Rate Coefficients for Reactions of Ethynyl Radical (C2H) With HCN and CH3CN: Implications for the Formation of Comples Nitriles on Titan
Rate coefficients for the reactions of C2H + HCN yields products and C2H + CH3CN yields products have been measured over the temperature range 262-360 K. These experiments represent an ongoing effort to accurately measure reaction rate coefficients of the ethynyl radical, C2H, relevant to planetary atmospheres such as those of Jupiter and Saturn and its satellite Titan. Laser photolysis of C2H2 is used to produce C2H, and transient infrared laser absorption is employed to measure the decay of C2H to obtain the subsequent reaction rates in a transverse flow cell. Rate constants for the reaction C2H + HCN yields products are found to increase significantly with increasing temperature and are measured to be (3.9-6.2) x 10(exp 13) cm(exp 3) molecules(exp -1) s(exp -1) over the temperature range of 297-360 K. The rate constants for the reaction C2H + CH3CN yields products are also found to increase substantially with increasing temperature and are measured to be (1.0-2.1) x 10(exp -12) cm(exp 3) molecules(exp -1) s(exp -1) over the temperature range of 262-360 K. For the reaction C2H + HCN yields products, ab initio calculations of transition state structures are used to infer that the major products form via an addition/elimination pathway. The measured rate constants for the reaction of C2H + HCN yields products are significantly smaller than values currently employed in photochemical models of Titan, which will affect the HC3N distribution
The business case for women leaders: Meta-analysis, research critique, and path forward
Since the 1990s, a growing body of research has sought to quantify the relationship between womenâs representation in leadership positions and organizational financial performance. Commonly known as the âbusiness caseâ for womenâs leadership, the idea is that having more women leaders is good for business. Through meta-analysis ( k = 78, n = 117,639 organizations) of the direct effects of womenâs representation in leadership (as CEOs, on top management teams, and on boards of directors) on financial performance, and tests that proxy theoretical arguments for moderated relationships, we call attention to equivocal findings. Our results suggest womenâs leadership may affect firm performance in general and sales performance in particular. And womenâs leadershipâoverall and, specifically, the presence of a female CEOâis more likely to positively relate to firmsâ financial performance in more gender egalitarian cultures. Yet taking our findings as a whole, we argue that commonly used methods of testing the business case for women leaders may limit our ability as scholars to understand the value that women bring to leadership positions. We do not advocate that the business case be abandoned altogether but, rather, improved and refined. We name exemplary research studies to show how different perspectives on gender, alternative conceptualizations of value, and the specification of underlying mechanisms linking leadership to performance can generate changes in both the dominant ontology and the epistemology underlying this body of research.</jats:p

Women's managerial aspirations : an organizational development perspective
Some authors have explained the dearth of women leaders as an âopt-out revolutionââthat
women today are making a choice not to aspire to leadership positions. The authors of this
article present a model that tests managersâ biased evaluations of women as less career motivated
as an explanation for why women have lower managerial aspirations than men. Specifically,
they hypothesize that day-to-day managerial decisions involving allocating challenging
work, training and development, and career encouragement mean women accrue less organizational
development, and this is one explanation for their lower managerial aspirations. The
authorsâ model is based on social role theory and is examined in a sample of 112 supervisorâ
subordinate dyads at a U.S. Fortune 500 firm.http://jom.sagepub.com/hb201
Drift Observations and Mitigation in LCLS-II RF
The LCLS-II RF system physically spans ~700m and has strict requirements --
on the order of 20 fs -- on the phase stability of the accelerating RF fields
in its SRF linac. While each LLRF rack is crudely temperature-stabilized, the
weather inside the service building as a whole is usually compared to a tin
shack in the California sun. A phase-averaging reference line is the primary
system deployed in support of the phase stability goals. There are other,
secondary subsystems (SEL phase offset, and determination of cavity detuning)
that are also sensitive to RF phase drift. We present measurements of phase
shifts observed in the overall RF system, and how diagnostics are able to sense
and correct for them during beam operations.Comment: Talk presented at LLRF Workshop 2023 (LLRF2023, arXiv: 2310.03199
Synthesis, Molecular Structure, and 1H NMR Analysis of Bis(tetraphenylcyclopentadienyl)ruthenium(II)
Reaction of [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 with K(η5-C5HPh4) in refluxing diglyme yields (η5-C5Ph4)2Ru in ca 50% yield. The complex was not susceptible to oxidation or reduction. (C5HPH4)2Ru crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group with a = 8.549(4), b = 10.793(4), c = 12.842(5) Ă
, α = 65.98(3), ÎČ = 73.10(3), Îł = 83.49(3)° and Z = 1. The least-squares data refined to R(F) = 3.53% and R(wF = 3.82% for the 3952 independent observed reflections with Fo â„ 5Ï(Fo). The metal-centroid distance is 1.832(2) Ă
and all other bond lengths and angles are similar to other octaphenylmetallocenes. 1H NMR analysis employing 2D J-resolved, COSY and low temperature techniques allowed assignment of all protons in the molecule. The motional processes of the phenyl groups are discussed
Gender differences in pay levels : an examination of the compensation of university presidents
Our paper studies how gender and organizational status affect a university presidentâs compensation. Similar to previous findings, we hypothesize that women will receive less pay than men. However, we go beyond a dyadic view of individual differences to examine genderâs impact on compensation, and we explicate the importance of institutional forces in understanding the gender pay gap. In doing so, we rely on organizational status and hypothesize that the gender pay gap will be less pronounced as a universityâs status rises. Although we find that the gender pay gap persists within the university president context, we also find that as a universityâs status rises, the pay gap declines. Moreover, our findings show that the gender pay gap disappears at higher-status universities. Hence, accounting for where the glass ceiling is broken is an important consideration in understanding the gender pay gap. In sum, by integrating a broader institutional perspective to explain gender differences in pay levels, our paper demonstrates the importance of contextualizing gender to better understand its effects on compensation.https://pubsonline.informs.org/journal/orschj2019Human Resource Managemen
A study of hypertension in twins
A study of the blood pressure of 86 pairs of like-sexed twins over age 40 selected at random was performed. Twelve per cent were found to have a diastolic blood pressure in excess of 94 mm. Hg. In 4 out of 5 identical twin sets both members were found to have hypertension of about equal magnitude. In the fifth set, the predetermined definition of diastolic hypertension was not met in one member of the pair, although the systolic blood pressure was clearly elevated. In two identical twin sets, where information concerning previous blood pressure could be obtained, the age of onset of the hypertension differed. Among the 49 dizygetic twin sets, diastolic hypertension was found in 15 per cent of the individuals. In 3 of 12 of these pairs, it was present in both members.Since the prevalence of hypertension after age 40 in the identical twin sample resembles that in the population at large, it is concluded that the ultimate development of this condition is heavily dependent on genetic influences.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32777/1/0000150.pd
