cycle jj in each twisted sector σ\sigma. We find in particular a gratifying \emph{space-time symmetry enhancement} which naturally matches the space-time symmetry of each cycle to its space-time dimension. Although the orbifolds of Z2\Z_{2}-permutation-type are naturally Lorentzian, we find that the target space-times associated to larger permutation groups can be Lorentzian, Euclidean and even null (\hat{D}_{j}(\sigma)=0), with varying space-time dimensions, signature and symmetry in a single orbifold.Comment: 36 page

Nonextensivity in the solar magnetic activity during the increasing phase of solar Cycle 23

In this paper we analyze the behavior of the daily Sunspot Number from the Sunspot Index Data Center (SIDC), the mean Magnetic Field strength from the National Solar Observatory/Kitt Peak (NSO/KP) and Total Solar Irradiance means from Virgo/SoHO, in the context of the qq--Triplet which emerges within nonextensive statistical mechanics. Distributions for the mean solar Magnetic Field show two different behaviors, with a qq--Gaussian for scales of 1 to 16 days and a Gaussian for scales longer than 32 days. The latter corresponds to an equilibrium state. Distributions for Total Solar Irradiance also show two different behaviors (approximately Gaussian) for scales of 128 days and longer, consistent with statistical equilibrium and qq--Gaussian for scales << 128 days. Distributions for the Sunspot Number show a qq--Gaussian independent of timescales, consistent with a nonequilibrium state. The values obtained ("qq--Triplet"≡\equiv{\{qqstat_{stat},qqsen_{sen},qqrel_{rel}}\}) demonstrate that the Gaussian or qq--Gaussian behavior of the aforementioned data depends significantly on timescales. These results point to strong multifractal behavior of the dataset analyzed, with the multifractal level decreasing from Sunspot Number to Total Solar Irradiance. In addition, we found a numerically satisfied dual relation between qstatq_{stat} and qsenq_{sen}.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Pion Form Factor in the Light-Front

The pion electromagnetic form factor is calculated with a light-front quark model. The "plus" and "minus" component of the electromagnetic current are used to calculate the electromagnetic form factor in the Breit frame with two models for the q\bar{q} vertex. The light front constituent quark models describes very well hadronic wave function for pseudo-scalar and vector particles. Symmetry problems arinsing in the light-front approach are solved by the pole dislocation method. The results are compared with new experimental data and with other quark models.Comment: 4 pages,1 figure (eps), Latex,AIP style. To appear in the proceedings "IX Hadron Physics and VII Relativistic Aspects of Nuclear Physics: A Joint Meeting on QCD and QGP, Hadron Physics-RANP,2004,Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro,Brazil.(some references are added and small mistakes are corrected.

    Domain walls in supersymmetric QCD

We consider domain walls that appear in supersymmetric SU(N) with one massive flavour. In particular, for N > 3 we explicitly construct the elementary domain wall that interpolates between two contiguous vacua. We show that these solutions are BPS saturated for any value of the mass of the matter fields. We also comment on their large N limit and their relevance for supersymmetric gluodynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, uses latex with hep99 class files. Unified Einstein-Virasoro Master Equation in the General Non-Linear Sigma Model

The Virasoro master equation (VME) describes the general affine-Virasoro construction T=L^{ab}J_aJ_b+iD^a \dif J_a in the operator algebra of the WZW model, where LabL^{ab} is the inverse inertia tensor and DaD^a is the improvement vector. In this paper, we generalize this construction to find the general (one-loop) Virasoro construction in the operator algebra of the general non-linear sigma model. The result is a unified Einstein-Virasoro master equation which couples the spacetime spin-two field LabL^{ab} to the background fields of the sigma model. For a particular solution LGabL_G^{ab}, the unified system reduces to the canonical stress tensors and conventional Einstein equations of the sigma model, and the system reduces to the general affine-Virasoro construction and the VME when the sigma model is taken to be the WZW action. More generally, the unified system describes a space of conformal field theories which is presumably much larger than the sum of the general affine-Virasoro construction and the sigma model with its canonical stress tensors. We also discuss a number of algebraic and geometrical properties of the system, including its relation to an unsolved problem in the theory of GG-structures on manifolds with torsion.Comment: LaTeX, 55 pages, one postscript figure, uses epsfig.sty. contains a few minor corrections; version to be published in Int. The Fine-Tuning Problem of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism in Minimal SUSY Models

We calculate the region of the MSSM parameter space (i.e. M1/2M_{1/2}, m0m_{0}, μ\mu, \ldots) compatible with a correct electroweak breaking and a realistic top-quark mass. To do so we have included {\em all} the one-loop corrections to the effective potential V1V_{1} and checked their importance in order to obtain consistent results. We also consider the fine-tuning problem due to the enormous dependence of MZM_{Z} on hth_{t} (the top Yukawa coupling), which is substantially reduced when the one-loop effects are taken into account. We also explore the reliability of the so-called "standard" criterion to estimate the degree of fine-tuning. As a consequence, we obtain a new set of upper bounds on the MSSM parameters or, equivalently, on the supersymmetric masses perfectly consistent with the present experimental bounds.Comment: talk given at the XVI Kazimierz Meeting on Elementary Particle Physics, Kazimierz (Poland) 24-28 May 1993, 4 pages in standard LATEX + 2 figures (not included but available upon request), CERN-TH.7024/9

Unification of the General Non-Linear Sigma Model and the Virasoro Master Equation

    Get PDF
The Virasoro master equation describes a large set of conformal field theories known as the affine-Virasoro constructions, in the operator algebra (affine Lie algebra) of the WZW model, while the Einstein equations of the general non-linear sigma model describe another large set of conformal field theories. This talk summarizes recent work which unifies these two sets of conformal field theories, together with a presumable large class of new conformal field theories. The basic idea is to consider spin-two operators of the form Lij∂xi∂xjL_{ij} \partial x^i \partial x^j in the background of a general sigma model. The requirement that these operators satisfy the Virasoro algebra leads to a set of equations called the unified Einstein-Virasoro master equation, in which the spin-two spacetime field LijL_{ij} couples to the usual spacetime fields of the sigma model. The one-loop form of this unified system is presented, and some of its algebraic and geometric properties are discussed.Comment: 18 pages, Latex.
