    A case of multiple abnormalities of the azygos venous system: a praeaortic interazygos vein

    The posterior thoracic wall, an area drained by the azygos venous system, is a common site for surgical intervention. Since the venous part of the cardiovascular system is subject to most common variation, abnormalities in the azygos venous system are often reported. Some of the anatomical variants have significant clinical implications for computed tomography image assessment and mediastinal surgery. During dissection of the posterior mediastinum in a 76 year-old Caucasian male cadaver we found a rare variation in the azygos venous system. The hemiazygos vein drained the left 9th to 11th left posterior intercostal veins. While passing ventrally to the aorta at the level of the body of the eighth thoracic vertebra it was joined by two separate vessels found to be the continuations of the 7th and 8th left posterior intercostal veins. The resultant dilated vessel, termed the "interazygos vein", then opened into the azygos vein on the right side of the vertebral column. Variation in the azygos venous system has often been reported, but the abnormality observed by us appears to be extremely rare. The interazygos vein passing ventrally to the aorta may mimic enlarged lymph nodes and cause misinterpretation of a computed tomography image or, if accidentally damaged during mediastinal surgery, may lead to intraoperative haemorrhage. To the best of our knowledge this report provides new data of potential clinical significance

    Numerical analysis of the tensioning cables anchorage zone of a bridge superstructure is presented in this paper. It aims to identify why severe concrete cracking occurs during the tensioning process in the vicinity of anchor heads. In order to simulate the tensioning, among others, a so-called local numerical model of a section of the bridge superstructure was created in the Abaqus Finite Element Method (FEM) environment. The model contains all the important elements of the analyzed section of the concrete bridge superstructure, namely concrete, reinforcement and the anchoring system. FEM analyses are performed with the inclusion of both material and geometric nonlinearities. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) constitutive relation from Abaqus is used to describe nonlinear concrete behaviour, which enables analysis of concrete damage and crack propagation. These numerical FEM results are then compared with actual crack patterns, which have been spotted and inventoried at the bridge construction site

    Composite GFRP u-shaped footbridge

    The paper presents proposals for the use of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites for the construction of engineering objects, known and commonly used in the shipbuilding industry. An example of a pedestrian footbridge was used in this case, which, despite the considerable thickness of the structural material, was made using infusion technology in one production cycle. The designed and produced footbridge span is durable, dynamically resistant, incombustible, easy to install and maintain, resistant to weather conditions and also aesthetically interesting. For footbridge production environmentally friendly PET foam core may be used. It may come from recycling of used plastic packages and which is produced with less energy consumption process and much less CO2 emission. The load bearing part of the structure (skin) is made of polymer laminate reinforced with glass fabrics (GFRP)

    This paper presents the study of the impact of vibration induced by the movement of the railway rolling stock on the Forum Gda艅sk structure. This object is currently under construction and is located over the railway tracks in the vicinity of the Gda艅sk G艂贸wny and Gda艅sk 艢r贸dmie艣cie railway stations. The analysis covers the influence of vibrations on the structure itself and on the people within. The in situ measurements on existing parts of the structure allow us to determine environmental excitations used for validation and verification of the derived FEM model. The numerical calculations made the estimates of the vibration amplitudes propagating throughout the whole structure possible.Analizowana konstrukcja to Wielofunkcyjny Kompleks Urbanistyczny "Forum Gda艅sk" zlokalizowany w Gda艅sku w rejonie Targu Siennego i Rakowego. Due to the unique and innovative form of the arch girder which is created by twisted pipes, the structural monitoring tests were conducted in the DIM Laboratory in the Department of Structural Mechanics and Bridge Structures at Gdansk University of Technology. K艂adka o konstrukcji pow艂okowej wykonana jest z kompozytu przek艂adkowego i jest wytworzona w ca艂o艣ci bez z艂膮czy w technologii infuzji. Artyku艂 przedstawia wyniki bada艅 do艣wiadczalnych ok艂adzin, pianki PET oraz testy 3- i 4-punktowego zginania belek wykonanych z materia艂u przek艂adkowego. Uzyskane wyniki bada艅 eksperymentalnych stanowi膮 dane walidacyjne do modeli numerycznych konstrukcji k艂adki u偶ytych w projektowaniu.The paper presents experimental study of sandwich composite used for an innovative foot-and-cycle bridge. The footbridge has a U-shaped shell structure made of sandwich consisting GFRP laminate covers and foam PET core. The bridge is manufactured using the infusion technology. Results of one and two directional tension tests of the laminates, compression tests of PET foam samples and 3-point as well as 4-point bending tests of sandwich beams are presented
