Surface coupling effects on the capacitance of thin insulating films
A general form for the surface roughness effects on the capacitance of a
capacitor is proposed. We state that a capacitor with two uncoupled rough
surfaces could be treated as two capacitors in series which have been divided
from the mother capacitor by a slit. This is in contrast to the case where the
two rough surfaces are coupled. When the rough surfaces are coupled, the type
of coupling decides the modification of the capacitance in comparison to the
uncoupled case. It is shown that if the coupling between the two surfaces of
the capacitor is positive (negative), the capacitance is less (higher) than the
case of two uncoupled rough plates. Also, we state that when the correlation
length and the roughness exponent are small, the coupling effect is not
negligible
Extensions of Lieb's concavity theorem
The operator function (A,B)\to\tr f(A,B)(K^*)K, defined on pairs of bounded
self-adjoint operators in the domain of a function f of two real variables, is
convex for every Hilbert Schmidt operator K, if and only if f is operator
convex. As a special case we obtain a new proof of Lieb's concavity theorem for
the function (A,B)\to\tr A^pK^*B^{q}K, where p and q are non-negative numbers
with sum p+q\le 1. In addition, we prove concavity of the operator function
(A,B)\to \tr(A(A+\mu_1)^{-1}K^* B(B+\mu_2)^{-1}K) on its natural domain

Multi-time delay, multi-point Linear Stochastic Estimation of a cavity shear layer velocity from wall-pressure measurements
Multi-time-delay Linear Stochastic Estimation (MTD-LSE) technique is thoroughly described, focusing on its fundamental properties and potentialities. In the multi-time-delay ap- proach, the estimate of the temporal evolution of the velocity at a given location in the flow field is obtained from multiple past samples of the unconditional sources. The technique is applied to estimate the velocity in a cavity shear layer flow, based on wall-pressure measurements from multiple sensor
The principle of a virtual multi-channel lock-in amplifier and its application to magnetoelectric measurement system
This letter presents principles and applications of a virtual multi-channel
lock-in amplifier that is a simple but effective method to recover small ac
signal from noise with high presison. The fundamentals of this method are based
on calculation of cross-correlation function. Via this method, we successfully
built up a magnetoelectric measurement system which can perform precise and
versatile measurements without any analog lock-in amplifier. Using the virtual
multi-channel lock-in amplifier, the output of the magnetoelectric measurement
system is extensively rich in magnetoelectric coupling behaviors, including
coupling strength and phase lag, under various dc bias magnetic field and ac
magnetic field.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. To be submitted to Rev. Sci. Instr
Layer Features of the Lattice Gas Model for Self-Organized Criticality
A layer-by-layer description of the asymmetric lattice gas model for
1/f-noise suggested by Jensen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 3103 (1990)] is presented.
The power spectra of the lattice layers in the direction perpendicular to the
particle flux is studied in order to understand how the white noise at the
input boundary evolves, on the average, into 1/f-noise for the system. The
effects of high boundary drive and uniform driving force on the power spectrum
of the total number of diffusing particles are considered. In the case of
nearest-neighbor particle interactions, high statistics simulation results show
that the power spectra of single lattice layers are characterized by different
exponents such that as one approaches the outer
boundary.Comment: LaTeX, figures upon reques
Comparison of Langevin and Markov channel noise models for neuronal signal generation
The stochastic opening and closing of voltage-gated ion channels produces
noise in neurons. The effect of this noise on the neuronal performance has been
modelled using either approximate or Langevin model, based on stochastic
differential equations or an exact model, based on a Markov process model of
channel gating. Yet whether the Langevin model accurately reproduces the
channel noise produced by the Markov model remains unclear. Here we present a
comparison between Langevin and Markov models of channel noise in neurons using
single compartment Hodgkin-Huxley models containing either and
, or only voltage-gated ion channels. The performance of the
Langevin and Markov models was quantified over a range of stimulus statistics,
membrane areas and channel numbers. We find that in comparison to the Markov
model, the Langevin model underestimates the noise contributed by voltage-gated
ion channels, overestimating information rates for both spiking and non-spiking
membranes. Even with increasing numbers of channels the difference between the
two models persists. This suggests that the Langevin model may not be suitable
for accurately simulating channel noise in neurons, even in simulations with
large numbers of ion channels
The equivalence of fluctuation scale dependence and autocorrelations
We define optimal per-particle fluctuation and correlation measures, relate
fluctuations and correlations through an integral equation and show how to
invert that equation to obtain precise autocorrelations from fluctuation scale
dependence. We test the precision of the inversion with Monte Carlo data and
compare autocorrelations to conditional distributions conventionally used to
study high- jet structure.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, proceedings, MIT workshop on correlations and
