Deterministic Models for Traffic Jams
We study several deterministic one-dimensional traffic models. For integer
positions and velocities we find the typical high and low density phases
separated by a simple transition. If positions and velocities are continuous
variables the model shows self-organized criticality driven by the slowest car.Comment: 11 pages, latex, HLRZ preprint 46/93, UKAM-WP 93.13
Dynamical Phase Transition in One Dimensional Traffic Flow Model with Blockage
Effects of a bottleneck in a linear trafficway is investigated using a simple
cellular automaton model. Introducing a blockage site which transmit cars at
some transmission probability into the rule-184 cellular automaton, we observe
three different phases with increasing car concentration: Besides the free
phase and the jam phase, which exist already in the pure rule-184 model, the
mixed phase of these two appears at intermediate concentration with
well-defined phase boundaries. This mixed phase, where cars pile up behind the
blockage to form a jam region, is characterized by a constant flow. In the
thermodynamic limit, we obtain the exact expressions for several characteristic
quantities in terms of the car density and the transmission rate. These
quantities depend strongly on the system size at the phase boundaries; We
analyse these finite size effects based on the finite-size scaling.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX 13 postscript figures available upon

Two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries
A two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open
boundaries are investigated by computer simulations. The outflow of cars from
the system and the average velocity are investigated. The time sequences of the
outflow and average velocity have flicker noises in a jamming phase. The low
density behavior are discussed with simple jam-free approximation.Comment: 14 pages, Phys. Rev. E in press, PostScript figures available at

Long-term power-law fluctuation in Internet traffic
Power-law fluctuation in observed Internet packet flow are discussed. The
data is obtained by a multi router traffic grapher (MRTG) system for 9 months.
The internet packet flow is analyzed using the detrended fluctuation analysis.
By extracting the average daily trend, the data shows clear power-law
fluctuations. The exponents of the fluctuation for the incoming and outgoing
flow are almost unity. Internet traffic can be understood as a daily periodic
flow with power-law fluctuations.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Density waves in dry granular media falling through a vertical pipe
We report experimental measurements of density waves in granular materials
flowing down in a capillary tube. The density wave regime occurs at
intermediate flow rates between a low density free fall regime and a high
compactness slower flow.Comment: LaTeX file, 17 pages, 6 EPS figures, Phys.Rev.E (Feb.1996
Stability Analysis of Optimal Velocity Model for Traffic and Granular Flow under Open Boundary Condition
We analyzed the stability of the uniform flow solution in the optimal
velocity model for traffic and granular flow under the open boundary condition.
It was demonstrated that, even within the linearly unstable region, there is a
parameter region where the uniform solution is stable against a localized
perturbation. We also found an oscillatory solution in the linearly unstable
region and its period is not commensurate with the periodicity of the car index
space. The oscillatory solution has some features in common with the
synchronized flow observed in real traffic.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures. Typos removed. To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Collective dynamics of two-mode stochastic oscillators
We study a system of two-mode stochastic oscillators coupled through their
collective output. As a function of a relevant parameter four qualitatively
distinct regimes of collective behavior are observed. In an extended region of
the parameter space the periodicity of the collective output is enhanced by the
considered coupling. This system can be used as a new model to describe
synchronization-like phenomena in systems of units with two or more oscillation
modes. The model can also explain how periodic dynamics can be generated by
coupling largely stochastic units. Similar systems could be responsible for the
emergence of rhythmic behavior in complex biological or sociological systems.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 5 figure
Simple model for 1/f noise
We present a simple stochastic mechanism which generates pulse trains
exhibiting a power law distribution of the pulse intervals and a
power spectrum over several decades at low frequencies with close to
one. The essential ingredient of our model is a fluctuating threshold which
performs a Brownian motion. Whenever an increasing potential hits the
threshold, is reset to the origin and a pulse is emitted. We show that
if increases linearly in time, the pulse intervals can be approximated
by a random walk with multiplicative noise. Our model agrees with recent
experiments in neurobiology and explains the high interpulse interval
variability and the occurrence of noise observed in cortical
neurons and earthquake data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
1083 nm single frequency ytterbium doped fiber laser
Single frequency 1083 nm ytterbium fiber laser was demonstrated by introducing loop mirror filter and polarization controller in linear laser cavity. The loop mirror with unpumped ytterbium fiber as a narrow bandwidth filter discriminated and selected laser longitudinal modes efficiently. Spatial hole burning effect was restrained by adjusting polarization controller appropriately. The laser linewidth was about 2 KHz. Output power up to 14 mW were obtained under the launched pump power of 100 mW at 976 nm, the corresponding optical-optical conversion efficiency was 14%, the slope efficiency was 18%a. The measurement of RIN and power stability indicated the stable operation of the laser
