Aerosol optical properties during INDOEX based on measured aerosol particle size and composition
The light scattering and light absorption as a function of wavelength and relative humidity due to aerosols measured at the Kaashidhoo Climate Observatory in the Republic of the Maldives during the INDOEX field campaign has been calculated. Using size-segregated measurements of aerosol chemical composition, calculated light scattering and absorption has been evaluated against measurements of light scattering and absorption. Light scattering coefficients are predicted to within a few percent over relative humidities of 20β90%. Single scattering albedos calculated from the measured elemental carbon size distributions and concentrations in conjunction with other aerosol species have a relative error of 4.0% when compared to measured values. The single scattering albedo for the aerosols measured during INDOEX is both predicted and observed to be about 0.86 at an ambient relative humidity of 80%. These results demonstrate that the light scattering, light absorption, and hence climate forcing due to aerosols over the Indian Ocean are consistent with the chemical and physical properties of the aerosol at that location
Relating tropical ocean clouds to moist processes using water vapor isotope measurements
We examine the co-variations of tropospheric water vapor, its isotopic composition and cloud types and relate these distributions to tropospheric mixing and distillation models using satellite observations from the Aura Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) over the summertime tropical ocean. Interpretation of these process distributions must take into account the sensitivity of the TES isotope and water vapor measurements to variations in cloud, water, and temperature amount. Consequently, comparisons are made between cloud-types based on the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISSCP) classification; these are clear sky, non-precipitating (e.g., cumulus), boundary layer (e.g., stratocumulus), and precipitating clouds (e.g. regions of deep convection). In general, we find that the free tropospheric vapor over tropical oceans does not strictly follow a Rayleigh model in which air parcels become dry and isotopically depleted through condensation. Instead, mixing processes related to convection as well as subsidence, and re-evaporation of rainfall associated with organized deep convection all play significant roles in controlling the water vapor distribution. Intercomparison Methods for Satellite Measurements of Atmospheric Composition: Application to Tropospheric Ozone from TES and OMI
We analyze the theoretical basis of three different methods to validate and intercompare satellite measurements of atmospheric composition, and apply them to tropospheric ozone retrievals from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). The first method (in situ method) uses in situ vertical profiles for absolute instrument validation; it is limited by the sparseness of in situ data. The second method (CTM method) uses a chemical transport model (CTM) as an intercomparison platform; it provides a globally complete intercomparison with relatively small noise from model error. The third method (averaging kernel smoothing method) involves smoothing the retrieved profile from one instrument with the averaging kernel matrix of the other; it also provides a global intercomparison but dampens the actual difference between instruments and adds noise from the a priori. We apply the three methods to a full year (2006) of TES and OMI data. Comparison with in situ data from ozonesondes shows mean positive biases of 5.3 parts per billion volume (ppbv) (10%) for TES and 2.8 ppbv (5%) for OMI at 500 hPa. We show that the CTM method (using the GEOS-Chem CTM) closely approximates results from the in situ method while providing global coverage. It reveals that differences between TES and OMI are generally less than 10 ppbv (18%), except at northern mid-latitudes in summer and over tropical continents. The CTM method further allows for CTM evaluation using both satellite observations. We thus find that GEOS-Chem underestimates tropospheric ozone in the tropics due to possible underestimates of biomass burning, soil, and lightning emissions. It overestimates ozone in the northern subtropics and southern mid-latitudes, likely because of excessive stratospheric influx of ozone.Earth and Planetary SciencesEngineering and Applied Science
The SFXC software correlator for Very Long Baseline Interferometry: Algorithms and Implementation
In this paper a description is given of the SFXC software correlator,
developed and maintained at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). The
software is designed to run on generic Linux-based computing clusters. The
correlation algorithm is explained in detail, as are some of the novel modes
that software correlation has enabled, such as wide-field VLBI imaging through
the use of multiple phase centres and pulsar gating and binning. This is
followed by an overview of the software architecture. Finally, the performance
of the correlator as a function of number of CPU cores, telescopes and spectral

Validation of northern latitude Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer stare ozone profiles with ARC-IONS sondes during ARCTAS: sensitivity, bias and error analysis
We compare Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) versions 3 and 4, V003 and V004, respectively, nadir-stare ozone profiles with ozonesonde profiles from the Arctic Intensive Ozonesonde Network Study (ARCIONS, http://croc.gsfc.nasa.gov/arcions/ during the Arctic Research on the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) field mission. The ozonesonde data are from launches timed to match Aura's overpass, where 11 coincidences spanned 44Β° N to 71Β° N from April to July 2008. Using the TES "stare" observation mode, 32 observations are taken over each coincidental ozonesonde launch. By effectively sampling the same air mass 32 times, comparisons are made between the empirically-calculated random errors to the expected random errors from measurement noise, temperature and interfering species, such as water. This study represents the first validation of high latitude (>70Β°) TES ozone. We find that the calculated errors are consistent with the actual errors with a similar vertical distribution that varies between 5% and 20% for V003 and V004 TES data. In general, TES ozone profiles are positively biased (by less than 15%) from the surface to the upper-troposphere (~1000 to 100 hPa) and negatively biased (by less than 20%) from the upper-troposphere to the lower-stratosphere (100 to 30 hPa) when compared to the ozonesonde data. Lastly, for V003 and V004 TES data between 44Β° N and 71Β° N there is variability in the mean biases (from β14 to +15%), mean theoretical errors (from 6 to 13%), and mean random errors (from 9 to 19%)
Group Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) for persistently depressed outpatients:a retrospective chart review
BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) is an effective individual treatment for persistent depressive disorder (PDD), but evidence on group treatment (Group-CBASP) is limited. Our aim was to review the effect of Group-CBASP on self-report depression severity in outpatients with PDD, overall and by age of depression-onset. METHODS: A retrospective chart review study (November 2011-March 2017) in 54 patients with PDD (29 late-onset, 25 early-onset). Patients were previously treated by pharmacotherapy (92.6%), psychotherapy (98.1%) and/or electroconvulsive therapy (11.1%). Group-CBASP involved 24 weekly sessions during 6 months, followed by individual appointments over 6 months. The Inventory of Depressive Symptoms -self rating(IDS-SR) was used at baseline and after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, computing mean differences and response rates. RESULTS: The mean IDS-SR score decreased significantly from 39.83 at baseline to 33.78 at 6 months: a decrease from severe to moderate depression after 24 weeks of Group-CBASP, with a medium effect size (Cohen's d = .49). At 12 months, the mean IDS-SR score was 32.81, indicating moderate symptom levels remained. At 6 and 12 months, mean IDS-SR scores were similar among late- versus early-onset patients, but at 12 months response rates were higher among late-onset patients. LIMITATIONS: Although results of our study provide valuable input for future prospective studies, limitations were the use of a retrospective design and the small group size. CONCLUSION: Group-CBASP offered to an outpatient population with PDD was associated with clinically relevant decrease in self-reported symptom severity, and with sustained response particularly in patients with late onset of depression. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Group-CBASP seems to be a good alternative for CBASP in individual setting. Patients with late age of depression-onset seem to benefit more from Group-CBASP. This study shows that clinical relevant effects of Group-CBASP, followed by individual contacts, remain at least for 6 months. Research on personalizing treatment strategies is needed to improve patient assignment for Group-CBASP
Cognitive Functioning in Patients with Bipolar Disorder: Association with Depressive Symptoms and Alcohol Use
BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is clearly recognized in bipolar patients, but the degree of impairment varies due to methodological factors as well as heterogeneity in patient populations. The goal of this study was to evaluate cognitive functioning in bipolar patients and to assess its association with depressive symptoms. Post hoc the relationship with lifetime alcohol use disorder was explored. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The study included 110 bipolar patients and 75 healthy controls. Patients with severe depressive symptoms, (hypo)manic symptoms and current severe alcohol use disorder were excluded. Diagnoses were evaluated via the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Cognitive functioning was measured in domains of psychomotor speed, speed of information processing, attentional switching, verbal memory, visual memory, executive functioning and an overall mean score. Severity of depression was assessed by the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-self rating. Patients were euthymic (n = 46) or with current mild (n = 38) or moderate (n = 26) depressive symptoms. Cognitive impairment was found in 26% (z-score 2 or more above reference control group for at least one domain) of patients, most prominent in executive functioning (effect size; ES 0.49) and speed of information processing (ES 0.47). Depressive symptoms were associated with dysfunction in psychomotor speed (adjusted beta 0.43; R(2) 7%), speed of information processing (adjusted beta 0.36; R(2) 20%), attentional switching (adjusted beta 0.24; R(2) 16%) and the mean score (adjusted beta 0.23; R(2) 24%), but not with verbal and visual memory and executive functioning. Depressive symptoms explained 24% of the variance in the mean z-score of all 6 cognitive domains. Comorbid lifetime alcohol use (n = 21) was not associated with cognitive dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Cognitive dysfunction in bipolar disorder is more severe in patients with depressive symptoms, especially regarding speed and attention. Therefore, interpretation of cognitive functioning in patients with depressive symptoms should be cautious. No association was found between cognitive functioning and lifetime comorbid alcohol use disorder
Can Variation in Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA)-Axis Activity Explain the Relationship between Depression and Cognition in Bipolar Patients?
Background: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is thought to be associated with more mood symptoms and worse cognitive functioning. This study examined whether variation in HPA axis activity underlies the association between mood symptoms and cognitive functioning. Methodology/Principal Findings: In 65 bipolar patients cognitive functioning was measured in domains of psychomotor speed, speed of information processing, attentional switching, verbal memory, visual memory, executive functioning and an overall mean score. Severity of depression was assessed by the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-self rating version. Saliva cortisol measurements were performed to calculate HPA axis indicators: cortisol awakening response, diurnal slope, the evening cortisol level and the cortisol suppression on the dexamethasone suppression test. Regression analyses of depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning on each HPA axis indicator were performed. In addition we calculated percentages explanation of the association between depressive symptoms and cognition by HPA axis indicators. Depressive symptoms were associated with dysfunction in psychomotor speed, attentional switching and the mean score, as well as with attenuation in diurnal slope value. No association was found between HPA axis activity and cognitive functioning and HPA axis activity did not explain the associations between depressive symptoms and cognition. Conclusions/Significance: As our study is the first one in this field specific for bipolar patients and changes in HPA-axis activity did not seem to explain the association between severity of depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning in bipolar patients, future studies are needed to evaluate other factors that might explain this relationship
Alpha, Betti and the Megaparsec Universe: on the Topology of the Cosmic Web
We study the topology of the Megaparsec Cosmic Web in terms of the
scale-dependent Betti numbers, which formalize the topological information
content of the cosmic mass distribution. While the Betti numbers do not fully
quantify topology, they extend the information beyond conventional cosmological
studies of topology in terms of genus and Euler characteristic. The richer
information content of Betti numbers goes along the availability of fast
algorithms to compute them.
For continuous density fields, we determine the scale-dependence of Betti
numbers by invoking the cosmologically familiar filtration of sublevel or
superlevel sets defined by density thresholds. For the discrete galaxy
distribution, however, the analysis is based on the alpha shapes of the
particles. These simplicial complexes constitute an ordered sequence of nested
subsets of the Delaunay tessellation, a filtration defined by the scale
parameter, . As they are homotopy equivalent to the sublevel sets of
the distance field, they are an excellent tool for assessing the topological
structure of a discrete point distribution. In order to develop an intuitive
understanding for the behavior of Betti numbers as a function of , and
their relation to the morphological patterns in the Cosmic Web, we first study
them within the context of simple heuristic Voronoi clustering models.
Subsequently, we address the topology of structures emerging in the standard
LCDM scenario and in cosmological scenarios with alternative dark energy
content. The evolution and scale-dependence of the Betti numbers is shown to
reflect the hierarchical evolution of the Cosmic Web and yields a promising
measure of cosmological parameters. We also discuss the expected Betti numbers
as a function of the density threshold for superlevel sets of a Gaussian random

A protocol for light therapy in bipolar disorder
BACKGROUND There is no national protocol for the use of light therapy in bipolar depression. AIM The chronotherapy collaboration group of the Foundation for Bipolar Disorders intended to write a protocol for light therapy in bipolar depressive episodes. METHOD Narrative review of several systematic reviews, two clinicianβs guides and deliberation with the sub-commission Guidelines of the Dutch Ophthalmologic Society. RESULTS The following indication was established: depressive episode, with or without seasonal features, in bipolar I or II disorder, including subsyndromal (depressive) seasonal complaints. The list of relative contra-indications (pre-existent retinal illnesses, systemic illnesses with effect on the retina and use of photosensitive medication) was shortened. In this case the medical professional discusses the possibility of an ophthalmologic consultation with the patient. Use of a mood stabilizer/antimanic medication in order to prevent mania or a mixed episode is only necessary in a depressive episode in bipolar I, but not in bipolar II disorder. Standard treatment is 10.000 lux white light during 30 minutes in the morning. CONCLUSION There is sufficient evidence to propose light therapy in a bipolar depressive episode with or without seasonal features.</p
