SUMMARY This article describes how a scattered group of women in Bombay, who cook for male migrant workers in their own homes, organised to improve their working conditions. Although isolated from each other, and with interests in conflict with their worker customers, they have succeeded in freeing themselves from reliance on money?lenders, and in winning some recognition of their rights as workers. RESUME Organiser l'Annapurna Cet article décrit comment un groupe de femmes isolées qui font la cuisine à Bombay chez les travailleurs migrants masculins, se sont organisées pour améliorer leurs conditions de travail. Bien qu'isolées les unes autres, et quoique leurs intérêts aillent à l'encontre de ceux de leurs clients, elles ont réussi à ne plus faire appel aux prêteurs sur gages et à obtenir certains droits. Gandhi and the Ethic of Active Non-Violence

This paper argues that Gandhi’s active non-violence is an ethic that (a) resists the use of illegitimate violence to solve conflict and (b) seeks to remove the material and moral conditions that engender conflict. It gets its ultimate strength from “soul-force” as Gandhi calls it. Its effectiveness depends on the deep spiritual life of its practitioners, the respect for human rights and social justice. A society can be governed by non-violent means only if the vast majority of its members are already non-violent in their civic behavior. Gandhi does not advocate radical pacifism as he recognizes the right of self-defense, and the legitimacy of the constitutionally limited state. The reduction, not the elimination, of violence is its general policy

Cette étude offre un aperçu des besoins en logement des ménages autochtones vivant dans les collectivités des Premières nations du Québec en 2001. Plus du tiers des ménages autochtones vivant dans ces collectivités ont mentionné que leur logement n’était pas adéquat. L’estimation des besoins et de la demande future de logements dans les réserves pour la période de 25 ans allant de 2002 à 2026 tient compte des conditions actuelles d’habitation, de la mise aux normes canadiennes, du vieillissement du parc, de la structure des familles et des perspectives démographiques. Les investissements nécessaires supplémentaires par rapport aux sommes déjà prévues se chiffrent à plus de 2 milliards de dollars.This study provides an insight into the housing needs of Aboriginal households living in First Nations communities in Quebec in 2001. Over one third of Aboriginal households living in these communities reported that their housing was inadequate. Estimation of needs and of future demand for housing in these reserves for the 25 year period between 2002 and 2026 takes into account the housing circumstances, the alignment with Canadian norms, the aging of the housing stock, the family structures and demographic perspectives

Tijdens de eclips van 11 augustus was (van-af een goede plek) veel te zien: de parel-moeren corona, de rode chromosfeer, de purperen protuberansen, planeten en ster-ren, de oranje horizon rondom, de briljan-te Baileys beads bij tweede en derde con-tact, de vliegende schaduwen voor en na, de reacties van dier en mens. Veel te veel voor de luttele minuten, en helemaal te veel om je druk te maken over wat je op dat moment juist niet kon zien. Maar ook dat was spectaculair: het ontbreken van de Fraunhoferlijnen in het zonnespectrum. De binnencorona is het enige object in het hele zonnestelsel dat ze niet toont!
