    Privacy is necessary in order for one to develop physically, mentally and affectively. Autonomy and self definitionhave been recognized by the United States Supreme Court as being values of privacy. In our technologicallyadvanced, and fear driven society, however, our right to privacy has been severely eroded. Due to encroachmentby government and business we have a diminished expectation of privacy. This article examines the detriments toself and society which result from a reduced sphere of privacy, as well as offering a modest suggestion for amethod to reintroduce an improved conception of privacy into citizens’ lives

    FO-PINNs: A First-Order formulation for Physics Informed Neural Networks

    We present FO-PINNs, physics-informed neural networks that are trained using the first-order formulation of the Partial Differential Equation (PDE) losses. We show that FO-PINNs offer significantly higher accuracy in solving parameterized systems compared to traditional PINNs, and reduce time-per-iteration by removing the extra backpropagations needed to compute the second or higher-order derivatives. Additionally, unlike standard PINNs, FO-PINNs can be used with exact imposition of boundary conditions using approximate distance functions, and can be trained using Automatic Mixed Precision (AMP) to further speed up the training. Through two Helmholtz and Navier-Stokes examples, we demonstrate the advantages of FO-PINNs over traditional PINNs in terms of accuracy and training speedup.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Selected for ML4PS workshop at NeurIPS 202

    Chandra Observation of an X-ray Flare at Saturn: Evidence for Direct Solar Control on Saturn's Disk X-ray Emissions

    Saturn was observed by Chandra ACIS-S on 20 and 26-27 January 2004 for one full Saturn rotation (10.7 hr) at each epoch. We report here the first observation of an X-ray flare from Saturn's non-auroral (low-latitude) disk, which is seen in direct response to an M6-class flare emanating from a sunspot that was clearly visible from both Saturn and Earth. Saturn's disk X-ray emissions are found to be variable on time scales of hours to weeks to months, and correlated with solar F10.7 cm flux. Unlike Jupiter, X-rays from Saturn's polar (auroral) region have characteristics similar to those from its disk. This report, combined with earlier studies, establishes that disk X-ray emissions of the giant planets Saturn and Jupiter are directly regulated by processes happening on the Sun. We suggest that these emissions could be monitored to study X-ray flaring from solar active regions when they are on the far side and not visible to Near-Earth space weather satellites.Comment: Total 12 pages including 4 figure

    Vortex Imaging in the pi-Band of Magnesium Diboride

    We report scanning tunneling spectroscopy imaging of the vortex lattice in single crystalline MgB2. By tunneling parallel to the c-axis, a single superconducting gap (Delta = 2.2 meV) associated with the pi-band is observed. The vortices in the pi-band have a large core size compared to estimates based on Hc2, and show an absence of localized states in the core. Furthermore, superconductivity between the vortices is rapidly suppressed by an applied field. These results suggest that superconductivity in the pi-band is, at least partially, induced by the intrinsically superconducting sigma-band.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Clonal expansion within pneumococcal serotype 6C after use of seven-valent vaccine

    Streptococcus pneumoniae causes invasive infections, primarily at the extremes of life. A seven-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) is used to protect against invasive pneumococcal disease in children. Within three years of PCV7 introduction, we observed a fourfold increase in serotype 6C carriage, predominantly due to a single clone. We determined the whole-genome sequences of nineteen S. pneumoniae serotype 6C isolates, from both carriage (n = 15) and disease (n = 4) states, to investigate the emergence of serotype 6C in our population, focusing on a single multi-locus sequence type (MLST) clonal complex 395 (CC395). A phylogenetic network was constructed to identify different lineages, followed by analysis of variability in gene sets and sequences. Serotype 6C isolates from this single geographical site fell into four broad phylogenetically distinct lineages. Variation was seen in the 6C capsular locus and in sequences of genes encoding surface proteins. The largest clonal complex was characterised by the presence of lantibiotic synthesis locus. In our population, the 6C capsular locus has been introduced into multiple lineages by independent capsular switching events. However, rapid clonal expansion has occurred within a single MLST clonal complex.     The Discovery of Argon in Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)

    On 30.14 March 1997 we observed the EUV spectrum of the bright comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at the time of its perihelion, using our EUVS sounding rocket telescope/spectrometer. The spectra reveal the presence H Ly beta, O+, and, most notably, Argon. Modelling of the retrieved Ar production rates indicates that comet Hale-Bopp is enriched in Ar relative to cosmogonic expectations. This in turn indicates that Hale-Bopp's deep interior has never been exposed to the 35-40 K temperatures necessary to deplete the comet's primordial argon supply.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures.
