Interdisciplinary Projects-Based Community Entrepreneurship Courses
Over the last approximately fifteen years, the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) School of Law has developed a multifaceted set of courses, including interdisciplinary courses, pro bono clinics, and other programs and events relating to for-profit entrepreneurship and economic development, and social and civic entrepreneurship. This presentation will describe two recent interdisciplinary additions to these offerings-- the Law, Technology and Public Policy (LT&PP) course and the Entrepreneurial Urban Development (EUD) course. Both have strong elements of increased access to law and justice, with particular focus on presently disadvantaged and underrepresented individuals, groups, and communities. They significantly enhance the training of individuals to become effective community economic development and social justice advocates and facilitators. They deliver productive projects-based learning through multidisciplinary teamwork among faculty, students, and government officials and/or community activists, grounded in design thinking, and embracing the emphasis on empathy and constructing solutions responsive to the needs of various stakeholders that design thinking entails
A CSO Search for -CH: Detection in the Orion Bar PDR
The results of a Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) search for
-CH, first detected by Pety et al. (2012) in observations toward the
Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR), are presented. A total of 39 sources
were observed in the 1 mm window. Evidence of emission from -CH is
found in only a single source - the Orion Bar PDR region, which shows a
rotational temperature of 178(13) K and a column density of 7(2) x
cm. In the remaining sources, upper limits of ~10
cm are found. These results are discussed in the context of guiding

Discovery of the Interstellar Chiral Molecule Propylene Oxide (CHCHCHO)
Life on Earth relies on chiral molecules, that is, species not superimposable
on their mirror images. This manifests itself in the selection of a single
molecular handedness, or homochirality, across the biosphere. We present the
astronomical detection of a chiral molecule, propylene oxide (CHCHCHO),
in absorption toward the Galactic Center. Propylene oxide is detected in the
gas phase in a cold, extended molecular shell around the embedded, massive
protostellar clusters in the Sagittarius B2 star-forming region. This material
is representative of the earliest stage of solar system evolution in which a
chiral molecule has been found
Platelet-mediated thrombosis in stenosed canine coronary arteries: Inhibition by nicergoline, a platelet-active alpha-adrenergic antagonist
The effects of nicergoline, a new agent that blocks alpha-adrenergic receptors and inhibits platelet phospholipase, were evaluated in a canine model of platelet-mediated coronary thrombosis. In 48 open chest dogs, the circumflex coronary artery was stenosed by plicating the artery wall with a suture. Thirty-four of the 48 dogs exhibited cyclic reductions in flow in the stenotic vessel, followed by a sudden return to control levels. The reductions in flow were unabated in all but two dogs after heparin administration (1,000 U/kg per h), unaffected by large doses of nitroglycerin and nifedipine and associated with platelet aggregates in the stenotic segment (demonstrated by histologic and electron microscopic examination). These observations support the conclusion that the flow reductions were caused by platelet aggregation rather than by fibrin deposition or vasospasm.Twenty dogs were monitored for 1 hour after heparin administration and then assigned to a control (n = 7) or nicergoline-treated (n = 13; 1 mg/kg intravenously) group. In control dogs, cyclic reductions in flow continued unchanged for another hour, whereas in the treated group they were markedly decreased in 1 dog and completely abolished in the other 12 dogs. Aspirin (30 mg/ kg intravenously) suppressed flow reductions in all control dogs, confirming the primary role of platelet aggregation in the phenomenon.This study provides a modified model of platelet-mediated thrombosis in stenosed coronary arteries. Furthermore, the results indicate that nicergoline can effectively interfere with platelet function in vivo. The potent antithrombotic activity exhibited by nicergoline might enhance the therapeutic usefulness of this vasodilator
CSO and CARMA Observations of L1157. I. A Deep Search for Hydroxylamine (NHOH)
A deep search for the potential glycine precursor hydroxylamine (NHOH)
using the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) at mm and the
Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) at mm is presented toward the molecular outflow L1157, targeting the B1 and B2
shocked regions. We report non-detections of NHOH in both sources. We a
perform non-LTE analysis of CHOH observed in our CSO spectra to derive
kinetic temperatures and densities in the shocked regions. Using these
parameters, we derive upper limit column densities of NHOH of ~cm and ~cm toward the B1
and B2 shocks, respectively, and upper limit relative abundances of
and ,

New Martian Meteorite Is One of the Most Oxidized Found to Date
As of 2013, about 60 meteorites from the planet Mars have been found and are being studied. Each time a new Martian meteorite is found, a wealth of new information comes forward about the red planet. The most abundant type of Martian meteorite is a shergottite; its lithologies are broadly similar to those of Earth basalts and gabbros; i.e., crustal igneous rocks. The entire suite of shergottites is characterized by a range of trace element, isotopic ratio, and oxygen fugacity values that mainly reflect compositional variations of the Martian mantle from which these magmas came. A newly found shergottite, NWA 5298, was the focus of a study performed by scientists within the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Directorate at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in 2012. This sample was found in Morocco in 2008. Major element analyses were performed in the electron microprobe (EMP) laboratory of ARES at JSC, while the trace elements were measured at the University of Houston by laser inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). A detailed analysis of this stone revealed that this meteorite is a crystallized magma that comes from the enriched end of the shergottite spectrum; i.e., trace element enriched and oxidized. Its oxidation comes in part from its mantle source and from oxidation during the magma ascent. It represents a pristine magma that did not mix with any other magma or see crystal accumulation or crustal contamination on its way up to the Martian surface. NWA 5298 is therefore a direct, albeit evolved, melt from the Martian mantle and, for its lithology (basaltic shergottite), it represents the oxidized end of the shergottite suite. It is thus a unique sample that has provided an end-member composition for Martian magmas
