    Creation of two-dimensional coulomb crystals of ions in oblate Paul traps for quantum simulations

    We develop the theory to describe the equilibrium ion positions and phonon modes for a trapped ion quantum simulator in an oblate Paul trap that creates two-dimensional Coulomb crystals in a triangular lattice. By coupling the internal states of the ions to laser beams propagating along the symmetry axis, we study the effective Ising spin-spin interactions that are mediated via the axial phonons and are less sensitive to ion micromotion. We find that the axial mode frequencies permit the programming of Ising interactions with inverse power law spin-spin couplings that can be tuned from uniform to r3r^{-3} with DC voltages. Such a trap could allow for interesting new geometrical configurations for quantum simulations on moderately sized systems including frustrated magnetism on triangular lattices or Aharonov-Bohm effects on ion tunneling.     PKA Phosphorylation of Src Mediates cAMP\u27s Inhibition of Cell Growth via Rap1

    In fibrolast cells, cAMP antagonizes growth factor activation of ERKs and cell growth via PKA and the small P protein Rap1. We demonstrate here that PKA\u27s activation of Rap1 was mediated by the Rap1 guanine nucleotide exchange factor C3G, the adaptor Crk-L, the scaffold protein Cbl, and the tyrosine kinase Src. Src was required for cAMP activation of Rap1 and the inhibition of ERKs and cell growth. PKA activated Src both in vitro and in vivo by phosphorylation was required for cAMP\u27s activation of Src and Rap1, as well as cAMP\u27s inhibition of ERKs and cell proliferation. This study identifies an antiproliferative role for Src in the physiological regulation of cell growth by cAMP

    B2-Adrenergic Receptor Activates Extracellular Signal-regulated Kinases (ERKs) via the Small G Protein Rap1 and the Serine/Threonine Kinase B-Raf

    G protein-coupled receptors can induce cellular proliferation by stimulating the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade. Heterotrimeric G proteins are composed of both a and By subunits that can signal independently to diverse intracellular signaling pathways including those that activate MAP kinases. In this study, we examined the ability of isoproterenol, an agonist of the B2-adrenergic receptor (b2AR), to stimulate extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs). Using HEK293 cells, which express endogenous b2AR, we show that isoproterenol stimulates ERKs via b2AR. This action of isoproterenol requires cAMP-dependent protein kinase and is insensitive to pertussis toxin, suggesting that Gas activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase is required. Interestingly, b2AR activates both the small G proteins Rap1 and Ras, but only Rap1 is capable of coupling to Raf isoforms. b2AR inhibits the Ras-dependent activation of both Raf isoforms Raf-1 and B-Raf, whereas Rap1 activation by isoproterenol recruits and activates B-Raf. b2AR activation of ERKs is not blocked by expression of RasN17, an interfering mutant of Ras, but is blocked by expression of either RapN17 or Rap1GAP1, both of which interfere with Rap1 signaling. We propose that isoproterenol can activate ERKs via Rap1 and BRaf in these cells

    Optimal Brain Surgeon and general network pruning

    The use of information from all second-order derivatives of the error function to perform network pruning (i.e., removing unimportant weights from a trained network) in order to improve generalization, simplify networks, reduce hardware or storage requirements, increase the speed of further training, and, in some cases, enable rule extraction, is investigated. The method, Optimal Brain Surgeon (OBS), is significantly better than magnitude-based methods and Optimal Brain Damage, which often remove the wrong weights. OBS, permits pruning of more weights than other methods (for the same error on the training set), and thus yields better generalization on test data. Crucial to OBS is a recursion relation for calculating the inverse Hessian matrix H^-1 from training data and structural information of the set. OBS permits a 76%, a 62%, and a 90% reduction in weights over backpropagation with weight decay on three benchmark MONK'S problems. Of OBS, Optimal Brain Damage, and a magnitude-based method, only OBS deletes the correct weights from a trained XOR network in every case. Finally, whereas Sejnowski and Rosenberg used 18,000 weights in their NETtalk network, we used OBS to prune a network to just 1,560 weights, yielding better generalization

    Simple method for measurement of feltability of rabbit hair

    In this work, a simple method for testing the felting propensity of carded top prepared from chemically treated, short and thick animal hairs, together with the necessary devices has been developed. Similar to the Aachen felting test, external force is applied to the wet sample of the fibres until felting occurs. The felting propensity is then determined from the dimensions of the resulting felted body. The main  difference is that the sample is prevented from disintegration during the procedure that usually occurs, when a standard Aachen test is applied.
