The ambivalent shadow of the pre-Wilsonian rise of international law
The generation of American international lawyers who founded the American Society of International Law in 1906 and nurtured the soil for what has been retrospectively called a “moralistic legalistic approach to international relations” remains little studied. A survey of the rise of international legal literature in the U.S. from the mid-19th century to the eve of the Great War serves as a backdrop to the examination of the boosting effect on international law of the Spanish American War in 1898. An examination of the Insular Cases before the US Supreme Court is then accompanied by the analysis of a number of influential factors behind the pre-war rise of international law in the U.S. The work concludes with an examination of the rise of natural law doctrines in international law during the interwar period and the critiques addressed.by the realist founders of the field of “international relations” to the “moralistic legalistic approach to international relation
One-loop Beta Functions for the Orientable Non-commutative Gross-Neveu Model
We compute at the one-loop order the beta-functions for a renormalisable
non-commutative analog of the Gross Neveu model defined on the Moyal plane. The
calculation is performed within the so called x-space formalism. We find that
this non-commutative field theory exhibits asymptotic freedom for any number of
colors. The beta-function for the non-commutative counterpart of the Thirring
model is found to be non vanishing.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure
Langevin dynamics of the Lebowitz-Percus model
We revisit the hard-spheres lattice gas model in the spherical approximation
proposed by Lebowitz and Percus (J. L. Lebowitz, J. K. Percus, Phys. Rev.{\
144} (1966) 251). Although no disorder is present in the model, we find that
the short-range dynamical restrictions in the model induce glassy behavior. We
examine the off-equilibrium Langevin dynamics of this model and study the
relaxation of the density as well as the correlation, response and overlap
two-time functions. We find that the relaxation proceeds in two steps as well
as absence of anomaly in the response function. By studying the violation of
the fluctuation-dissipation ratio we conclude that the glassy scenario of this
model corresponds to the dynamics of domain growth in phase ordering kinetics.Comment: 21 pages, RevTeX, 14 PS figure
Response properties in a model for granular matter
We investigate the response properties of granular media in the framework of
the so-called {\em Random Tetris Model}. We monitor, for different driving
procedures, several quantities: the evolution of the density and of the density
profiles, the ageing properties through the two-times correlation functions and
the two-times mean-square distance between the potential energies, the response
function defined in terms of the difference in the potential energies of two
replica driven in two slightly different ways. We focus in particular on the
role played by the spatial inhomogeneities (structures) spontaneously emerging
during the compaction process, the history of the sample and the driving
procedure. It turns out that none of these ingredients can be neglected for the
correct interpretation of the experimental or numerical data. We discuss the
problem of the optimization of the compaction process and we comment on the
validity of our results for the description of granular materials in a

Understanding of the Renormalization Program in a mathematically Rigorous Framework and an Intrinsic Mass Scale
we show there exists a mathematically consistent framework in which the
Renormalization Program can be understood in a natural manner. The framework
does not require any violations of mathematical rigor usually associated with
the Renormalization program. We use the framework of the non-local field
theories [these carry a finite mass scale (\Lambda)]and set up a finite
perturbative program. We show how this program leads to the perturbation series
of the usual renormalization program [except one difference] if the series is
restructured .We further show that the comparison becomes possible if there
exists a finite mass scale (\Lambda), with certain properties, in the Quantum
Field theory [which we take to be the scale present in the nonlocal theory]. We
give a way to estimate the scale (\Lambda). We also show that the finite
perturbation program differs from the usual renormalization program by a term;

Area spectra of the rotating BTZ black hole from quasinormal modes
Following Bekenstein's suggestion that the horizon area of a black hole
should be quantized, the discrete spectrum of the horizon area has been
investigated in various ways. By considering the quasinormal mode of a black
hole, we obtain the transition frequency of the black hole, analogous to the
case of a hydrogen atom, in the semiclassical limit. According to Bohr's
correspondence principle, this transition frequency at large quantum number is
equal to classical oscillation frequency. For the corresponding classical
system of periodic motion with this oscillation frequency, an action variable
is identified and quantized via Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization, from which the
quantized spectrum of the horizon area is obtained. This method can be applied
for black holes with discrete quasinormal modes. As an example, we apply the
method for the both non-rotating and rotating BTZ black holes and obtain that
the spectrum of the horizon area is equally spaced and independent of the
cosmological constant for both cases
Analog of Magnetoelectric Effect in High-Tc Granular Superconductors
We propose the existence of an electric-field induced nonlinear magnetization
in a weakly coupled granular superconductor due to time-parity violation. As
the field increases the induced magnetization passes from para- to dia-magnetic
behavior. We discuss conditions under which this effect could be experimentally
