    Improving Agricultural Irrigation on the Balkhab River, Afghanistan

    In Afghanistan, where 80% of the population is rural, irrigated agriculture is important for satisfying subsistence needs. While most of the irrigated agriculture is fed by diversion canal systems which tap surface flows, legal and physical water infrastructure in the region is generally poor. A math programming model is used to optimize irrigation strategies under different water-availability and policy scenarios. It is found that the construction of a reservoir could increase net revenues to a representative farming community by up to 30%. However, even greater benefits may result from increasing distribution efficiencies, depending on the initial level of conveyance losses. Further, property rights schemes may be implemented to distribute wealth more evenly through various zones at minimal cost to the agricultural community as a whole.     Recovery in cognitive motor dissociation after severe brain injury: A cohort study.

    To investigate the functional and cognitive outcomes during early intensive neurorehabilitation and to compare the recovery patterns of patients presenting with cognitive motor dissociation (CMD), disorders of consciousness (DOC) and non-DOC. We conducted a single center observational cohort study of 141 patients with severe acquired brain injury, consecutively admitted to an acute neurorehabilitation unit. We divided patients into three groups according to initial neurobehavioral diagnosis at admission using the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) and the Motor Behavior Tool (MBT): potential clinical CMD, [N = 105]; DOC [N = 19]; non-DOC [N = 17]). Functional and cognitive outcomes were assessed at admission and discharge using the Glasgow Outcome Scale, the Early Rehabilitation Barthel Index, the Disability Rating Scale, the Rancho Los Amigos Levels of Cognitive Functioning, the Functional Ambulation Classification Scale and the modified Rankin Scale. Confirmed recovery of conscious awareness was based on CRS-R criteria. CMD patients were significantly associated with better functional outcomes and potential for improvement than DOC. Furthermore, outcomes of CMD patients did not differ significantly from those of non-DOC. Using the CRS-R scale only; approximatively 30% of CMD patients did not recover consciousness at discharge. Our findings support the fact that patients presenting with CMD condition constitute a separate category, with different potential for improvement and functional outcomes than patients suffering from DOC. This reinforces the need for CMD to be urgently recognized, as it may directly affect patient care, influencing life-or-death decisions

    Corrosion of One-Step Superhydrophobic Stainless-Steel Thermal Spray Coatings

    As most superhydrophobic coatings are made of soft materials, the need for harder, more robust films is evident in applications where erosional degradation is of concern. The work herein describes a methodology to produce superhydrophobic stainless-steel thermal spray coatings using the high-velocity oxygen fuel technique. Due to the use of a kerosene fuel source, a carbon-rich film is formed on the surface of the thermal spray coatings, lowering the surface energy of the high-energy metallic substrates. The thermal spray process generates a hierarchical micro-/sub-micro-structure that is needed to sustain superhydrophobicity. The effect of spray parameters such as particle velocity and temperature on the coatingā€™s hydrophobicity state was explored, and a high particle velocity was shown to cause superhydrophobic characteristics. The coatings were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, static water contact angle measurements, water droplet roll-off measurements, and water droplet bouncing tests. The corrosion behavior of the coatings was studied using potentiodynamic polarization measurements in order to correlate water repellency with corrosion resistance; however, all coatings demonstrated active corrosion without passivation. This study describes an interesting phenomenon where superhydrophobicity does not guarantee corrosion resistance and discusses alternative applications for such materials

    Correlation of Tissue Eosinophils with Prognosis in Head and Neck Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The skin squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is the second most common skin cancer. The correlation between severe tissue eosinophilia with optimal and undesirable prognosis, or even an ineffectiveness effect was related. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between tissue eosinophilia and prognosis in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 33 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the pathology department of Shahid Beheshti hospital of University of Babol University of Medical Sciences (age, sex, tumor site) were collected and histopathologic in the vascular and nervous invasions was studied. Numbers of eosinophils (eos.) were counted in 15 successive fields at invasive fronts of HNCSCCs (area of 15 fields=1.2mm2) atƗ400 magnification with optical microscope. The correlation between the mean number of eosinophils per MmĀ² and the severity of eosinophilia (mild and severe) and clinical-histopathologic factors was analyzed. FINDINGS: Mean eos/mm2 was 99.1913Ā±104.39897. Overall survival rate, disease-specific survival rate and disease-free survival rate were %72.72, %61.53% and %84.84, respectively. There was inverse significant correlation between disease-free survival with eos/mm2 (p=0.043). There were no significant correlation between other clinical-histopathologic factors with mean eos/ mm2.There were inverse significant correlations between 5-year overall survival rate and 5-year disease-free survival rate with severity of tissue eosinophilia (p=0.02 and 0.013 respectively).There were not significant correlations between 5-year disease-specific survival and other factors with severity of tissue eosinophilia. CONCLUSION: There was inverse correlation between severity of tissue eosinophilia with survival

    The notion of distinct ā€˜publicā€™ and ā€˜privateā€™ spheres underpins much normative and practical engagement with political misconduct. What is less clear is whether citizens draw distinctions between misdemeanours in the ā€˜publicā€™ and ā€˜privateā€™ spheres, and whether they judge these in systematically different ways. This paper explores attitudes to political misconduct in France. French citizens are often said to be particularly relaxed about politiciansā€™ private affairs, but there has been little empirical evidence for this proposition. Drawing on original survey data, this paper demonstrates clearly that French citizens draw a sharp distinction between politiciansā€™ public and private transgressions, and are more tolerant of the latter

    Glycaemic control and hypoglycaemia benefits with insulin glargine 300 U/mL extend to people with type 2 diabetes and mild-to-moderate renal impairment

    Aim: To investigate the impact of renal function on the safety and efficacy of insulin glargine 300 U/mL (Gla-300) and insulin glargine 100 U/mL (Gla-100). Materials and Methods: A meta-analysis was performed using pooled 6-month data from the EDITION 1, 2 and 3 trials (N = 2496). Eligible participants, aged ā‰„18 years with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), were randomized to receive once-daily evening injections of Gla-300 or Gla-100. Pooled results were assessed by two renal function subgroups: estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 and ā‰„60 mL/min/1.73 m2 . Results: The decrease in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) after 6 months and the proportion of individuals with T2DM achieving HbA1c targets were similar in the Gla-300 and Gla-100 groups, for both renal function subgroups. There was a reduced risk of nocturnal (12:00-5:59 AM) confirmed (ā‰¤3.9 mmol/L [ā‰¤70 mg/dL]) or severe hypoglycaemia with Gla-300 in both renal function subgroups (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 : relative risk [RR] 0.76 [95% confidence interval {CI} 0.62-0.94] and eGFR ā‰„60 mL/min/1.73 m2 : RR 0.75 [95% CI 0.67-0.85]). For confirmed (ā‰¤70 mg/dL [ā‰¤3.9 mmol/L]) or severe hypoglycaemia at any time of day (24 hours) the hypoglycaemia risk was lower with Gla-300 vs Gla-100 in both the lower (RR 0.94 [95% CI 0.86-1.03]) and higher (RR 0.90 [95% CI 0.85-0.95]) eGFR subgroups. Conclusions: Gla-300 provided similar glycaemic control to Gla-100, while indicating a reduced overall risk of confirmed (ā‰¤3.9 and <3.0 mmol/L [ā‰¤70 and <54 mg/dL]) or severe hypoglycaemia, with no significant difference between renal function subgroups

    Development of selection indices for improvement of seed yield and lipid composition in bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (l.) verdc.)

    The underutilised grain legume bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea) has the potential to contribute significantly to nutritional security. However, the lack of commercial cultivars has hindered its wider adoption and utilisation as a food source. The development of competitive cultivars is impeded by (1) lack of systematic data describing variation in nutritional composition within the gene pool, and (2) a poor understanding of how concentrations of different nutritional components interact. In this study, we analysed seed lipid and protein concentration and lipid composition within a collection of 100 lines representing the global gene pool. Seed protein and lipid varied over twofold with a normal distribution, but no significant statistical correlation was detected between the two components. Seed lipid concentration (4.2ā€“8.8 g/100 g) is primarily determined by the proportion of oleic acid (r2 = 0.45). Yield and composition data for a subset of 40 lines were then used to test selection parameters for high yielding, high lipid breeding lines. From five selection indices tested using 15 scenarios, an index based on the seed number, seed weight, and oleic acid yielded a >50% expected increase in each of the mean values of seed number, pod dry weight, seed dry weight, and seed size, as well as an expected 7% increase in seed lipid concentration
