Schwann cell to axon transfer of ribosomes: toward a novel understanding of the role of glia in the nervous system
Schwann cells play pivotal roles in the development and maintenance of the peripheral nervous system. Here, we show that intact sciatic nerve axons of mice contain a small population of ribosomes, which increases by several orders of magnitude when axons are desomatized (severed from their cell bodies). We furthermore demonstrate, using the Wallerian degeneration slow mouse as a model, that Schwann cells transfer polyribosomes to desomatized axons. These data indicate that Schwann cells have the propensity to control axonal protein synthesis by supplying ribosomes on local basis. Copyright © 2008 Society for Neuroscience
The IIASA-LUC Project Georeferenced Database of the Former U.S.S.R., Volume 4: Vegetation
The IIASA/LUC georeferenced database for the former U.S.S.R. was created within the framework of the project "Modeling Land Use and Land Cover Changes in Europe and Northern Asia" (LUC). For Russia, essential information on relief, soil, vegetation, land cover and use, etc., for routine environmental analysis was lacking when the LUC project started developing the database. In addition, the environmental data on the former U.S.S.R. which were available, occurred in formats (papers, tables, etc.) that in general could not be used with modern information technology, and in particular in model building. In creating the LUC project database, we have established a threefold task: (1) to obtain the relevant information for the LUC project modeling exercises; (2) to develop data which is applicable to modem information technology; (3) to contribute a series of digital databases which could be applied for a number of other specific analyses by the national and international scientific community.
In defining the tasks it was agreed to create a set of digital databases which could be handled by geographic information systems (GIS). The full set of georeferenced digital databases was combined into the LUC project's GIS, using ARC/INFO. However, each individual item (physiography, soil, vegetation, etc.) was created as a separate digital database, allowing each item to be used independently, according to users' needs.

Retreatment of multiple failing maxillary implants after full arch rehabilitation:a retrospective, observational cohort study
The aim of this study was to assess implant retreatment in a group of patients whose maxillary implants were all failing after full arch rehabilitation. Treatment involved implant removal, augmentation, and placement of an overdenture supported by four to six implants. All consecutive patients referred between 2008 and 2018, following multiple late implant failures in the rehabilitated maxilla, were included in the study. Seventy implants in 15 patients were evaluated at 3.3 +/- 2.5 years (range 1.1-8.6 years) after loading. Implant survival, complications, clinical parameters, marginal bone loss, and patient-related outcome measures were recorded at the time of evaluation. Overall implant survival was 95.7%. Three implant failures occurred within the first year of function. Marginal bone loss was 0.32 +/- 0.46 mm; pocket probing depth was 4.55 +/- 1.59 mm. Plaque, calculus, inflammation, and bleeding were hardly seen (median index score 0). Patients scored their satisfaction with their overdentures as high (mean overall score 8.7 +/- 1.2, maximum 10). Chewing soft and tough food was scored as 'good' and hard food as 'moderate'. The mean Oral Health Impact Profile score was 29.5 +/- 33.3. It can be concluded that the replacement of multiple failing implants in an edentulous maxilla after bone augmentation is a safe and predictable treatment procedure when applied as an implant-supported overdenture
Harvesting anterior iliac crest or calvarial bone grafts to augment severely resorbed edentulous jaws:a systematic review and meta-analysis of patient-reported outcomes
The aim of this systematic review was to compare patient-reported outcomes after harvesting calvarial or anterior iliac crest bone grafts to repair severe jaw defects and enable implant placement. The MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, and OpenGrey were searched for studies on patient satisfaction, pain, disturbances in daily functioning, sensory alterations, donor site aesthetics, and complication rates. Of the 1946 articles identified, 43 reporting 40 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria; the studies were one randomized controlled clinical trial, one retrospective controlled clinical trial, and 23 prospective and 15 retrospective cohort studies. A meta-analysis of two studies (74 patients) showed no difference in satisfaction (mean difference (MD) − 0.13, 95% confidence interval (CI) − 1.17 to 0.92; P = 0.813) or postoperative pain (directly postoperative: MD −2.32, 95% CI −5.20 to 0.55, P = 0.113; late postoperative: MD −0.01, 95% CI −0.14 to 0.11, P = 0.825) between donor sites. However, the level of evidence is limited, due to the retrospective, non-randomized design of one study. Postoperative gait disturbances were highly prevalent among the anterior iliac crest patients (28–100% after 1 week). The incidence rates of sensory disturbances and other complications were low, and the donor site aesthetic outcomes were favourable for both graft types. To conclude, harvesting bone grafts from the calvarium or anterior iliac crest to augment the severely resorbed edentulous jaw results in similar patient satisfaction. However, the findings for postoperative pain and disturbances in daily living suggest a trend in favour of calvarial bone grafts if harvested using an adjusted technique
The Lymnaea Cardioexcitatory Peptide (LyCEP) Receptor: A G-Protein–Coupled Receptor for a Novel Member of the RFamide Neuropeptide Family
A novel G-protein–coupled receptor (GRL106) resembling neuropeptide Y and tachykinin receptors was cloned from the molluscLymnaea stagnalis. Application of a peptide extract from the Lymnaea brain to Xenopus oocytes expressing GRL106 activated a calcium-dependent chloride channel. Using this response as a bioassay, we purified the ligand for GRL106,Lymnaea cardioexcitatory peptide (LyCEP), an RFamide-type decapeptide (TPHWRPQGRF-NH2) displaying significant similarity to the Achatina cardioexcitatory peptide (ACEP-1) as well as to the recently identified family of mammalian prolactin-releasing peptides. In the Lymnaeabrain, the cells that produce egg-laying hormone are the predominant site of GRL106 gene expression and appear to be innervated by LyCEP-containing fibers. Indeed, LyCEP application transiently hyperpolarizes isolated egg-laying hormone cells. In theLymnaea pericardium, LyCEP-containing fibers end blindly at the pericardial lumen, and the heart is stimulated by LyCEPin vitro. These data confirm that LyCEP is an RFamide ligand for GRL10
