Quantum anisotropic Heisenberg chains with superlattice structure: a DMRG study
Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we study spin
superlattices composed of a repeated pattern of two spin-1/2 XXZ chains with
different anisotropy parameters. The magnetization curve can exhibit two
plateaus, a non trivial plateau with the magnetization value given by the
relative sizes of the sub-chains and another trivial plateau with zero
magnetization. We find good agreement of the value and the width of the
plateaus with the analytical results obtained previously. In the gapless
regions away from the plateaus, we compare the finite-size spin gap with the
predictions based on bosonization and find reasonable agreement. These results
confirm the validity of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid superlattice description

Low redshift constraints on energy-momentum-powered gravity models
There has been recent interest in the cosmological consequences of
energy-momentum-powered gravity models, in which the matter side of Einstein's
equations is modified by the addition of a term proportional to some power,
, of the energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the canonical linear term.
In this work we treat these models as phenomenological extensions of the
standard CDM, containing both matter and a cosmological constant. We
also quantitatively constrain the additional model parameters using low
redshift background cosmology data that are specifically from Type Ia
supernovas and Hubble parameter measurements. We start by studying specific
cases of these models with fixed values of which lead to an analytic
expression for the Friedmann equation; we discuss both their current
constraints and how the models may be further constrained by future
observations of Type Ia supernovas for WFIRST complemented by measurements of
the redshift drift by the ELT. We then consider and constrain a more extended
parameter space, allowing to be a free parameter and considering scenarios
with and without a cosmological constant. These models do not solve the
cosmological constant problem per se. Nonetheless these models can
phenomenologically lead to a recent accelerating universe without a
cosmological constant at the cost of having a preferred matter density of
around instead of the usual . Finally we
also briefly constrain scenarios without a cosmological constant, where the
single component has a constant equation of state which needs not be that of
matter; we provide an illustrative comparison of this model with a more

On positive solutions and the Omega limit set for a class of delay differential equations
This paper studies the positive solutions of a class of delay differential
equations with two delays. These equations originate from the modeling of
hematopoietic cell populations. We give a sufficient condition on the initial
function for such that the solution is positive for all time .
The condition is "optimal". We also discuss the long time behavior of these
positive solutions through a dynamical system on the space of continuous
functions. We give a characteristic description of the limit set of
this dynamical system, which can provide informations about the long time
behavior of positive solutions of the delay differential equation.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Two-branes with variable tension model and the effective Newtonian constant
It is shown that, in the two brane time variation model framework, if the
hidden brane tension varies according to the phenomenological Eotvos law, the
visible brane tension behavior is such that its time derivative is negative in
the past and positive after a specific time of cosmological evolution. This
behavior is interpreted in terms of an useful mechanical system analog and its
relation with the variation of the Newtonian (effective) gravitational
