    Agronomic characteristics of the spring forms of the wheat landraces (einkorn, emmer, spelt, intermediate bread wheat) grown in organic farming

    Organic farmers look to the possibilities of growing neglected crops, such as the spring forms of hulled wheat – einkorn, emmer and spelt – for support in developing the organic farming system. In 2008, 169 landraces from the gene bank at the Crop Research Institute in Prague were tested on certifi ed organic plots. The experiment was aimed at fi nding suitable varieties for the organic farming system. In summary, our fi ndings show that einkorn (Triticum monococcum L.) and emmer wheat [Triticum dicoccum Schrank (Schuebl)] are resistant to powdery mildew and brown rust, spelt wheat (Triticum spelta L.) is less resistant to these two diseases, and the intermediate forms of bread wheat are very sensitive to such infestation. The varieties evaluated incline to lodging, as they have long and weak stems. Einkorn and emmer wheat have short and dense spikes and a low thousand grains weight, whereas spelt wheat has long and lax spikes. The level of the harvest index is low. Potentially useful varieties were found during the fi eld experiment and evaluation, and our future efforts will therefore focus on improving resistance to lodging and increasing the productivity of the spike

    Impact of poroelastic effects on the inversion of fracture properties from amplitude variation with offset and azimuth data in horizontal transversely isotropic media

    <jats:p> The identification and characterization of fractures is an important objective in many areas of earth and environmental sciences. Amplitude variation with offset and azimuth (AVOAz) analysis of seismic reflection data is a key method for achieving these tasks. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the presence of pore fluids together with the strong mechanical contrast between the fractures and their embedding background give rise to wave-induced fluid flow (WIFF) effects. This implies that the effective stiffness tensor of a fluid-saturated fractured rock defining its seismic response becomes viscoelastic and frequency-dependent. In spite of this, AVOAz analysis typically relies on end-member-type elastic stiffness models that either assume a relaxed (i.e., equilibrated) or unrelaxed (i.e., unequilibrated) state of the wave-induced fluid pressure in the rock. In general, however, neither the appropriateness of the chosen model nor the associated errors in the inversion process are known. To investigate this topic, we have considered a poroelastic medium containing parallel vertical fractures and generate synthetic seismic AVOAz data using the classic Rüger approximations for PP-wave reflection coefficients in horizontally transversely isotropic media. A Markov chain Monte Carlo method is used to perform a Bayesian inversion of the synthetic seismic AVOAz data. We quantify the influence of WIFF effects on the AVOAz inversion results when elastic relaxed and unrelaxed models are used as forward solvers of inversion schemes to estimate the fracture volume fraction, the elastic moduli, and the porosity of the background rock, as well as the overall weakness of the medium due to the presence of fractures. Our results indicate that, when dealing with single-frequency data, relaxed elastic models provide biased but overall better inversion results than unrelaxed ones, for which some fracture parameters cannot be resolved. Improved inversion performance is achieved when using frequency-dependent data, which illustrates the importance of accounting for poroelastic effects. </jats:p&gt

    Abstract: This paper discusses scaling issues of a mobile multimedia tour guide. Making tourist-information available in a substantially large geographical area (e.g. a federal state in Austria) raises new questions, compared to providing similar information in a limited area (such as a museum). First, we have to assume a heterogeneous network infrastructure containing high and low bandwidth links and even total network loss. Video streaming is therefore not possible at any place. Secondly, the total amount of data grows linearly to the number of Points of Interest (POIs) which are augmented by the tour guide. Therefore, a preloading of all data onto a device with limited storage is not possible. A possible solution to these problems is hoarding, i.e. preloading an "appropriate" subset of data.     The strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes are analyzed on the basis of the measurements of J/psi, psi(2S) -> 1-0- in e+e- experiments. The currently available experimental information is revised with inclusion of the contribution from e+e- -> gamma * -> 1-0- . The study shows that a large phase around minus 90 degree between the strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes could not be ruled out by the experimental data for psi(2S).Comment: 4 page

    The carbonic anhydrase of Clostridium autoethanogenum represents a new subclass of β-carbonic anhydrases

    Carbonic anhydrase catalyses the interconversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate and protons. It was unknown if the industrial relevant acetogen Clostridium autoethanogenum possesses these enzymes. We identified two putative carbonic anhydrase genes in its genome, one of the β class and one of the γ class. Carbonic anhydrase activity was found for the purified β class enzyme, but not the γ class candidate. Functional complementation of an Escherichia coli carbonic anhydrase knock-out mutant showed that the β class carbonic anhydrase could complement this activity, but not the γ class candidate gene. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the β class carbonic anhydrase of Clostridium autoethanogenum represents a novel sub-class of β class carbonic anhydrases that form the F-clade. The members of this clade have the shortest primary structure of any known carbonic anhydrase

    Ratio of Hadronic Decay Rates of J\psi and \psi(2S) and the \rho\pi Puzzle

    The so-called \rho\pi puzzle of J\psi and \psi(2S) decays is examined using the experimental data available to date. Two different approaches were taken to estimate the ratio of J\psi and \psi(2S) hadronic decay rates. While one of the estimates could not yield the exact ratio of \psi(2S) to J\psi inclusive hadronic decay rates, the other, based on a computation of the inclusive ggg decay rate for \psi(2S) (J\psi) by subtracting other decay rates from the total decay rate, differs by two standard deviations from the naive prediction of perturbative QCD, even though its central value is nearly twice as large as what was naively expected. A comparison between this ratio, upon making corrections for specific exclusive two-body decay modes, and the corresponding experimental data confirms the puzzles in J\psi and \psi(2S) decays. We find from our analysis that the exclusively reconstructed hadronic decays of the \psi(2S) account for only a small fraction of its total decays, and a ratio exceeding the above estimate should be expected to occur for a considerable number of the remaining decay channels. We also show that the recent new results from the BES experiment provide crucial tests of various theoretical models proposed to explain the puzzle.Comment: 8 pages, no figure, 4 table

    Hadroproduction and Polarization of Charmonium

    In the limit of heavy quark mass, the production cross section and polarization of quarkonia can be calculated in perturbative QCD. We study the pp_\perp-averaged production of charmonium states in πN\pi N collisions at fixed target energies. The data on the relative production rates of \jp and χJ\chi_J is found to disagree with leading twist QCD. The polarization of the \jp indicates that the discrepancy is not due to poorly known parton distributions nor to the size of higher order effects (KK-factors). Rather, the disagreement suggests important higher twist corrections, as has been surmised earlier from the nuclear target AA-dependence of the production cross section.Comment: 19 page
