The Path to Entrepreneurship: The Role of Social Networks in Driving Entrepreneurial Learning and Education

    Get PDF
This research aims to examine the extent to which the way entrepreneurs learn is reflected in entrepreneurship education, highlighting the existing gap between the literature on entrepreneurial learning and the practice of entrepreneurship education. To explore entrepreneurial learning in-depth, we adopted an interpretivist-constructivist approach that involves participant observation at coworking spaces and semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs. Data were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. Major findings indicate that social networks play a vital role in facilitating entrepreneurial learning, with context and network serving as essential learning mechanisms. However, these elements are often disregarded in traditional entrepreneurship education approaches. This study highlights a gap in the literature where the focus of entrepreneurial learning is primarily on entrepreneurs, while entrepreneurship education primarily focuses on students and educators. The study’s contribution is its emphasis on the importance of social networks in entrepreneurial learning and its potential for redesigning entrepreneurship education. By bridging the gap between entrepreneurial learning and entrepreneurship education, it is possible to create educational approaches that more closely mimic how entrepreneurs learn in real life, potentially leading to more impactful entrepreneurial activity

The KaVA and KVN Pulsar Project

We present our work towards using the Korean VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometer) Network (KVN) and VLBI Exploration of Radio Astronomy (VERA) arrays combined into the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) for observations of radio pulsars at high frequencies (≃\simeq22-GHz). Pulsar astronomy is generally focused at frequencies approximately 0.3 to several GHz and pulsars are usually discovered and monitored with large, single-dish, radio telescopes. For most pulsars, reduced radio flux is expected at high frequencies due to their steep spectrum, but there are exceptions where high frequency observations can be useful. Moreover, some pulsars are observable at high frequencies only, such as those close to the Galactic Center. The discoveries of a radio-bright magnetar and a few dozen extended Chandra sources within 15 arc-minute of the Galactic Center provide strong motivations to make use of the KaVA frequency band for searching pulsars in this region. Here, we describe the science targets and report progresses made from the KVN test observations for known pulsars. We then discuss why KaVA pulsar observations are compelling.Comment: To appear in PASJ KaVA Special Issu

Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH): clinical manifestations, genetic heterogeneity and mutation continuum

    Get PDF
Autosomal Recessive Primary Microcephaly (MCPH) is a rare disorder of neurogenic mitosis characterized by reduced head circumference at birth with variable degree of mental retardation. In MCPH patients, brain size reduced to almost one-third of its original volume due to reduced number of generated cerebral cortical neurons during embryonic neurogensis. So far, seven genetic loci (MCPH1-7) for this condition have been mapped with seven corresponding genes (MCPH1, WDR62, CDK5RAP2, CEP152, ASPM, CENPJ, and STIL) identified from different world populations. Contribution of ASPM and WDR62 gene mutations in MCPH World wide is more than 50%. By and large, primary microcephaly patients are phenotypically indistinguishable, however, recent studies in patients with mutations in MCPH1, WDR62 and ASPM genes showed a broader clinical and/or cellular phenotype. It has been proposed that mutations in MCPH genes can cause the disease phenotype by disturbing: 1) orientation of mitotic spindles, 2) chromosome condensation mechanism during embryonic neurogenesis, 3) DNA damage-response signaling, 4) transcriptional regulations and microtubule dynamics, 5) certain unknown centrosomal mechanisms that control the number of neurons generated by neural precursor cells. Recent discoveries of mammalian models for MCPH have open up horizons for researchers to add more knowledge regarding the etiology and pathophysiology of MCPH. High incidence of MCPH in Pakistani population reflects the most probable involvement of consanguinity. Genetic counseling and clinical management through carrier detection/prenatal diagnosis in MCPH families can help reducing the incidence of this autosomal recessive disorder

Agile Quality Requirements Elaboration:A Proposal and Evaluation

The increasing success and user satisfaction of agile methods’ application in their original context (eg small co-located teams), motivated large organizations to utilize agile methods to deal with the rapidly changing markets and the distributed global workforce. Several studies have reported a variety of quality requirements (QRs) challenges in large-scale distributed agile (LSDA) context, so a recent empirical study has identified 15 QRs challenges in LSDA projects. This paper proposes an approach based on the concept of goal documentation to deal with the 15 QRs challenges reported previously. Our proposal, the Agile Quality Requirements Elaboration (AQRE) approach, introduces a new organizational role and a two-step process to elaborate high-level goals (s) into epics and user stories alongside QRs. The fitness and the usefulness of AQRE are evaluated by using a focus group with eight practitioners in the IT department of a large Dutch government organization. The evaluation indicated that 12 of the 15 QRs challenges could be mitigated by the AQRE. Our main contribution is two-fold,(i) we proposed a solution approach to deal with QRs challenges in LSDA context, and (ii) our evaluation provided empirical evidence about its usefulness in realworld context

Cerebral venous thrombosis At high altitude

    Get PDF
Cerebral Venous Thrombosis (CVT) is one of the rarest causes of stroke. It is described as complete or partial occlusion of the sinuses or cortical veins of the brain. A relationship between high altitude (HA) and cerebral venous thrombosis has been long suspected due to various case reports and studies, however, the exact underlying mechanisms and etiologies are highly complex and debatable. In this article review we discuss the incidence etiologies, risk factors, clinical presentations and management of CVT at high altitude. CVT majorly affects young people [2]. It presents with a wide variety of clinical presentations due to the complexity of cerebral venous architecture and a combination of edema, increased intracranial pressure and venous infarct. Numerous etiologies have been suggested for the incidence of CVT; varying from dehydration, increased blood viscosity leading to endothelial injury, immobility, inflammation, genetic expression of certain prothrombotic entities, triggering of the coagulation cascade, platelet dysfunction and underlying coagulation disorders. Individuals with history of coagulation abnormalities should be screened for underlying thrombophilias and cautiously ascend to higher altitudes. CVT should be considered in all neurological clinical presentations at high altitude. High altitude trekkers should be educated on how to keep hydrated and avoid immobility, exposure to extreme cold and seeking immediate help for symptoms like headache and disturbed mental status

The strategic role of middle managers in the formulation and implementation of digital transformation projects

    Get PDF
Middle managers play a crucial role in implementing digital strategy. They directly influence the success or failure of an organization's digital transformation. They are the enablers of digital strategy implementation and company transformation and sometimes can cast a sabotaging shadow side when not involved and engaged in the process. However, there are ways to engage them and divert their sabotaging behavior
