    Characterization of a Differential Radio-Frequency Single-Electron Transistor

We have fabricated and characterized a new type of electrometer that couples two parallel single-electron transistors (SETs) to a radio-frequency tank circuit for use as a differential RF-SET. We demonstrate operation of this device in summing, differential, and single-SET operation modes, and use it to measure a Coulomb staircase from a differential single Cooper-pair box. In differential mode, the device is sensitive to uncorrelated input signals while screening out correlated ones.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter

Ferromagnetism of 3^3He Films in the Low Field Limit

We provide evidence for a finite temperature ferromagnetic transition in 2-dimensions as H0H \to 0 in thin films of 3^3He on graphite, a model system for the study of two-dimensional magnetism. We perform pulsed and CW NMR experiments at fields of 0.03 - 0.48 mT on 3^3He at areal densities of 20.5 - 24.2 atoms/nm2^2. At these densities, the second layer of 3^3He has a strongly ferromagnetic tendency. With decreasing temperature, we find a rapid onset of magnetization that becomes independent of the applied field at temperatures in the vicinity of 1 mK. Both the dipolar field and the NMR linewidth grow rapidly as well, which is consistent with a large (order unity) polarization of the 3^3He spins.Comment: 4 figure

Detection of ferromagnetic domains in a two-dimensional nuclear-spin system

We observe magnetic ordering of the 3He spins at the surface of exfoliated graphite. In very low applied magnetic fields (≤3 G) we find new modes in the NMR resonance spectrum with the amplitude of these lines increasing sharply below 0.8 mK. We interpret our results in terms of a ferromagnetically aligned spin system, and conclude that there must be an anisotropy in the graphite planes

Zero-field magnetic order in the boundary layers of 3He on Grafoil

The low-field NMR spectra of 3He boundary layers on exfoliated graphite show collective modes for T<1 mK. We measure the amplitude and frequency for these modes with the static H0 field applied parallel to the graphite planes and varying continuously between 0 and 15 G. One of the modes extrapolates to a nonzero frequency and amplitude as the field is dropped to zero. We interpret these nonzero intercepts as an indication of zero-field magnetic order in the 3He boundary layers

    A heteroepitaxial perovskite metal-base transistor

'More than Moore' captures a concept for overcoming limitations in silicon electronics by incorporating new functionalities in the constituent materials. Perovskite oxides are candidates because of their vast array of physical properties in a common structure. They also enable new electronic devices based on strongly-correlated electrons. The field effect transistor and its derivatives have been the principal oxide devices investigated thus far, but another option is available in a different geometry: if the current is perpendicular to the interface, the strong internal electric fields generated at back-to-back heterojunctions can be used for oxide electronics, analogous to bipolar transistors. Here we demonstrate a perovskite heteroepitaxial metal-base transistor operating at room temperature, enabled by interface dipole engineering. Analysis of many devices quantifies the evolution from hot-electron to permeable-base behaviour. This device provides a platform for incorporating the exotic ground states of perovskite oxides, as well as novel electronic phases at their interfaces

Development of the rhopalial nervous system in Aurelia sp.1 (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa)

We examined the development of the nervous system in the rhopalium, a medusa-specific sensory structure, in Aurelia sp.1 (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) using confocal microscopy. The rhopalial nervous system appears primarily ectodermal and contains neurons immunoreactive to antibodies against tyrosinated tubulin, taurine, GLWamide, and FMRFamide. The rhopalial nervous system develops in an ordered manner: the presumptive gravity-sensing organ, consisting of the lithocyst and the touch plate, differentiates first; the “marginal center,” which controls swimming activity, second; and finally, the ocelli, the presumptive photoreceptors. At least seven bilaterally arranged neuronal clusters consisting of sensory and ganglion cells and their neuronal processes became evident in the rhopalium during metamorphosis to the medusa stage. Our analysis provides an anatomical framework for future gene expression and experimental studies of development and functions of scyphozoan rhopalia
