    Water, waste, energy and food nexus in Brazil: Identifying a resource interlinkage research agenda through a systematic review

    The resource nexus consists of a framework to address interlinkages between natural resources and systems that provide water, energy, food and waste management. It transcends traditional assessments conducted in “silos”, raising trade-offs and synergies that are rarely acknowledged. The nexus framework is intrinsically context-specific, as each respective region has particularities in terms of critical interlinkages. Brazil is the world's eighth largest economy [1] and is heavily reliant on natural resources. This paper considers Brazil to be a textbook case for nexus research that identifies critical interlinkages that are neglected by literature, which is typically based on single-resource analysis. It proposes a research agenda to advance resource nexus assessments and improve resource governance in Brazil. We propose a novel method for nexus research, systematically reviewing geographical context-specific papers in relevant single nexus dimensions and establishing resource interlinkages that characterise research gaps and policy priorities. We found that 36% of practices reviewed involve more than one resource at a time, characterising interlinkages not analysed by the literature. Lastly, selected quantitative indicators were used to identify critical interlinkages by analysing the representativeness of practices in the national context, and the relevance of synergies or trade-offs for Brazil. Critical interlinkages in Brazil were found to be irrigation for energy crop expansion (water, food and energy); transport biofuels and fuelwood (water, energy, food); deforestation for new pasture (water, energy, food); and hydropower generation (water and energy). These are, therefore, priorities for future nexus research and for efforts to address synergies and trade-offs in resource governance

    On the soliton width in the incommensurate phase of spin-Peierls systems

    We study using bosonization techniques the effects of frustration due to competing interactions and of the interchain elastic couplings on the soliton width and soliton structure in spin-Peierls systems. We compare the predictions of this study with numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization of finite chains. We conclude that frustration produces in general a reduction of the soliton width while the interchain elastic coupling increases it. We discuss these results in connection with recent measurements of the soliton width in the incommensurate phase of CuGeO_3.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 2 figures embedded in the tex

    GaAs delta-doped quantum wire superlattice characterization by quantum Hall effect and Shubnikov de Haas oscillations

    Quantum wire superlattices (1D) realized by controlled dislocation slipping in quantum well superlattices (2D) (atomic saw method) have already shown magnetophonon oscillations. This effect has been used to investigate the electronic properties of such systems and prove the quantum character of the physical properties of the wires. By cooling the temperature and using pulsed magnetic field up to 35 T, we have observed both quantum Hall effect (QHE) and Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations for various configurations of the magnetic field. The effective masses deduced from the values of the fundamental fields are coherent with those obtained with magnetophonon effect. The field rotation induces a change in the resonance frequencies due to the modification of the mass tensor as in a (3D) electron gas. In view the QHE, the plateaus observed in rho_yz are dephased relatively to rho_zz minima which seems to be linked to the dephasing of the minima of the density of states of the broadened Landau levels

    Transient Sub-Poissonian Distribution for Single-Mode Lasers

    In this paper, the transient photon statistics for single-mode lasers is investigated by making use of the theory of quantum electrodynamics. By taking into account of the transitive time l,we obtain the master equation for Jaynes-Cummings model. The relation between the Mandel factor and the time is obtained by directly solving the master equation. The result shows that a transient phenomenon from the transient super-Poissonian distribution to the transient sub-Poissonian distribution occurs for single-mode lasers. In addition, the influences of the thermal light field and the cavity loss on the transient sub-Poissonian distribution are also studied

    Application of a dynamic subgrid-scale model to turbulent recirculating flows

    The dynamic subgrid-scale model of Germano et al. is implemented in a finite volume formulation and applied to the simulation of turbulent flow in a three-dimensional lid-driven cavity at Reynolds number of 7500. The filtering operation is carried out in physical space, and the model coefficient is calculated locally. The computed mean and rms velocities as well as the Reynolds stress are compared with experimental data. It is shown that backscatter from small to large scales is necessary to sustain turbulent fluctuations. The model is being applied to the simulation of turbulent flows in a stratified and rotating environment in complex geometries

    Contextual cueing: implicit memory of tactile context facilitates tactile search

    In visual search, participants detect and subsequently discriminate targets more rapidly when these are embedded in repeatedly encountered distractor arrangements, an effect termed contextual cueing (Chun & Jiang Cognitive Psychology, 36, 28–71, 1998). However, whereas previous studies had explored contextual cueing exclusively in visual search, in the present study we examined the effect in tactile search using a novel tactile search paradigm. Participants were equipped with vibrotactile stimulators attached to four fingers on each hand. A given search array consisted of four stimuli (i.e., two items presented to each hand), with the target being an odd-one-out feature singleton that differed in frequency (Exps. 1 and 2) or waveform (Exp. 3) from the distractor elements. Participants performed a localization (Exps. 1 and 2) or discrimination (Exp. 3) task, delivering their responses via foot pedals. In all three experiments, reaction times were faster when the arrangement of distractor fingers predicted the target finger. Furthermore, participants were unable to explicitly discriminate repeated from nonrepeated tactile configurations (Exps. 2 and 3). This indicates that the tactile modality can mediate the formation of configural representations and use these representations to guide tactile search
