    Dealing with daily emotions—supportive activities for the elderly in a municipal care setting

    There are diverse descriptions of supportive activities in nursing to be found in the literature. What they have in common is their association with good care outcomes, but they may differ depending on the context in which the care is given. In a Swedish municipal elderly care setting, registered nurses (RN) work in a consultative way and they describe a part of their tasks as comprising supportive activities without specifying what kind of supportive activities they mean. The aim of the study was to explore the main concern of the support given by RN to a group of patients in an elderly home care setting. The study was conducted using Grounded Theory. Data were collected using nonparticipant observations regarding the supportive activities of 12 RN at the home of 36 patients between the ages of 80 and 102. Most of the home visit lasted about 40 min but some lasted for 90 min. The central category was about dealing with daily emotions. This was done by encouraging the situation and reducing the patient's limitations, but situations also occurred in which there was a gap of support. Support was about capturing the emotions that the patient expressed for a particular moment, but there were also situations in which RN chose not to give support. To develop a holistic eldercare, more knowledge is needed about the factors causing the RN to choose not to provide support on some occasions

    RORγt + Treg to Th17 ratios correlate with susceptibility to Giardia infection

Here, we investigated Th17, Treg and IgA responses, and alterations in gut microbiota in two mouse lines with varying susceptibility to Giardia muris infection. Infected BALB/c mice shed significantly more cysts compared with C57BL/6 mice. Impaired control of infection in BALB/c mice was associated with lower Th17 activity and lower IgA levels compared with C57BL/6 mice. The limited metabolic activity, proliferation and cytokine production of Th17 cells in BALB/c mice was associated with higher proportions of intestinal Foxp3+RORγt+ regulatory T cells and BALB/c mice developed increased RORγt+ Treg:Th17 ratios in response to G. muris infection. Furthermore, G. muris colonization led to a significantly reduced evenness in the gut microbial communities of BALB/c mice. Our data indicate that differential susceptibility to Giardia infections may be related to RORγt+ Treg controlling Th17 activity and that changes in the microbiota composition upon Giardia infection partially depend on the host background

    To maximise survival during foraging animals must decide when and for how long foraging should be interrupted in order to avoid predators. Previous experiments have shown that birds that hear other individuals'alarm calls resume feeding later than those that see a flying predator. However, the responses of prey animals to enemies are highly context-de-pendent. We therefore investigated how birds respond to a threat less serious than a flying hawk depending on different amount of information about the predator. We used Great Tits dyads where one individual saw a perched model predator (sender), whereas the other individual could only hear the conspecific's mobbing calls (receiver). The sender re-sponded appropriately as shown by comparing their responses to how they responded to a control. We also found that while senders were exposed to the predator, receivers became more wary and reduced their activity level. However, despite the receivers having less in-formation about predation risk they still did not prolong the time they took to resume for-aging. Hence, once the mobbing ceased (and consequently the transmission of informa-tion about the predator stopped) there was no effect of only having second-hand informa-tion. This also shows that receiver's rely upon the sender's mobbing calls suggesting that mobbing calls may act as honest signals of the prevailing predation risk. In conclusion, our results support the view that responses of prey to predators are highly context-depend-ent and that birds' anti-predator responses are a result of an interaction between the amount of information and the level of the threat

    Infections with enteric nematodes result in systemic type 2 helper T (Th2) responses, expansion of immunoglobulin (Ig)G1 antibodies, and eosinophilia. Eosinophils have a supportive role in mucosal Th2 induction during airway hyperreactivity. Whether eosinophils affect the local T-cell and antibody response in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue during enteric infections is unknown. We infected eosinophil-deficient ΔdblGATA-1 mice with the Th2-inducing small intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus and found that parasite fecundity was decreased in the absence of eosinophils. A lack of eosinophils resulted in significantly augmented expression of GATA-3 and IL-4 by CD4(+) T cells during acute infection, a finding strictly limited to Peyer's patches (PP). The increase in IL-4-producing cells in ΔdblGATA-1 mice was particularly evident within the CXCR5(+)PD-1(+) T-follicular helper cell population and was associated with a switch of germinal centre B cells to IgG1 production and elevated serum IgG1 levels. In contrast, infected wild-type mice had a modest IgG1 response in the PP, whereas successfully maintaining a population of IgA(+) germinal center B cells. Our results suggest a novel role for eosinophils during intestinal infection whereby they restrict IL-4 responses by follicular T helper cells and IgG1 class switching in the PP to ensure maintenance of local IgA production
