Slow positron beam generator for lifetime studies

    Get PDF
A slow positron beam generator uses a conductive source residing between two test films. Moderator pieces are placed next to the test film on the opposite side of the conductive source. A voltage potential is applied between the moderator pieces and the conductive source. Incident energetic positrons: (1) are emitted from the conductive source; (2) are passed through test film; and (3) isotropically strike moderator pieces before diffusing out of the moderator pieces as slow positrons, respectively. The slow positrons diffusing out of moderator pieces are attracted to the conductive source which is held at an appropriate potential below the moderator pieces. The slow positrons have to pass through the test films before reaching the conductive source. A voltage is adjusted so that the potential difference between the moderator pieces and the conductive source forces the positrons to stop in the test films. Measurable annihilation radiation is emitted from the test film when positrons annihilate (combine) with electrons in the test film

About the modern "experimental value" of W boson width.

    Get PDF
It is shown that the methods which have been used up to now to determine the WW width from the ppˉp\bar p data confirm the SM predictions for some combinations of various phenomenological parameters, however, they do not give an independent value for the WW width. Moreover, the accuracy that could be achieved in future experimental checks of SM predictions for such quantities is limited by effects which require detailed theoretical study.Comment: Latex, 8 pages

A study of physical properties of ODPA-p-PDA polyimide films

    Get PDF
Physical properties were investigated of ODPA-p-PDA polyimide films, including their lower molecular weight versions with phthalimide endcaps. Free volume, determined by low energy positron annihilation in the test films, was the major parameter of interest since all other physical properties are ostensibly related to it. It affects the dielectric constant as well as the saturation moisture pickup of the test films. An empirical relation was developed between the free volume and molecular weight of the test films, comparable to the Mark-Houwink relation between the polymer solution viscosity and the molecular weight. Development of such a relation constitutes a unique achievement since it enables researchers to estimate the molecular weight of an intractable polymer in solid state for the first time

A slow positron beam generator for lifetime studies

    Get PDF
A slow positron beam generator using well-annealed polycrystalline tungsten moderators and a Na-22 positron source was developed. A 250 micro c source, deposited on a 2.54 micron thick aluminized mylar, is sandwiched between two (2.54 cm x 2.54 cm x 0.0127 cm) tungsten pieces. Two (2.54 cm x 2.54 cm x t cm) test polymer films insulate the two tungsten moderator pieces from the aluminized mylar source holder (t=0.00127 to 0.0127). A potential difference of 10 to 100 volts--depending on the test polymer film thickness (t)--is applied between the tungsten pieces and the source foil. Thermalized positrons diffusing out of the moderator pieces are attracted to the source foil held at an appropriate potential below the moderator pieces. These positrons have to pass through the test polymer films before they can reach the source foil. The potential difference between the moderator pieces and the aluminized mylar is so adjusted as to force the positrons to stop in the test polymer films. Thus the new generator becomes an effective source of positrons for assaying thin polymer films for their molecular morphology

Forward-Backward Asymmetries in Hadronically Produced Lepton Pairs

    Get PDF
It has now become possible to observe appreciable numbers of hadronically produced lepton pairs in mass ranges where the contributions of the photon and Z0Z^0 are comparable. Consequently, in the reaction ppˉ++p \bar p \to \ell^- \ell^+ + \ldots, substantial forward-backward asymmetries can be seen. These asymmetries provide a test of the electroweak theory in a new regime of energies, and can serve as diagnostics for any new neutral vector bosons coupling both to quarks and to charged lepton pairs.Comment: 11 pages, latex, 4 uuencoded figures sent separately, Fig. 2 revise

Is the Top Quark Really Heavier than the WW Boson?

Scalar induced top decays may drastically suppress B(tν+jet)B(t\to \ell\nu + jet) and still hide the top below MWM_W. The ppˉp\bar p collider experiments should enlarge the scope and study the mtB(tνj)m_t - B(t\to\ell\nu j) plane. Specific model signatures such as tch0cbbˉt\to ch^0\to cb\bar b (multiple high pTp_T bb-jets) and tbH+bcsˉt\to bH^+\to bc\bar s, bτ+νb\tau^+\nu (with $B(t\to b\tau\nu) \ \raisebox{-.5ex}{\rlap{\sim}} \raisebox{.4ex}{<<}\ 1/3)shouldbeexplored.Withoutrulingoutthesepossibilities,isolatedleptonsignalsinthefuturemightactuallybeduetothe4thgeneration) should be explored. Without ruling out these possibilities, isolated lepton signals in the future might actually be due to the 4th generation t^\primeor or b^\prime$ quark, while top quark and toponium physics could still turn up at LEP-II.Comment: 11 pages (RevTex), 3 figures (not included), NTUTH-93-0

The Analysis of Multijet Events Produced at High Energy Hadron Colliders

    Get PDF
We define and discuss a set of (4N - 4) parameters that can be used to analyse events in which N jets have been produced in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. These multijet variables are the multijet mass and (4N - 5) independent dimensionless parameters. To illustrate the use of the variables QCD predictions are presented for events with up to five jets produced at the Fermilab Tevatron Proton-Antiproton Collider. These QCD predictions are compared with the predictions of a model in which multijet events uniformly populate the N-body phase-space

Increased Yield of ttbb at Hadron Colliders in Low-Energy Supersymmetry

    Get PDF
Light bottom squarks and gluinos have been invoked to explain the b quark pair production excess at the Tevatron. We investigate the associated production of ttbb at hadron colliders in this scenario, and find that the rates for this process are enhanced over the Standard Model prediction. If light gluinos exist, it may be possible to detect them at the Tevatron, and they could easily be observed at the LHC.Comment: 5p, references added, version accepted to PR

Effects of the R-parity violation in the minimal supersymmetric standard model on dilepton pair production at the CERN LHC

    Get PDF
We investigate in detail the effects of the R-parity lepton number violation in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) on the parent process ppe+e+Xpp \to e^+ e^- + X at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The numerical comparisons between the contributions of the R-parity violating effects to the parent process via the Drell-Yan subprocess and the gluon-gluon fusion are made. We find that the R-violating effects on e+ee^+ e^- pair production at the LHC could be significant. The results show that the cross section of the e+e e^+ e^- pair productions via gluon-gluon collision at the LHC can be of the order of 10210^2 fb, and this subprocess maybe competitive with the production mechanism via the Drell-Yan subprocess. We give also quantitatively the analysis of the effects from both the mass of sneutrino and coupling strength of the R-parity violating interactions.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Phys. Next-to-Leading Order Analysis of Inclusive and Semi-inclusive Polarized Data

    Get PDF
We present a combined next-to-leading order QCD analysis to data on both inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering asymmetries. Performing NLO QCD global fits with different sets of observables, we evaluate the impact of the very recent semi-inclusive results presented by SMC in the extraction of NLO polarized parton distributions.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures include
