Establishing the potential for using routine data on Incapacity Benefit to assess the local impact of policy initiatives
<i>Background</i>: Incapacity Benefit (IB) is the key contributory benefit for people who are incapable of work because of illness or disability.
<i>Methods</i>: The aims were to establish the utility of routinely collected data for local evaluation and to provide a descriptive epidemiology of the IB population in Glasgow and Scotland for the period 2000–05 using data supplied by the Department for Work and Pensions.
<i>Results</i>: Glasgow's IB population is large in absolute and relative terms but is now falling, mainly due to a decrease in on flow. Claimants, tend to be older, have a poor work history and suffer from mental health problems. The rate of decline has been greater in Glasgow than Scotland, although the rate of on flow is still higher.
<i>Conclusions</i>: Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data can be used locally to provide important insights into the dynamics of the IB population. However, to be truly useful, more work needs to be undertaken to combine the DWP data with other information
Patients\u27 satisfaction with mental health nursing interventions in the management of anxiety: Results of a questionnaire study
Objective: Patients’ satisfaction is a significant indicator of the quality of care provided in a health setting. The purpose ofthis study was to identify aspects of mental health nursing care that are most likely to influence satisfaction with patientswho are experiencing anxiety in two private mental health care setting.Method: Study design: A survey of a sample of patients in two private mental health hospitals in Sydney, Australia wherepatients were asked to evaluate their overall experience of this episode of care and to complete the Patients’ SatisfactionQuestionnaire on specific aspects of their care for anxiety. Two hundred (200) Questionnaires were left with theparticipants to be completed at discharge, and there were 189 (94%) questionnaires returned.Results: One hundred and eighty nine patients (189) completed the survey. Representing 94% of respondents theyindicated that they were satisfied with the mental health nurses intervention for their anxiety. There were no significantdifferences found between genders, age groups, marital status, number of admissions and duration of hospitalisations. Amultiple linear regression indicated that the major determinants of patient satisfaction were emotional support and respectfor patient preferences. The results of satisfaction scores demonstrated evidence of construct validity of total scale withtotal mean rating of all domain 3.70 (SD=0.67) and Reliability coefficients for the total scale were .93, however, meanrating for the 5 domains was 3.69 (SD = 0.66).Conclusions: The finding of this preliminary patients’ satisfaction study suggests that mental health nurses withappropriate education and supervision can provide an effective therapeutic approach to patients who are experiencinganxiety in these two private mental health settings
Anomalous Magnetic Properties in Ni50Mn35In15
We present here a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic ordering in
Ni50Mn35In15 composition. A concomitant first order martensitic transition and
the magnetic ordering occurring in this off-stoichiometric Heusler compound at
room temperature signifies the multifunctional character of this magnetic shape
memory alloy. Unusual features are observed in the dependence of the
magnetization on temperature that can be ascribed to a frustrated magnetic
order. It is compelling to ascribe these features to the cluster type
description that may arise due to inhomogeneity in the distribution of magnetic
atoms. However, evidences are presented from our ac susceptibility, electrical
resistivity and dc magnetization studies that there exists a competing
ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order within crystal structure of this
system. We show that excess Mn atoms that substitute the In atoms have a
crucial bearing on the magnetic order of this compound. These excess Mn atoms
are antiferromagnetically aligned to the other Mn, which explains the peculiar

The Evolution of Radio Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift
We describe a new estimate of the radio galaxy 1.4 GHz luminosity function
and its evolution at intermediate redshifts (z~0.4). Photometric redshifts and
color selection have been used to select Bj<23.5 early-type galaxies from the
Panoramic Deep Fields, a multicolor survey of two 25 sq deg fields.
Approximately 230 radio galaxies have then been selected by matching early-type
galaxies with NVSS radio sources brighter than 5 mJy. Estimates of the 1.4 GHz
luminosity function of radio galaxies measure significant evolution over the
observed redshift range. For an Omega_M=1 cosmology the evolution of the radio
power is consistent with luminosity evolution where P(z)=P(0)(1+z)^{k_L} and
3<k_L<5. The observed evolution is similar to that observed for UVX and X-ray
selected AGN and is consistent with the same physical process being responsible
for the optical and radio luminosity evolution of AGN.Comment: 26 pages, 9 Figures, Accepted for Publication in A
The Weak Clustering of Gas-Rich Galaxies
We examine the clustering properties of HI-selected galaxies through an
analysis of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey Catalogue (HICAT) two-point
correlation function. Various sub-samples are extracted from this catalogue to
study the overall clustering of HI-rich galaxies and its dependence on
luminosity, HI gas mass and rotational velocity. These samples cover the entire
southern sky Dec < 0 deg, containing up to 4,174 galaxies over the radial
velocity range 300-12,700 km/s. A scale length of r_0 = 3.45 +/- 0.25 Mpc/h and
slope of gamma = 1.47 +/- 0.08 is obtained for the HI-rich galaxy real-space
correlation function, making gas-rich galaxies among the most weakly clustered
objects known. HI-selected galaxies also exhibit weaker clustering than
optically selected galaxies of comparable luminosities. Good agreement is found
between our results and those of synthetic HI-rich galaxy catalogues generated
from the Millennium Run CDM simulation. Bisecting HICAT using different
parameter cuts, clustering is found to depend most strongly on rotational
velocity and luminosity, while the dependency on HI mass is marginal. Splitting
the sample around v_rot = 108 km/s, a scale length of r_0 = 2.86 +/- 0.46 Mpc/h
is found for galaxies with low rotational velocities compared to r_0 = 3.96 +/-
0.33 Mpc/h for the high rotational velocity sample.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Surface Properties of the Half- and Full-Heusler Alloys
Using a full-potential \textit{ab-initio} technique I study the electronic
and magnetic properties of the (001) surfaces of the half-Heusler alloys,
NiMnSb, CoMnSb and PtMnSb and of the full-Heusler alloys CoMnGe, CoMnSi
and CoCrAl. The MnSb terminated surfaces of the half-Heusler compounds
present properties similar to the bulk compounds and, although the
half-metallicity is lost, an important spin-polarisation at the Fermi level. In
contrast to this the Ni terminated surface shows an almost zero net
spin-polarisation. While the bulk CoMnGe and CoMnSi are almost
half-ferromagnetic, their surfaces lose the half-metallic character and the net
spin-polarisation at the Fermi level is close to zero. Contrary to these
compounds the CrAl terminated (001) surface of CoCrAl shows a spin
polarisation of about 84%.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Electronic structure and spectroscopy of the quaternary Heusler alloy CoCrFeAl
Quaternary Heusler alloys CoCrFeAl with varying Cr to Fe
ratio were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The electronic
structure and spectroscopic properties were calculated using the full
relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker method with coherent potential
approximation to account for the random distribution of Cr and Fe atoms as well
as random disorder. Magnetic effects are included by the use of spin dependent
potentials in the local spin density approximation.
Magnetic circular dichroism in X-ray absorption was measured at the
edges of Co, Fe, and Cr of the pure compounds and the alloy in order to
determine element specific magnetic moments. Calculations and measurements show
an increase of the magnetic moments with increasing iron content. Resonant
(560eV - 800eV) soft X-ray as well as high resolution - high energy (keV) hard X-ray photo emission was used to probe the density of the
