Use of mathematical derivatives (time-domain differentiation) on chromatographic data to enhance the detection and quantification of an unknown 'rider' peak
Two samples of an anticancer prodrug, AQ4N, were submitted for HPLC assay and showed an unidentified impurity that eluted as a 'rider' on the tail of the main peak. Mathematical derivatization of the chromatograms offered several advantages over conventional skimmed integration. A combination of the second derivative amplitude and simple linear regression gave a novel method for estimating the true peak area of the impurity peak. All the calculation steps were carried out using a widely available spreadsheet program. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Treatment of dogs with compensated myxomatous mitral valve disease with spironolactone-a pilot study
Spironolactone improves outcome in dogs with advanced myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Its efficacy in preclinical MMVD is unknown. The hypothesis was the administration of spironolactone to dogs with compensated MMVD demonstrating risk factors for poorer prognosis will decrease the rate of disease progression. The aim was to provide pilot data to evaluate preliminary effects and sample size calculation for a definitive clinical trial

Classification of states of single- fermions with -pairing interaction
In this paper we show that a system of three fermions is exactly solvable for
the case of a single- in the presence of an angular momentum- pairing
interaction. On the basis of the solutions for this system, we obtain new sum
rules for six- symbols. It is also found that the "non-integer" eigenvalues
of three fermions with angular momentum around the maximum appear as
"non-integer" eigenvalues of four fermions when is around (or larger than)
and the Hamiltonian contains only an interaction between pairs of
fermions coupled to spin . This pattern is also found in
five and six fermion systems. A boson system with spin exhibits a similar
pattern.Comment: to be published in Physical Review
Anomalous minimum in the shear viscosity of a Fermi gas
We measure the static shear viscosity in a two-component Fermi gas
near a broad collisional (Feshbach) resonance, as a function of interaction
strength and energy. We find that has both a quadratic and a linear
dependence on the interaction strength , where is the s-wave
scattering length and is the Fermi wave vector for an ideal gas at the
trap center. For energies above the superfluid transition, the minimum in
as a function of interaction strength is significantly shifted toward
the BEC side of resonance, to .Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
