    Gravitational slingshot

    Get PDF
The slingshot effect is an intriguing phenomenon that has been used effectively by NASA to send spacecraft to outer edges of the solar system. This phenomenon can be satisfactorily explained by Newtonian physics. However, if it is presented as a problem involving four-momentum conservation, the methods of relativistic kinematics easily lead to the conditions necessary for an accelerating as well as a retarding scenario. This problem provides an example that showcases the frequent utility of relativistic methods to analyze problems of Newtonian mechanics

Surface plasmon resonance imaging detection of silver nanoparticle-tagged immunoglobulin

This article is available open access through the publisher’s website at the link below. Copyright @ 2011 The Royal Society. The detection sensitivity of silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-tagged goat immunoglobulin G (gIgG) microarrays was investigated by studying surface plasmon resonance (SPR) images captured in the visible wavelength range with the help of a Kretchmann-configured optical coupling set-up. The functionalization of anti-gIgG molecules on the AgNP surface was studied using transmission electron microscopy, photon correlation measurements and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. A value of 1.3 × 107 M−1 was obtained for the antibody–antigen binding constant by monitoring the binding events at a particular resonance wavelength. The detection limit of this SPR imaging instrument is 6.66 nM of gIgG achieved through signal enhancement by a factor of larger than 4 owing to nanoparticle tagging with the antibody. The European Commissio

Corneoscleral laceration and ocular burns caused by electronic cigarette explosions

PURPOSE: To report cases of acute globe rupture and bilateral corneal burns from electronic cigarette (EC) explosions. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: We describe a series of patients with corneal injury caused by EC explosions. Both patients suffered bilateral corneal burns and decreased visual acuity, and one patient sustained a unilateral corneoscleral laceration with prolapsed iris tissue and hyphema. A review of the scientific literature revealed no prior reported cases of ocular injury secondary to EC explosions; however, multiple media and government agency articles describe fires and explosions involving ECs, including at least 4 with ocular injuries. CONCLUSIONS: Given these cases and the number of recent media reports, ECs pose a significant public health risk. Users should be warned regarding the possibility of severe injury, including sight-threatening ocular injuries ranging from corneal burns to full-thickness corneoscleral laceration

Lymphangiosarcoma of the arm presenting with lymphedema in a woman 16 years after mastectomy: a case report

    Get PDF
Lymphangiosarcoma following breast cancer is a relatively rare entity, with around 300 cases so far reported worldwide. Affecting the long term survivors of breast cancer, lymphangiosarcoma (Stewart-Traves Syndrome) has a high mortality rate. Since lympedema following radical mastectomy or axillary clearance and radiotherapy seems to be the main predisposing factor, further research regarding modifications in the surgical technique of axillary nodes dissection as well as the development of new chemotherapeutic agents effective in lymphangiosarcoma are required

Physician and patient barriers to adherence with cholesterol guidelines

    Get PDF
Several national studies have shown poor compliance with National Cholesterol Education Program II (NCEP) goals. A study we conducted of patients in the General Internal Medicine Clinic at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in Huntington showed that 46% of them were not at NCEP goals. We hypothesized that both patient and physician barriers were responsible for these findings so we administered two surveys about barriers to cholesterol management to 261 random patients identified with hypercholesterolemia and to all 50 residents and faculty at the clinic. We identified insufficient knowledge of low cholesterol foods as a patient barrier (31.6% of patients), and inadequate time to review NCEP guidelines as a physician barrier (45.5% of physicians). We conclude that many patients in our practice lack the knowledge of what foods are low in cholesterol and that our physicians may not use the NCEP guidelines because they are inconvenient to access in our clinic. Future research should explore ways to improve patient knowledge of low cholesterol foods and accessibility of guidelines for use during patient visits

Perturbation of Interaction Networks for Application to Cancer Therapy

    Get PDF
We present a computational approach for studying the effect of potential drug combinations on the protein networks associated with tumor cells. The majority of therapeutics are designed to target single proteins, yet most diseased states are characterized by a combination of many interacting genes and proteins. Using the topology of protein-protein interaction networks, our methods can explicitly model the possible synergistic effect of targeting multiple proteins using drug combinations in different cancer types

The clinical significance of transfer RNAs present in extracellular vesicles

    Get PDF
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important for intercellular signalling in multi-cellular organ-isms. However, the role of mature transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and tRNA fragments in EVs has yet to be characterised. This systematic review aimed to identify up-to-date literature on tRNAs pre-sent within human EVs and explores their potential clinical significance in health and disease. A comprehensive and systematic literature search was performed, and the study was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Electronic databases MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched up until 1st January 2022. From 685 papers, 60 studies were identified for analysis. The majority of papers reviewed focussed on the role of EV tRNAs in cancers (31.7%), with numerous other conditions represented. Blood and cell lines were the most common EV sources, representing 85.9% of protocols used. EV isolation methods included the most known methods, precipitation being the most common (49.3%). The proportion of EV tRNAs was highly variable, ranging be-tween 0.04% to >95% depending on tissue source. EV tRNAs are present in a multitude of sources and show promise as disease markers in breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, and other diseases. EV tRNA research is an emerging field, with increasing numbers of papers highlighting novel methodologies for tRNA and tRNA fragment discovery

A New Tool Preliminary Assessment on Temporal-Comorbidity Adjusted Risk of Emergency Readmission (T-CARER)

Patients’ comorbidities, operations and complications can be associated with reduced long-term survival probability and increased healthcare utilisation. The aim of this research was to produce an adjusted case-mix model of comorbidity risk and develop a user-friendly toolkit to encourage public adaptation and incremental development. It has been shown in healthcare research that demographics, temporal dimensions, length-of-stay and time between admissions, can noticeably improve the statistical measures related to comorbidities. The proposed model incorporates temporal aspects, medical procedures, demographics, and admission details, as well as diagnoses. The research resulted in the development of Temporal-Comorbidity Adjusted Risk of Emergency Readmission (T-CARER) model using routinely collected hospital data
