Pulsation in carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs: A new chapter in white dwarf asteroseismology
We present some of the results of a survey aimed at exploring the
asteroseismological potential of the newly-discovered carbon-atmosphere white
dwarfs. We show that, in certains regions of parameter space, carbon-atmosphere
white dwarfs may drive low-order gravity modes. We demonstrate that our
theoretical results are consistent with the recent exciting discovery of
luminosity variations in SDSS J1426+5752 and some null results obtained by a
team of scientists at McDonald Observatory. We also present follow-up
photometric observations carried out by ourselves at the Mount Bigelow 1.6-m
telescope using the new Mont4K camera. The results of follow-up spectroscopic
observations at the MMT are also briefly reported, including the surprising
discovery that SDSS J1426+5752 is not only a pulsating star but that it is also
a magnetic white dwarf with a surface field near 1.2 MG. The discovery of
-mode pulsations in SDSS J1426+5752 is quite significant in itself as it
opens a fourth asteroseismological "window", after the GW Vir, V777 Her, and ZZ

The carbon abundance in two h 2 regions of the small Megallanic Cloud
Observations of the ultraviolet spectra of two locations in the H II region NGC 346 and of the entire H II region IC 1644 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) were made using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The abundance of carbon in the nebulae was derived using theoretical model analysis combined with ground-based spectrophotometry of other emission lines. The abundance of C relative to H in the SMC was found to be lower by -0.9 dex compared with the Sun and lower by -0.8 dex compared with the Orion Nebula. This C deficiency is similar to that of O, Ne, S, and Ar in the SMC, but not as great as found for N. The sites and history of C nucleosynthesis in galaxies is similar to that of O, Ne, S, and Ar, in contrast to that of N, which appears to be more complex, perhaps because of a mixture of secondary primary sources or a significant contribution from intermediate-mass long-lived stars
SDSS J142625.71+575218.3: the First Pulsating White Dwarf With A Large Detectable Magnetic Field
We report the discovery of a strong magnetic field in the unique pulsating carbon- atmosphere white dwarf SDSS J142625.71 + 575218.3. From spectra gathered at the MMT and Keck telescopes, we infer a surface field of B(s) similar or equal to 1.2 MG, based on obvious Zeeman components seen in several carbon lines. We also detect the presence of a Zeeman- splitted He I lambda 4471 line, which is an indicator of the presence of a nonnegligible amount of helium in the atmosphere of this "hot DQ" star. This is important for understanding its pulsations, as nonadabatic theory reveals that some helium must be present in the envelope mixture for pulsation modes to be excited in the range of effective temperature where the target star is found. Out of nearly 200 pulsating white dwarfs known today, this is the first example of a star with a large detectable magnetic field. We suggest that SDSS J142625.71 + 575218.3 is the white dwarf equivalent of a rapidly oscillating Ap star.NSERCNSF AST 03-07321Reardon FoundationAstronom

Precise Atmospheric Parameters for the Shortest Period Binary White Dwarfs: Gravitational Waves, Metals, and Pulsations
We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of 61 low mass white dwarfs and
provide precise atmospheric parameters, masses, and updated binary system
parameters based on our new model atmosphere grids and the most recent
evolutionary model calculations. For the first time, we measure systematic
abundances of He, Ca and Mg for metal-rich extremely low mass white dwarfs and
examine the distribution of these abundances as a function of effective
temperature and mass. Based on our preliminary results, we discuss the
possibility that shell flashes may be responsible for the presence of the
observed He and metals. We compare stellar radii derived from our spectroscopic
analysis to model-independent measurements and find good agreement except for
those white dwarfs with Teff < 10,000 K. We also calculate the expected
gravitational wave strain for each system and discuss their significance to the
eLISA space-borne gravitational wave observatory. Finally, we provide an update

Generalized Model of Resonant Polymer-Coated Microcantilevers in Viscous Liquid Media
Expressions describing the resonant frequency and quality factor of a dynamically driven, polymer-coated microcantilever in a viscous liquid medium have been obtained. These generalized formulas are used to describe the effects the operational medium and the viscoelastic coating have on the device sensitivity when used in liquid-phase chemical sensing applications. Shifts in the resonant frequency are normally assumed proportional to the mass of sorbed analyte in the sensing layer. However, the expression for the frequency shift derived in this work indicates that the frequency shift is also dependent on changes in the sensing layer’s loss and storage moduli, changes in the moment of inertia, and changes in the medium of operation’s viscosity and density. Not accounting for these factors will lead to incorrect analyte concentration predictions. The derived expressions are shown to reduce to well-known formulas found in the literature for the case of an uncoated cantilever in a viscous liquid medium and the case of a coated cantilever in air or in a vacuum. The theoretical results presented are then compared to available chemical sensor data in aqueous and viscous solutions
