    Use of a silver-coated plate to treat a postoperative infection after high tibial osteotomy – a case report

    Unilateral osteoarthritis of the knee can be treated by osteotomy. In case of postoperative infection after high tibial osteotomy, treatment can be challenging and often requires implant removal with the risk of loss of reduction. In the presented case, a 47-year old patient suffered postoperative infection after high tibial osteotomy using an angular stable plate with the need for multiple revision surgeries and anti-infective therapy. Implant exchange to a silver-coated angular plate led to infection control with undisturbed wound healing and further bone consolidation. Full bone consolidation could be achieved radiographically 12 months after the last revision surgery. One-step implant exchange using silver-coated implants could be a promising approach to address postoperative infections after high tibial osteotomy.</p

    Scattering functions of knotted ring polymers

    We discuss the scattering function of a Gaussian random polygon with N nodes under a given topological constraint through simulation. We obtain the Kratky plot of a Gaussian polygon of N=200 having a fixed knot for some different knots such as the trivial, trefoil and figure-eight knots. We find that some characteristic properties of the different Kratky plots are consistent with the distinct values of the mean square radius of gyration for Gaussian polygons with the different knots.Comment: 4pages, 3figures, 3table

    Generation of single colour centers by focussed nitrogen implantation

    Single defect centers in diamond have been generated via nitrogen implantation. The defects have been investigated by single defect center fluorescence microscopy. Optical and EPR spectra unambiguously show that the produced defect is the nitrogen-vacancy colour center. An analysis of the nitrogen flux together with a determination of the number of nitrogen-vacancy centers yields that on average two 2 MeV nitrogen atoms need to be implanted per defect center.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Global Regulation on microRNA in Hepatitis B Virus-Associated Hepatocellular Carcinoma

    Recent work has revealed the causative links between deregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) and cancer development. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), aberrant expression of miRNAs has been observed, but the molecular mechanisms that contribute to such changes remains to be elucidated. Here, we reported the analysis of miRNA expression in 94 pairs of tumor and adjacent nontumor tissues from HBV-associated HCC in Chinese patients. We found miRNAs were aberrantly expressed in HCC tissues. To investigate the cause of such deregulation, we detected changes in DNA copy number by measuring locus-specific hybridization intensity, and found changes in expression of several miRNAs are correlated with genomic amplification or deletion. For example, the genomic regions of miR-30d and miR-151 were amplified in ∼50% of HCC tumor tissues, and the expressions of these miRNAs are significantly correlated with DNA copy number. We also employed cDNA microarray data, and provide evidence that key regulators of the miRNA biosynthetic pathway, including DROSHA, DGCR8, AGO1, and AGO2, are frequently overexpressed in HCC.     Identification of Ag-acceptors in 111 ⁣^{111}\!Ag 111 ⁣^{111}\!Cd doped ZnTe and CdTe

    Nominally undoped ZnTe and CdTe crystals were implanted with radioactive 111 ⁣^{111}\!Ag, which decays to 111 ⁣^{111}\!Cd, and investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). In ZnTe, the PL lines caused by an acceptor level at 121 meV are observed: the principal bound exciton (PBE) line, the donor-acceptor pair (DAP) band, and the two-hole transition lines. In CdTe, the PBE line and the DAP band that correspond to an acceptor level at 108 meV appear. Since the intensities of all these PL lines decrease in good agreement with the half-life of 111 ⁣^{111}\!Ag of 178.8 h, both acceptor levels are concluded to be associated with defects containing a single Ag atom. Therefore, the earlier assignments to substitutional Ag on Zn- and Cd-lattice sites in the respective II-VI semiconductors are confirmed. The assignments in the literature of the S1_1, S2_2, and S3_3 lines in ZnTe and the X1Ag,\scriptstyle^\textrm{Ag}_{1}\,\,, X2Ag\scriptstyle^\textrm{Ag}_{2}/ C1Ag\scriptstyle^\textrm{Ag}_{1}\, and C2Ag\scriptstyle^\textrm{Ag}_{2}\, lines in CdTe to Ag-related defect complexes are not confirmed

    The Halo Mass of Optically Luminous Quasars at z ,F≈ ,F1-2 Measured via Gravitational Deflection of the Cosmic Microwave Background

    © 2019. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.We measure the average deflection of cosmic microwave background photons by quasars at 〈Z〉= 1.7. Our sample is selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to cover the redshift range 0.9 ≤z≤2.2 with absolute i-band magnitudes of M i ≤-24 (K-corrected to z = 2). A stack of nearly 200,000 targets reveals an 8δ detection of Planck's estimate of the lensing convergence toward the quasars. We fit the signal with a model comprising a Navarro-Frenk-White density profile and a two-halo term accounting for correlated large-scale structure, which dominates the observed signal. The best-fitting model is described by an average halo mass log 10 (M h h -1 M)12.6 ±0.2 = and linear bias b=2.7±0.3 at 〈Z 〉= 1.7, in excellent agreement with clustering studies. We also report a hint, at a 90% confidence level, of a correlation between the convergence amplitude and luminosity, indicating that quasars brighter than Mi≲ -26 reside in halos of typical mass M h ≈ 10 13 h -1 M, scaling roughly as M h ∞ L opt 3/4 at M i ≲-24 mag, in good agreement with physically motivated quasar demography models. Although we acknowledge that this luminosity dependence is a marginal result, the observed Mh-L opt relationship could be interpreted as a reflection of the cutoff in the distribution of black hole accretion rates toward high Eddington ratios: the weak trend of Mh with Lopt observed at low luminosity becomes stronger for the most powerful quasars, which tend to be accreting close to the Eddington limit.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
