Refractive index of a transparent liquid measured with a concave mirror
This paper describes the spherical concave mirror method for measuring the
index of refraction of transparent liquids. We derived the refractive index
equation using Snell's law and the small-angle approximation. We also verified
the validity of this method using the traditional spherical mirror and

Visualizing the logistic map with a microcontroller
The logistic map is one of the simplest nonlinear dynamical systems that
clearly exhibit the route to chaos. In this paper, we explored the evolution of
the logistic map using an open-source microcontroller connected to an array of
light emitting diodes (LEDs). We divided the one-dimensional interval
into ten equal parts, and associated and LED to each segment. Every time an
iteration took place a corresponding LED turned on indicating the value
returned by the logistic map. By changing some initial conditions of the

THE EFFECT OF FATIGUE ON LOWER LIMB MOTOR VARIABILITY DURING A CONTROLLED REPETITIVE STRETCH-SHORTEN CYCLE TASK
This study evaluated changes in lower limb joint coupling variability during single-leg hopping to exhaustion. Twenty recreationally active male and female participants performed single-leg hopping at 2.2 Hz to a target height. At 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of the total duration of hopping, spatio-temporal characteristics and variability of the kneeankle (KA) and hip-knee (HK) joint couplings were determined. There was a significant increase in variability of the KA and HK joint couplings in the flexion-extension axes during the loading and propulsion phases as hopping progressed. However, there was maintenance of performance output characteristics throughout the task. These findings suggest that changes in joint coupling variability may be a compensatory strategy to allow continuous single-leg hopping as the effects of muscular fatigue increase
DOES THE METHOD OF MEASURING CENTRE OF MASS DISPLACEMENT AFFECT VERTICAL STIFFNESS CALCULATION IN SINGLE-LEG HOPPING?
The purpose of this study was to compare vertical stiffness values calculated from two kinetic and two kinematic estimations of the vertical displacement of the centre of mass. Twenty recreationally active male and female participants completed one 15 s single-leg hopping trial at 2.2 Hz with vertical stiffness calculated for the first 10 complete hop cycles. Vertical displacement was estimated using double integration (DI), first principle (FP), sacral marker cluster (SMC) and segmental analysis (SA) methods. Bland-Altman plots demonstrated the SA and DI methods to have a small bias (0.92 kN/m) and tight 95% limits of agreement (-1.16 to 3.08 kN/m). In contrast, the SMC and FP methods underestimated and overestimated vertical stiffness, respectively. These findings suggest the SA and DI methods can be used interchangeably to calculate vertical stiffness
A RANDOMISED CONTROLLED TRIAL EVALUATING THE EFFECTS OF COMPRESSION GARMENTS DURING SINGLE-LEG HOPPING TO EXHAUSTION
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of compression garments on spatiotemporal and leg mechanical characteristics during single-leg-hopping (2.2 Hz) to volitional exhaustion. This study demonstrated that compression garments had no significant effect on leg mechanical characteristics or performance parameters of single-leg hopping to volitional exhaustion. There was a significant increase in the duration of the loading phase and decrease in the flight phase from the start to the end during single-leg hopping task indicating that there may have been a shift in the motor control strategy used to preserve vertical leg stiffness and hopping frequency in a repeated and rapid loading task
SEX DIFFERENCES IN LOWER LIMB MOVEMENT VARIABILITY DURING A FATIGUING REPETITIVE LOADING TASK
This study evaluated differences in lower limb joint coupling variability between recreationally-active male (n = 21) and female participants (n = 20) during single-leg hopping to exhaustion. Spatio-temporal characteristics and variability of the knee-ankle and hip-knee joint couplings were determined over the duration of hopping. As fatigue progressed joint coupling variability increased by a greater magnitude in females compared to males. Females had significantly lower variability compared to males in the knee-ankle couplings during the propulsion phase at the beginning of the trial but this effect progressively disappeared during the trial. These findings suggest that as fatigue progresses, there is a regression to a similar magnitude of joint coupling variability which may represent a common level of synchronous joint interaction between sexes
Deterministic Sampling and Range Counting in Geometric Data Streams
We present memory-efficient deterministic algorithms for constructing
epsilon-nets and epsilon-approximations of streams of geometric data. Unlike
probabilistic approaches, these deterministic samples provide guaranteed bounds
on their approximation factors. We show how our deterministic samples can be
used to answer approximate online iceberg geometric queries on data streams. We
use these techniques to approximate several robust statistics of geometric data
streams, including Tukey depth, simplicial depth, regression depth, the
Thiel-Sen estimator, and the least median of squares. Our algorithms use only a
polylogarithmic amount of memory, provided the desired approximation factors
are inverse-polylogarithmic. We also include a lower bound for non-iceberg

Atomic Structure and Magnetism of Ordered and Disordered Alâ‚€.â‚…Feâ‚€.â‚…â‚‹â‚“Mnâ‚“ Alloys
The equiatomic FeAl alloy has been modified by partial substitution of Mn for Fe, and its magnetic and structural properties investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), and SQUID magnetometry both for the ordered (B2) and disordered states. The unit cell volume is measured to increase linearly with Mn concentration. XAFS measurements indicate local structural displacements occur at the Mn sites in both ordered and disordered states that may act to frustrate long-range magnetic order (LRMO). Although MS and ND show no evidence of LRMO, SQUID magnetometry indicates an induced movement in the ordered state that increases with disorder but does not saturate at fields up to 5 T
Role of adiponectin as a modulator of testicular function during aging in mice
The mechanisms by which testicular functions decline with aging remain largely speculative. Our recent finding
showed the importance of adiponectin in the regulation of testicular functions, whereas its concentration declines during male infertility. Thus, the aim of present study was to explore the potential role of adiponectin
during aging. The changes in adiponectin, adiponectin-receptors, and insulin receptor proteins expression in the
testis were evaluated and compared with the testicular parameters, mass, and testosterone level in the mice from
early post-natal to late senescence period. Further, the current study has examined the effect of exogenous
adiponectin treatment on testicular functions in aged mice. The results showed a significant decline in adiponectin/adiponectin-receptors expression simultaneously with a significant decline in testicular mass, insulin
receptor expression and testosterone synthesis in the testis of aged mice. Exogenous treatment of adiponectin to
aged mice resulted in marked improvements in testicular mass, histological features (cells proliferation), insulin
receptor expression, testicular glucose uptake, anti-oxidative enzymes activity and testosterone synthesis as
compared with the control. Based on these findings, it may be concluded that a marked decline in adiponectin
synthesis and action results in decreased insulin sensitivity (development of insulin resistance) and increased
oxidative stress which consequently suppresses testicular functions during aging. This study further showed that
treatment with adiponectin ameliorates reduced testicular functions by enhanced expression of insulin receptor
in the testis of senescent mice. It is thus hypothesized that systemic adiponectin treatment could be a promising
therapeutic strategy for improvement of testosterone production and sperm counts during aging.Mayank Choubey greatly acknowledges financial assistance in the
