Quality of life and well-being of carers of people with dementia: are there differences between working and nonworking carers? Results from the IDEAL program

The aim of this study was to identify the differences in quality of life (QoL) and well-being between working and nonworking dementia carers and the relative contribution of psychological characteristics, caregiving experience, and social support. Multiple regressions modeled the contribution of working status, caregiver experiences, and psychological and social resources to carer QoL (EQ-5D) and well-being (WHO-5). After controlling for age, gender, carer–dyad relationship, and severity of dementia, working status contributed significant variance to EQ-5D (2%) but not to WHO-5 scores. Independent of working status, higher self-esteem and reduced stress contributed to variance in both models. Self-efficacy, social support, and positive perceptions of caregiving additionally contributed to higher WHO-5 scores. Working status associated with higher EQ-5D QoL; this may reflect the sustained sense of independence associated with supported work opportunities for carers. Outside of working status, the findings support the importance of psychological and social factors as targets to improved mental health for dementia carers

Local word embeddings for query expansion based on co-authorship and citations

© Copyright 2018 for the individual papers by the papers' authors. Word embedding techniques have gained a lot of interest from natural language processing researchers recently and they are valuable resource in identifying a list of semantically related terms for a search query. These related terms build a natural addition for query expansion, but might mismatch when the application domains use different jargon. Using the Skip-Gram algorithm of Word2Vec, terms are selected only from a specific subset of the corpus, which is extended by documents from co-authorship and citations. We demonstrate that locally-trained word embeddings with this extension provides a valuable augmentation and can improve retrieval performance. First result suggest that query expansion and word embeddings could also benefit from other related information

Semantic and Topological Patent Graphs: Analysis of Retrieval and Community Structure

© 2018 IEEE. Classification systems are a common way to organize knowledge. The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) is a hierarchical patent classification system which intends to uniformly assign at least a single class to every document. The classification system is often successfully used as a filtering mechanism to improve patent retrieval performance. Semantic information on the other hand frequently fails to do this or only helps marginally. In this work, we build two graphs to address this: a semantic graph out of the full textual content of the patents and a topological graph out of the classification system. The semantic graph is then compared against the topological graph. This provides a basis on when semantic retrieval techniques can be useful in patent retrieval. In this work, we further visualize search result graphs and their communities to represent classification information before search result filtering

Integrating and inspecting combined behavioral profiling and social network models in Destiny

In this paper two key venues of investigation in game analytics are combined: behavioral profiling and social network analysis. Both venues of research are well developed but combined they permit pattern evaluation across player performance and networks. Here, competitive networks covering almost 3.5 million players of the hybrid online shooter game Destiny are developed and combined with behavioral profiles based on match performance metrics and defined using archetypal analysis. The profiles are embedded in the networks along with other performance indicators for Destiny players. The social behavior of different archetypes is described. Network visualizations are presented which target the problem of making dense networked results actionable
