ROSAT observations of two 'cooling flow' EMSS Galaxies
We present ROSAT observations of two luminous L~10^44 erg/s EMSS galaxies,
MS1019+5139 and MS1209+3917, previously classified as 'cooling flow' galaxies.
MS1019+5139 does not appear to be spatially extended (<13 kpc) while its
spectrum is well fit by a power law with Gamma = 1.73 +0.19-0.18; X-ray
variability on a timescale of ~ years is also clearly detected. MS1209+3917
shows no evidence of spatial extension (<50 kpc) but it shows variability,
while its spectrum can be fit with thermal bremsstrahlung emission (kT=1.8
+0.9-0.4 keV) or a power law model (Gamma = 2.50 +0.44-0.42, but with excess
photoelectric absorption above the Galactic value). All the above argue against
thermal emission from a group of galaxies or a galaxy but in favour of an AGN
(possibly BL Lac) interpretation. We conclude that no 'normal' galaxies with
high X-ray luminosities have yet been detected in the EMSS survey that could be

An Exploration of Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Association between Perfectionism and Disordered Eating in College Students
Perfectionism is a robust risk factor for eating disorders (EDs). Although individually-oriented dimensions of perfectionism are strongly related to eating pathology, less is known about the contribution of parent-oriented dimensions, specifically parental expectations (PE) and parental criticisms (PC). Further, few studies have investigated these effects within racially/ethnically diverse samples. However, PE and PC might be particularly relevant to eating pathology among certain cultural groups, such as those from collectivistic and interdependent societies. This study examined associations among PE, PC, and ED symptoms across racial/ethnic groups. Undergraduates (N=706; 74.8% Female; 48% White, 19.8% Black, 7.1% Latinx, 16% Asian, 9.1% multiracial) completed online surveys assessing perfectionism and ED symptoms. Multiple and logistic regressions examined the association between parent-oriented perfectionism, global eating pathology, loss-of-control (LOC) eating, purging behaviors, and ED risk status (EDE-Q global \u3c 4.0). Analyses were conducted by racial/ethnic group, controlling for gender. Both PE and PC were related to greater ED pathology in students identifying as White (pp=.03), Asian (p=.02), and multiracial (pp=.19). Higher PC was related to a greater likelihood of endorsing LOC eating in White (p=.004) and Black students (p=.05) and purging behaviors in White (p=.004), Asian (p=.04), and multiracial students (p=.03). Greater PC was also associated with ED risk in Asian (p=.03) and multiracial participants (p=.01). Findings indicate that the relations between specific aspects of parent-oriented perfectionism differ among cultural groups and are associated with ED symptoms in college students. PC seemed more relevant to ED pathology than did PE overall. Findings suggest that parent-oriented perfectionism, particularly PC, might be important to include in clinical assessment and treatment with students at-risk of EDs.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1039/thumbnail.jp

IUE observations of oxygen-rich supernova remnants
The IUE observations were used to determine the composition of the ejecta (especially C and Si abundances) and to test models for the ionization and excitation of the ejecta of two oxygen-rich supernova remnants (N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 1E 0102-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud). Time-dependent photoionization by the EUV and X-ray radiation from 1E 0102-7219 can qualitatively explain its UV and optical line emission, but the density and ionization structures are complex and prevent a unique model from being specified. Many model parameters are poorly constrained, including the time dependence and shape of the ionizing spectrum. Moreover, the models presented are not self-consistent in that the volumes and densities of the optically emitting gas imply optical depths of order unity in the EUV, but absorption of the ionizing radiation was ignored. It is possible that these shortcomings reflect a more fundamental limitation of the model assumptions. It is assumed that the electron velocity distribution is Maxwellian and that the energy deposited by photoionization heats the electrons directly. The 500 eV electrons produced by the Auger process may excite or ionize other ions before they slow down enough to share their energy with other electrons. Many of the excitations would produce photons that could ionize lower ionization stages

Tony Blair’s political instinct typically is to associate himself only with the future. As such, his explicit appeal to ‘the past’ in his references to New Labour’s desire to establish a “new Bretton Woods” is sufficient in itself to arouse some degree of analytical curiosity (see Blair 1998a). The fact that this appeal was made specifically in relation to Bretton Woods is even more interesting. The resonant image of the international economic context established by the original Bretton Woods agreements invokes a style and content of policy-making which Tony Blair typically dismisses as neither economically nor politically consistent with his preferred vision of the future (see Blair 2000c, 2001b)
The Infrared Massive Stellar Content of M83
We present an analysis of archival Spitzer images and new ground-based and
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) near-infrared (IR) and optical images of the field
of M83 with the goal of identifying rare, dusty, evolved massive stars. We
present point source catalogs consisting of 3778 objects from
Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) Band 1 (3.6 m) and Band 2 (4.5 m), and
975 objects identified in Magellan 6.5m FourStar near-IR and
images. A combined catalog of coordinate matched near- and mid-IR point sources
yields 221 objects in the field of M83. Using this photometry we identify 185
massive evolved stellar candidates based on their location in color-magnitude
and color-color diagrams. We estimate the background contamination to our
stellar candidate lists and further classify candidates based on their
appearance in Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of M83. We find 49
strong candidates for massive stars which are very promising objects for
spectroscopic follow-up. Based on their location in a versus
diagram, we expect at least 24, or roughly 50%, to be confirmed as red

Possible Detection of OVI from the LMC Superbubble N70
We present FUSE observations toward four stars in the LMC superbubble N70 and
compare these spectra to those of four comparison targets located in nearby
field and diffuse regions. The N70 sight lines show OVI 1032 absorption that is
consistently stronger than the comparison sight lines by ~60%. We attribute the
excess column density (logN_OVI=14.03 cm^-2) to hot gas within N70, potentially
the first detection of OVI associated with a superbubble. In a survey of 12 LMC
sight lines, Howk et al. (2002a) concluded that there was no correlation
between ISM morphology and N_OVI. We present a reanalysis of their measurements
combined with our own and find a clear difference between the superbubble and
field samples. The five superbubbles probed to date with FUSE show a
consistently higher mean N_OVI than the 12 non-superbubble sight lines, though
both samples show equivalent scatter from halo variability. Possible ionization
mechanisms for N70 are discussed, and we conclude that the observed OVI could
be the product of thermal conduction at the interface between the hot, X-ray
emitting gas inside the superbubble and the cooler, photoionized material
making up the shell seen prominently in Halpha. We calculate the total hydrogen
density n_H implied by our OVI measurements and find a value consistent with

The pre-shock gas of SN1006 from HST/ACS observations
We derive the pre-shock density and scale length along the line of sight for
the collisionless shock from a deep HST image that resolves the H alpha
filament in SN1006 and updated model calculations. The very deep ACS
high-resolution image of the Balmer line filament in the northwest (NW)
quadrant shows that 0.25 < n_0 < le$ 0.4 cm-3 and that the scale along the line
of sight is about 2 x 10^{18} cm, while bright features within the filament
correspond to ripples with radii of curvature less than 1/10 that size. The
derived densities are within the broad range of earlier density estimates, and
they agree well with the ionization time scale derived from the Chandra X-ray
spectrum of a region just behind the optical filament. This provides a test for
widely used models of the X-ray emission from SNR shocks. The scale and
amplitude of the ripples are consistent with expectations for a shock
propagating though interstellar gas with ~ 20% density fluctuations on parsec
scales as expected from studies of interstellar turbulence. One bulge in the
filament corresponds to a knot of ejecta overtaking the blast wave, however.
The interaction results from the rapid deceleration of the blast wave as it

Choosing the lesser of two evils, the better of two goods: Specifying the roles of ventromedial prefrontal cortex and dorsal anterior cingulate in object choice
The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortices (ACd) are considered important for reward-based decision making. However, work distinguishing their individual functional contributions has only begun. One aspect of decision making that has received little attention is that making the right choice often translates to making the better choice. Thus, response choice often occurs in situations where both options are desirable (e.g., choosing between mousse au chocolat or crème caramel cheesecake from a menu) or, alternatively, in situations where both options are undesirable. Moreover, response choice is easier when the reinforcements associated with the objects are far apart, rather than close together, in value. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to delineate the functional roles of the vmPFC and ACd by investigating these two aspects of decision making: (1) decision form (i.e., choosing between two objects to gain the greater reward or the lesser punishment), and (2) between-object reinforcement distance (i.e., the difference in reinforcements associated with the two objects). Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) responses within the ACd and vmPFC were both related to decision form but differentially. Whereas ACd showed greater responses when deciding between objects to gain the lesser punishment, vmPFC showed greater responses when deciding between objects to gain the greater reward. Moreover, vmPFC was sensitive to reinforcement expectations associated with both the chosen and the forgone choice. In contrast, BOLD responses within ACd, but not vmPFC, related to between-object reinforcement distance, increasing as the distance between the reinforcements of the two objects decreased.
