    From vortex molecules to the Abrikosov lattice in thin mesoscopic superconducting disks

    Stable vortex states are studied in large superconducting thin disks (for numerical purposes we considered with radius R = 50 \xi). Configurations containing more than 700 vortices were obtained using two different approaches: the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and the London approximation. To obtain better agreement with results from the GL theory we generalized the London theory by including the spatial variation of the order parameter following Clem's ansatz. We find that configurations calculated in the London limit are also stable within the Ginzburg-Landau theory for up to ~ 230 vortices. For large values of the vorticity (typically, L > 100), the vortices are arranged in an Abrikosov lattice in the center of the disk, which is surrounded by at least two circular shells of vortices. A Voronoi construction is used to identify the defects present in the ground state vortex configurations. Such defects cluster near the edge of the disk, but for large L also grain boundaries are found which extend up to the center of the disk.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, RevTex4, submitted to Phys.     Twenty-eight Holstein calves were blocked by birth date and randomly assigned to one of two treatments to investigate the effect of colostrum replacer (CR) feeding regimen on plasma volume (PV). Treatments were: 1) one feeding of CR (C1; 3L of reconstituted CR 675 g of powder providing 184.5 g of IgG at birth) or 2) two feedings of CR (C2; 2L of reconstituted CR at birth and 1 L of reconstituted CR at six h). By 6 h of age, all calves had received 3L of CR providing 184.5 g of IgG. Plasma volume was estimated at six, 12, 18, and 24 h after birth using Evans blue dye (EBD). No treatment effects were noted at any time points (P \u3e 0.05). Mean PV for all calves regardless of treatment at six, 12, 18, and 24 h were 78.6, 89.2, 83.9, and 90.7 mL kg-1 of BW, respectively. Plasma volume was correlated with hematocrit (HCT), initial HCT, and treatment. Hematocrit was correlated with PV, initial HCT, and body weight. Hematocrit for six, 12, 18 and 24 h after birth can be predicted with an initial precolostral HCT determination

    Vacuum Polarization by a Magnetic Flux Tube at Finite Temperature in the Cosmic String Spacetime

    In this paper we analyse the effect produced by the temperature in the vacuum polarization associated with charged massless scalar field in the presence of magnetic flux tube in the cosmic string spacetime. Three different configurations of magnetic fields are taken into account: (i)(i) a homogeneous field inside the tube, (ii)(ii) a field proportional to 1/r1/r and (iii)(iii) a cylindrical shell with δ\delta-function. In these three cases, the axis of the infinitely long tube of radius RR coincides with the cosmic string. Because the complexity of this analysis in the region inside the tube, we consider the thermal effect in the region outside. In order to develop this analysis, we construct the thermal Green function associated with this system for the three above mentioned situations considering points in the region outside the tube. We explicitly calculate in the high-temperature limit, the thermal average of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur

    A semiquantitative approach to the impurity-band-related transport properties of GaMnAs nanolayers

    We investigate the spin-polarized transport of GaMnAs nanolayers in which a ferromagnetic order exists below a certain transition temperature. Our calculation for the self-averaged resistivity takes into account the existence of an impurity band determining the extended ("metallic" transport) or localized (hopping by thermal excitation) nature of the states at and near the Fermi level. Magnetic order and resistivity are inter-related due to the influence of the spin polarization of the impurity band and the effect of the Zeeman splitting on the mobility edge. We obtain, for a given range of Mn concentration and carrier density, a "metallic" behavior in which the transport by extended carriers dominates at low temperature, and is dominated by the thermally excited localized carriers near and above the transition temperature. This gives rise to a conspicuous hump of the resistivity which has been experimentally observed and brings light onto the relationship between transport and magnetic properties of this material

    Tightening the belt: Constraining the mass and evolution in SDC335

    Recent ALMA observations identified one of the most massive star-forming cores yet observed in the Milky Way; SDC335-MM1, within the infrared dark cloud SDC335.579-0.292. Along with an accompanying core MM2, SDC335 appears to be in the early stages of its star formation process. In this paper we aim to constrain the properties of the stars forming within these two massive millimetre sources. Observations of SDC335 at 6, 8, 23 and 25GHz were made with the ATCA. We report the results of these continuum measurements, which combined with archival data, allow us to build and analyse the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the compact sources in SDC335. Three HCHII regions within SDC335 are identified, two within the MM1 core. For each HCHII region, a free-free emission curve is fit to the data allowing the derivation of the sources' emission measure, ionising photon flux and electron density. Using these physical properties we assign each HCHII region a ZAMS spectral type, finding two protostars with characteristics of spectral type B1.5 and one with a lower limit of B1-B1.5. Ancillary data from infrared to mm wavelength are used to construct free-free component subtracted SEDs for the mm-cores, allowing calculation of the bolometric luminosities and revision of the previous gas mass estimates. The measured luminosities for the two mm-cores are lower than expected from accreting sources displaying characteristics of the ZAMS spectral type assigned to them. The protostars are still actively accreting, suggesting that a mechanism is limiting the accretion luminosity, we present the case for two different mechanisms capable of causing this. Finally, using the ZAMS mass values as lower limit constraints, a final stellar population for SDC335 was synthesised finding SDC335 is likely to be in the process of forming a stellar cluster comparable to the Trapezium Cluster and NGC6334 I(N).Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.     Resumo: Esse trabalho é parte de um survey amplo sobre a produção de ovinos no Ceará, incluindo a análise das características gerais das propriedades, perfil dos produtores, infraestrutura e nível de capitalização, indicadores financeiros, aspectos comerciais e tecnologia de produção. O objeto geral desse artigo é a descrição da tecnologia de produção adotada no estado. Para cumprir o objetivo, realizou-se uma pesquisa classificada quanto aos objetivos como descritiva e quanto à natureza ou abordagem do problema como qualitativa e quantitativa. Quanto ao delineamento o estudo caracterizou-se por uma ampla pesquisa de campo em 170 propriedades produtoras de ovinos no estado do Ceará. Estatísticas descritivas foram usadas na análise dos dados, com o uso do pacote estatístico SPSS, em especial o cálculo de médias e freqüências. Estes cálculos permitiram observar que o sistema de produção dominante é caracterizado por baixo nível geral tecnológico em todas as áreas ? manejo, alimentação, reprodução e sanidade. Abstract: The work is part of an extensive survey about sheep production in the Ceará state of Brazil. The general objective of this paper is to describe the prevalent production technology in farms sheep in this state. This objective was achieved through a survey of 170 sheep farmers.
