Interaction and Expressivity in Video Games: Harnessing the Rhetoric of Film

    Get PDF
The film-maker uses the camera and editing creatively, not simply to present the action of the film but also to set up a particular relation between the action and the viewer. In 3D video games with action controlled by the player, the pseudo camera is usually less creatively controlled and has less effect on the player’s appreciation of and engagement with the game. This paper discusses methods of controlling games by easy and intuitive interfaces and use of an automated virtual camera to increase the appeal of games for users

Comment on ``Solution of Classical Stochastic One-Dimensional Many-Body Systems''

In a recent Letter, Bares and Mobilia proposed the method to find solutions of the stochastic evolution operator H=H0+ÎłLH1H=H_0 + {\gamma\over L} H_1 with a non-trivial quartic term H1H_1. They claim, ``Because of the conservation of probability, an analog of the Wick theorem applies and all multipoint correlation functions can be computed.'' Using the Wick theorem, they expressed the density correlation functions as solutions of a closed set of integro-differential equations. In this Comment, however, we show that applicability of Wick theorem is restricted to the case Îł=0\gamma = 0 only.Comment: 1 page, revtex style, comment on paper Phys. Rev. Solution of classical stochastic one dimensional many-body systems

We propose a simple method that allows, in one dimension, to solve exactly a wide class of classical stochastic many-body systems far from equilibrium. For the sake of illustration and without loss of generality, we focus on a model that describes the asymmetric diffusion of hard core particles in the presence of an external source and instantaneous annihilation. Starting from a Master equation formulation of the problem we show that the density and multi-point correlation functions obey a closed set of integro-differential equations which in turn can be solved numerically and/or analyticallyComment: 2 figure

Exact multipoint and multitime correlation functions of a one-dimensional model of adsorption and evaporation of dimers

In this work, we provide a method which allows to compute exactly the multipoint and multi-time correlation functions of a one-dimensional stochastic model of dimer adsorption-evaporation with random (uncorrelated) initial states. In particular explicit expressions of the two-point noninstantaneous/instantaneous correlation functions are obtained. The long-time behavior of these expressions is discussed in details and in various physical regimes.Comment: 6 pages, no figur

Bulk and shear relaxation in glasses and highly viscous liquids

The ratio between the couplings of a relaxational process to compression and shear, respectively, is calculated in the Eshelby picture of structural rearrangements within a surrounding elastic matrix, assuming a constant density of stable structures in distortion space. The result is compared to experimental data for the low-temperature tunneling states in glasses and to Prigogine-Defay data at the glass transition from the literature.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 53 references; version after understanding the Prigogine-Defay ratio at the glass transition in the accompanying paper arXiv:1203.3555 [cond-mat.dis-nn

Cycle by cycle NOx model for diesel engine control

[EN] This paper presents a model for on-line NOx estimation. The method uses both, low frequency components and high frequency components of in-cylinder pressure signal: it harnesses in-cylinder pressure resonance to estimate the trapped mass, and based on this measurement, a NOx model is adapted to estimate NOx emissions cycle by cycle. In addition of the in-cylinder pressure signal, the procedure only requires from lambda and air mass flow to estimate NOx, so it can give a direct estimation of NOx or improve transient response and aging of current NOx sensors. The method was validated on a CI engine with high pressure EGR loop under steady and transient conditions showing errors below 10% and cycle by cycle time response. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Critical Properties of Spectral Functions for the 1D Anisotropic t-J Models with an Energy Gap

We exactly calculate the momentum-dependent critical exponents for spectral functions in the one-dimensional anisotropic t-J models with a gap either in the spin or charge excitation spectrum. Our approach is based on the Bethe ansatz technique combined with finite-size scaling techniques in conformal field theory. It is found that the spectral functions show a power-law singularity, which occurs at frequencies determined by the dispersion of a massive spin (or charge) excitation. We discuss how the nontrivial contribution of a massive excitation controls the singular behavior in optical response functions.Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX, 2 figures(available upon request), accepted for publication in JPSJ 66 (1997) No.

Renormalization group analysis of the spin-gap phase in the one-dimensional t-J model

We study the spin-gap phase in the one-dimensional t-J model, assuming that it is caused by the backward scattering process. Based on the renormalization group analysis and symmetry, we can determine the transition point between the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and the spin-gap phases, by the level crossing of the singlet and the triplet excitations. In contrast to the previous works, the obtained spin-gap region is unexpectedly large. We also check that the universality class of the transition belongs to the k=1k=1 SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten model.Comment: 4 pages(RevTeX), 5 figures(EPS), TITCMT-97-10, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Exact Solution of a Electron System Combining Two Different t-J Models

A new strongly correlated electron model is presented. This is formed by two types of sites: one where double occupancy is forbidden, as in the t-J model, and the other where double occupancy is allowed but vacancy is not allowed, as an inverse t-J model. The Hamiltonian shows nearest and next-to-nearest neighbour interactions and it is solved by means of a modified algebraic nested Bethe Ansatz. The number of sites where vacancy is not allowed, may be treated as a new parameter if the model is looked at as a t-J model with impurities. The ground and excited states are described in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: Some corrections and references added. To be published in J. Phys.
