    FDTD/K-DWM simulation of 3D room acoustics on general purpose graphics hardware using compute unified device architecture (CUDA)

    The growing demand for reliable prediction of sound fields in rooms have resulted in adaptation of various approaches for physical modeling, including the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) and the Digital Waveguide Mesh (DWM). Whilst considered versatile and attractive methods, they suffer from dispersion errors that increase with frequency and vary with direction of propagation, thus imposing a high frequency calculation limit. Attempts have been made to reduce such errors by considering different mesh topologies, by spatial interpolation, or by simply oversampling the grid. As the latter approach is computationally expensive, its application to three-dimensional problems has often been avoided. In this paper, we propose an implementation of the FDTD on general purpose graphics hardware, allowing for high sampling rates whilst maintaining reasonable calculation times. Dispersion errors are consequently reduced and the high frequency limit is increased. A range of graphics processors are evaluated and compared with traditional CPUs in terms of accuracy, calculation time and memory requirements

    Are the energy and virial routes to thermodynamics equivalent for hard spheres?

    The internal energy of hard spheres (HS) is the same as that of an ideal gas, so that the energy route to thermodynamics becomes useless. This problem can be avoided by taking an interaction potential that reduces to the HS one in certain limits. In this paper the square-shoulder (SS) potential characterized by a hard-core diameter σ\sigma', a soft-core diameter σ>σ\sigma>\sigma' and a shoulder height ϵ\epsilon is considered. The SS potential becomes the HS one if (i) ϵ0\epsilon\to 0, or (ii) ϵ\epsilon\to\infty, or (iii) σσ\sigma'\to\sigma or (iv) σ0\sigma'\to 0 and ϵ\epsilon\to\infty. The energy-route equation of state for the HS fluid is obtained in terms of the radial distribution function for the SS fluid by taking the limits (i) and (ii). This equation of state is shown to exhibit, in general, an artificial dependence on the diameter ratio σ/σ\sigma'/\sigma. If furthermore the limit σ/σ1\sigma'/\sigma\to 1 is taken, the resulting equation of state for HS coincides with that obtained through the virial route.     Nutritional Status of School Age Children (5-14 years) in a Rural Health Block of North India (Kashmir) Using WHO Z-Score System

    Objective: To assess the nutritional status of school going children in Rural Block Hajin. Methods: School children from various primary and middle level educational facilities from a rural health block were surveyed during the School Health Program. Height and weight was measured following standard procedures. MS Excel and Interactive statistics page were used for analysis of data. Results: Both mean weight and height were higher in females than males. The overall prevalence of under nutrition was 19.2%. The prevalence of underweight was lowest in 5 year female (0.0%) and highest in 6 year male (21.5%). For Stunting 7 year males recorded the lowest (0.0%) and 12 year males the highest (28.5%) prevalence. The highest and lowest prevalence of wasting was recorded in 6 year old females (2.56%) and 9 year old males (24.6%) respectively. Prevalence of thinness was lowest in 13 year old females (14.2%) and highest in 13 year old males (47.1%).Conclusion: The nutritional status of school age children in this health block are comparatively better even though a large number of children still fall below the cutoff for various nutritional indicators

    Exploring the Referral and Usage of Science Fiction in HCI Literature

    Research on science fiction (sci-fi) in scientific publications has indicated the usage of sci-fi stories, movies or shows to inspire novel Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. Yet no studies have analysed sci-fi in a top-ranked computer science conference at present. For that reason, we examine the CHI main track for the presence and nature of sci-fi referrals in relationship to HCI research. We search for six sci-fi terms in a dataset of 5812 CHI main proceedings and code the context of 175 sci-fi referrals in 83 papers indexed in the CHI main track. In our results, we categorize these papers into five contemporary HCI research themes wherein sci-fi and HCI interconnect: 1) Theoretical Design Research; 2) New Interactions; 3) Human-Body Modification or Extension; 4) Human-Robot Interaction and Artificial Intelligence; and 5) Visions of Computing and HCI.     Effect of prednisolone on inflammatory markers in pericardial tuberculosis: A pilot study

    Background: Pericardial disorders are a common cause of heart disease, and the most common cause of pericarditis in developing countries is tuberculous (TB) pericarditis. It has been shown that prednisolone added to standard anti-TB therapy leads to a lower rate of constrictive pericarditis. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the effect of adjunctive prednisolone treatment on the concentration of inflammatory markers in pericardial tuberculosis, in order to inform immunological mechanisms at the disease site. Methods: Pericardial fluid, plasma and saliva samples were collected from fourteen patients with pericardial tuberculosis, at multiple time points. Inflammatory markers were measured using multiplex luminex analysis and ELISA. Results: In samples from 14 patients we confirmed a strongly compartmentalized immune response at the disease site and found that prednisolone significantly reduced IL-6 concentrations in plasma by 8 hours of treatment, IL-1beta concentrations in saliva, as well as IL-8 concentrations in both pericardial fluid and saliva by 24 hours. Conclusion: Monitoring the early effect of adjunctive immunotherapy in plasma or saliva is a possibility in pericarditis
