    Superconducting cavity transducer for resonant gravitational radiation antennas

    Parametric transducers, such as superconducting rf cavities, can boost the bandwidth and sensitivity of the next generation resonant antennas, thanks to a readily available technology. We have developed a fully coupled dynamic model of the system "antenna--transducer" and worked out some estimates of signal--to--noise ratio and the stability conditions in various experimental configurations. We also show the design and the prototype of a rf cavity which, together with a suitable read--out electronic, will be used as a test bench for the parametric transducer.Comment: 7 pages, 3 eps figures.     Les auteurs décrivent leur expérience de l’examen cytologique du produit d’aspiration par aiguille fine de dix-sept mastocytomes du Chien. L’utilisation de la coloration de May-Grünwald-Giemsa rapide (Diff-Quick) a toujours permis d’identifier les mastocytomes et de les distinguer des autres tumeurs cutanées. La coloration de Papanicolaou a permis de classer ces tumeurs en trois grades, identiques à ceux définis par Patnaïk par examen histolo- gique. Dans deux cas, les examens cytologiques ont permis d’objectiver la réponse thérapeutique au traitement par la L-Asparaginase.Cytological analysis of seventeen canine mastocytoma after aspiration by a fine needle was performed. The use of the quick May-Grunwald-Giemsa coloration (Diff-Quick) has always allowed the distinction of the mastocytoma from others skin tumors. The Papanicolaou coloration, allowed to classify those tumors in three grades which are similar to those definited by Patnaïk by histological exa mination. In two cases, cytologycal examination indicated that it was possible to objectif the therapeutical answer to the treatment by the L-Asparaginase

    Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Regulates the Retrotranslocation of Trypanosoma Cruzi Calreticulin to the Cytosol

    For most secretory pathway proteins, crossing the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane is an irreversible process. However, in some cases this flow can be reversed. For instance, misfolded proteins retained in the ER are retrotranslocated to the cytosol to be degraded by the proteasome. This mechanism, known as ER associated degradation (ERAD), is exploited by several bacterial toxins to gain access to the cytosol. Interestingly, some ER resident proteins can also be detected in the cytosol or nucleus, calreticulin (CRT) being the most studied. Here we show that in Trypanosoma cruzi a minor fraction of CRT localized to the cytosol. ER calcium depletion, but not increasing cytosolic calcium, triggered the retrotranslocation of CRT in a relatively short period of time. Cytosolic CRT was subsequently degraded by the proteasome. Interestingly, the single disulfide bridge of CRT is reduced when the protein is located in the cytosol. The effect exerted by ER calcium was strictly dependent on the C-terminal domain (CRT-C), since a CRT lacking it was totally retained in the ER, whereas the localization of an unrelated protein fused to CRT-C mirrored that of endogenous CRT. This finding expands the regulatory mechanisms of protein sorting and may represent a new crossroad between diverse physiological processes

    Hermitian quark mass matrices with four texture zeros

    We provide a complete and systematic analysis of hermitian, hierarchical quark mass matrices with four texture zeros. Using triangular mass matrices, each pattern of texture zeros is readily shown to lead to a definite relation between the CKM parameters and the quark masses. Nineteen pairs are found to be consistent with present data, and one other is marginally acceptable.     Phenomenological Consequences of Right-handed Down Squark Mixings

    The mixings of dRd_R quarks, hidden from view in Standard Model (SM), are naturally the largest if one has an Abelian flavor symmetry. With supersymmetry (SUSY) their effects can surface via d~R\tilde d_R squark loops. Squark and gluino masses are at TeV scale, but they can still induce effects comparable to SM in BdB_d (or BsB_s) mixings, while D0D^0 mixing could be close to recent hints from data. In general, CP phases would be different from SM, as may be indicated by recent B Factory data. Presence of non-standard soft SUSY breakings with large tanβ\tan\beta could enhance bdγb\to d\gamma (or sγs\gamma) transitions.Comment: Version to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

    Improved Determination of the CKM Angle alpha from B to pi pi decays

    Motivated by a recent paper that compares the results of the analysis of the CKM angle alpha in the frequentist and in the Bayesian approaches, we have reconsidered the information on the hadronic amplitudes, which helps constraining the value of alpha in the Standard Model. We find that the Bayesian method gives consistent results irrespective of the parametrisation of the hadronic amplitudes and that the results of the frequentist and Bayesian approaches are equivalent when comparing meaningful probability ranges or confidence levels. We also find that from B to pi pi decays alone the 95% probability region for alpha is the interval [80^o,170^o], well consistent with recent analyses of the unitarity triangle where, by using all the available experimental and theoretical information, one gets alpha = (93 +- 4)^o. Last but not least, by using simple arguments on the hadronic matrix elements, we show that the unphysical region alpha ~ 0, present in several experimental analyses, can be eliminated.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Party finance reform as constitutional engineering? The effectiveness and unintended consequences of party finance reform in France and Britain

    In both Britain and France, party funding was traditionally characterized by a laissez faire approach and a conspicuous lack of regulation. In France, this was tantamount to a 'legislative vacuum'. In the last two decades, however, both countries have sought to fundamentally reform their political finance regulation regimes. This prompted, in Britain, the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, and in France a bout of 'legislative incontinence' — profoundly transforming the political finance regime between 1988 and 1995. This article seeks to explore and compare the impacts of the reforms in each country in a bid to explain the unintended consequences of the alternative paths taken and the effectiveness of the new party finance regime in each country. It finds that constitutional engineering through party finance reform is a singularly inexact science, largely due to the imperfect nature of information, the limited predictability of cause and effect, and the constraining influence of non-party actors, such as the Constitutional Council in France, and the Electoral Commission in Britain
