Doubly Enhanced Skyrmions in ν=2\nu =2 Bilayer Quantum Hall States

By tilting the samples in the magnetic field, we measured and compared the Skyrmion excitations in the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) state at the Landau-level filling factor ν=2\nu =2 and in the monolayer QH state at ν=1\nu =1. The observed number of flipped spins is Ns=14N_s=14 in the bilayer system with a large tunneling gap, and Ns=7N_s=7 in the bilayer system with a small tunneling gap, while it is Ns=7N_s=7 in the monolayer system. The difference is interpreted due to the interlayer exchange interaction. Moreover, we have observed seemingly preferred numbers Ns=14,7,1N_s=14,7,1 for the flipped spins by tilting bilayer samples.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Effects of combined administration of FK 506 and the purine biosynthesis inhibitors mizoribine or mycophenolic acid on lymphocyte DNA synthesis and T cell activation molecule expression in human mixed lymphocyte cultures

Our objective was to obtain new information on the in vitro antilymphocytic action of the cytokine synthesis inhibitor FK 506 and the purine biosynthesis inhibitors mycophenolic acid (MPA; the active moiety of RS61443) and mizoribine (MZB) when used alone or in combination. When added at the initiation of six-day human mixed lymphocyte cultures (MLC), FK 506, MPA or MZB exhibited dose-dependent inhibition of T-lymphocyte DNA synthesis. FK 506, however, was 100-fold more potent than MPA, and 10000-fold more potent than MZB. Combination of FK 506 with either MPA or MZB, each at suboptional concentrations, produced no more than additive inhibitory effects on 3H thymidine incorporation. Two-colour flow cytometric analysis of lymphocytes revealed that none of the drugs affected cell surface activation molecule expression (CD25 = IL-2R 55 kD α-chain, HLA-DR or CD71 = transferrin receptor [TR]) on allostimulated CD4+ or CD8+ cells harvested at three days of culture. By day six, however, all three agents, at levels which markedly inhibited proliferation, suppressed the expression of activation markers on both CD4+ and CD8+ cells. Also at day six, inhibition of activation molecule expression on CD4+ cells was achieved with the combination of FK 506 and either MPA or MZB at concentrations which, on their own, were ineffective. These data provide new, additional information on the in vitro antilymphocytic action of FK 506, MPA and MZB when used alone and in combination. © 1993

Competition between Magnetic and Structural Transition in CrN

CrN is observed to undergo a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition accompanied by a shear distortion from cubic NaCl-type to orthorhombic structure. Our first-principle plane wave and ultrasoft pseudopotential calculations confirm that the distorted antiferromagnetic phase with spin configuration arranged in double ferromagnetic sheets along [110] is the most stable. Antiferromagnetic ordering leads to a large depletion of states around Fermi level, but it does not open a gap. Simultaneous occurence of structural distortion and antiferromagnetic order is analyzed.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

Absorption of Scintillation Light in a 100 \ell Liquid Xenonγ\gamma Ray Detector and Expected Detector Performance

An 800L liquid xenon scintillation γ\gamma ray detector is being developed for the MEG experiment which will search for μ+e+γ\mu^+\to\mathrm{e}^+\gamma decay at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a 100L prototype with an active volume of 372x372x496 mm3^3 to study the scintillation light absorption. We have developed a method to evaluate the light absorption, separately from elastic scattering of light, by measuring cosmic rays and α\alpha sources. By using a suitable purification technique, an absorption length longer than 100 cm has been achieved. The effects of the light absorption on the energy resolution are estimated by Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures (eps). Submitted to Nucl. Instr. and Meth.

Search for the Θ+\Theta^{+} pentaquark via the πpKX\pi^-p\to K^-X reaction at 1.92 GeV/cc

The Θ+\Theta^+ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the πpKX\pi^-p\to K^-X reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/c2c^2(FWHM) at J-PARC. π\pi^- meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/cc. No peak structure corresponding to the Θ+\Theta^+ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2^{\circ} to 15^{\circ} in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 μ\mub/sr in the mass region of 1.51-1.55 GeV/c2c^2.The upper limit of the Θ+\Theta^+ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/c2c^2 and 3.1 MeV/c2c^2 for JΘP=1/2+J^P_{\Theta}=1/2^+ and JΘP=1/2J^P_{\Theta}=1/2^-, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

Cross calibration between Hayabusa2/ONC-T and OSIRIS-REx/MapCam for comparative analyses between asteroids Ryugu and Bennu

Proximity observations of (162173) Ryugu by the telescopic Optical Navigation Camera onboard Hayabusa2 and (101955) Bennu by MapCam onboard Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer found opposite spectral trends of space weathering on these carbonaceous asteroids. Whether the space weathering trends on these asteroids evolved from the same starting spectra would place an important constraint for understanding their relation. However, systematic error between data obtained by the two imagers needed to be reduced for accurate comparison. To resolve this problem, we cross calibrated albedo and color data using the Moon as the common standard. We show that the cross-calibrated reflectance can be obtained by upscaling the pre-cross-calibrated reflectance of Bennu by 12 +/- 2% at v-band, reducing the systematic errors down to 2%. The cross-calibrated data show that Bennu is brighter by 16 +/- 2% at v-band and bluer in spectral slope by 0.19 +/- 0.05 (/um) than Ryugu. The spectra of fresh craters on Ryugu and Bennu before cross calibration appeared to follow two parallel trend lines with offset, but they converged to a single trend after cross calibration. Such a post-cross-calibration perspective raise the possibility that Ryugu and Bennu evolved from materials with similar visible spectra but evolved in diverging directions by space weathering. The divergent evolution can be caused by the difference in space weathering dose/process and/or composition of the starting material. Thus, comparing the composition of samples returned from Ryugu and Bennu may change the way we interpret the spectral variation of C-complex asteroids

The influence of thermal cycles on the microstructure of grade 92 steel

The microstructure in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welds made from the 9 wt pct chromium martensitic Grade 92 steel is complex and has not yet been completely understood. There is a lack of systematic microstructural investigations to define the different regions of the microstructure across the HAZ of Grade 92 steel welds as a function of the welding process. In this study, the microstructure in the HAZ of an as-fabricated single-pass bead-on-plate weld on a parent metal of Grade 92 steel was systematically investigated by using an extensive range of electron and ion-microscopy-based techniques. A dilatometer was used to apply controlled thermal cycles to simulate the microstructures in the different regions of the HAZ. A wide range of microstructural properties in the simulated materials were then characterized and compared with the experimental observations from the weld HAZ. It was found that the microstructure in the HAZ of a single-pass Grade 92 steel weld can be categorized as a function of a decreasing peak temperature reached as (1) the completely transformed (CT) region, in which the original matrix is completely reaustenitized with complete dissolution of the pre-existing secondary precipitate particles; (2) the partially transformed (PT) region, where the original matrix is partially reaustenitized along with a partial dissolution of the secondary precipitate particles from the original matrix; and (3) the overtempered (OT) region, where the pre-xisting precipitate particles coarsen. The PT region is considered to be the susceptible area for damage in the commonly reported HAZ failures in weldments constructed from these types of steels

New constraint on the existence of the mu+-> e+ gamma decay

The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+ gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, a version accepted in Phys. Rev. Let

    Get PDF
The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\ by using one of the most intense continuous μ+\mu^+ beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail. The paper is completed with a description of the equipment and techniques developed for the calibration in time and energy and the simulation of the whole apparatus.Comment: 59 pages, 90 figure
