The Epistemology of Intentionality: Notional Constituents vs. Direct Grasp
Franz Brentano is well known for highlighting the importance of intentionality, but he said curiously little about the nature of intentionality. According to Mark Textor, there is a deep reason for this: Brentano took intentionality to be a conceptual primitive the nature of which is revealed only in direct grasp. Although there is certainly textual support for this interpretation, it appears in tension with Brentano’s repeated attempts to analyze intentionality in terms of ‘notional constituents’ – aspects of intentionality which cannot come apart in reality but which can be conceptually distinguished. After bringing out this tension, I explore some options for resolving it, ultimately offering my own favored interpretation

Alternative Interpretation of Sharply Rising E0 Strengths in Transitional Regions
It is shown that strong 0+2 -> 0+1 E0 transitions provide a clear signature
of phase transitional behavior in finite nuclei. Calculations using the IBA
show that these transition strengths exhibit a dramatic and robust increase in
spherical-deformed shape transition regions, that this rise matches well the
existing data, that the predictions of these E0 transitions remain large in
deformed nuclei, and that these properties are intrinsic to the way that
collectivity and deformation develop through the phase transitional region in
the model, arising from the specific d-boson coherence in the wave functions,
and that they do not necessarily require the explicit mixing of normal and
intruder configurations from different IBA spaces.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

Spreading Width for Decay out of a Superdeformed Band
The attenuation factor F responsible for the decay out of a superdeformed
(SD) band is calculated with the help of a statistical model. This factor is
given by 1/F = (1 + Gamma(down) / Gamma(S)). Here, Gamma(S) is the width for
the collective E2 transition within the superdeformed band, and Gamma(down) is
the spreading width which describes the mixing between a state in the SD band
and the normally deformed (ND) states of equal spin. The attenuation factor F
is independent of the statistical E1 decay widths Gamma(N) of the ND states
provided that the Gamma(N) are much larger than both Gamma(down) and Gamma(S).
This condition is generically met. Previously measured values of F are used to

Cognitive Computation sans Representation
The Computational Theory of Mind (CTM) holds that cognitive processes are essentially computational, and hence computation provides the scientific key to explaining mentality. The Representational Theory of Mind (RTM) holds that representational content is the key feature in distinguishing mental from non-mental systems. I argue that there is a deep incompatibility between these two theoretical frameworks, and that the acceptance of CTM provides strong grounds for rejecting RTM. The focal point of the incompatibility is the fact that representational content is extrinsic to formal procedures as such, and the intended interpretation of syntax makes no difference to the execution of an algorithm. So the unique 'content' postulated by RTM is superfluous to the formal procedures of CTM. And once these procedures are implemented in a physical mechanism, it is exclusively the causal properties of the physical mechanism that are responsible for all aspects of the system's behaviour. So once again, postulated content is rendered superfluous. To the extent that semantic content may appear to play a role in behaviour, it must be syntactically encoded within the system, and just as in a standard computational artefact, so too with the human mind/brain - it's pure syntax all the way down to the level of physical implementation. Hence 'content' is at most a convenient meta-level gloss, projected from the outside by human theorists, which itself can play no role in cognitive processing
Early immune responses and development of pathogenesis of avian infectious bronchitis viruses with different virulence profiles.
Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) primarily replicates in epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract of chickens, inducing both morphological and immune modulatory changes. However, the association between the local immune responses induced by IBV and the mechanisms of pathogenesis has not yet been completely elucidated. This study compared the expression profile of genes related to immune responses in tracheal samples after challenge with two Brazilian field isolates (A and B) of IBV from the same genotype, associating these responses with viral replication and with pathological changes in trachea and kidney. We detected a suppressive effect on the early activation of TLR7 pathway, followed by lower expression levels of inflammatory related genes induced by challenge with the IBV B isolate when compared to the challenge with to the IBV A isolate. Cell-mediated immune (CMI) related genes presented also lower levels of expression in tracheal samples from birds challenged with B isolate at 1dpi. Increased viral load and a higher percentage of birds with relevant lesions were observed in both tracheal and renal samples from chickens exposed to challenge with IBV B isolate. This differential pattern of early immune responses developed after challenge with IBV B isolate, related to the downregulation of TLR7, leading to insufficient pro-inflammatory response and lower CMI responses, seem to have an association with a most severe renal lesion and an enhanced capability of replication of this isolate in chicken
Singular Character of Critical Points in Nuclei
The concept of critical points in nuclear phase transitional regions is
discussed from the standpoints of Q-invariants, simple observables and wave
function entropy. It is shown that these critical points very closely coincide
with the turning points of the discussed quantities, establishing the singular
character of these points in nuclear phase transition regions between
