The association of the polymorphism and the development of neuroinfections
Introduction. Inflammation of the meninges can have various clinical courses, from mild, self-limiting in some
viral neuroinfections to severe, sometimes ending in death. The pro-inflammatory cascade and defects in the
inhibitors of the inflammatory response play an important prognostic role. Single nucleotide polymorphisms
(SNPs) of the genes encoding cytokines, influence the severity of the inflammatory response.
Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of selected polymorphisms of proinflammatory cytokines
, and IL-8 on the development of neuroinfections.
Material and Methods. We evaluated the laboratory results of 30 patients treated for bacterial and viral meningitis
and compared those to 30 healthy volunteers. The following 4 variants were analyzed for occurrence of genetic
polymorphism in patients with meningitis versus the control group: 3953, , -308, and IL-8
781. Then, we assessed the association between these genetic polymorphisms and the inflammatory response
during the course of meningitis.
Results and Conclusions. We observed that polymorphism of the signifi cantly differs between patients
and healthy subjects, the -31AA polymorphism existed only in healthy individuals (p < 0.001). The WBC
count was dependent on the -308 polymorphism with a statistically signifi cant difference (p = 0.021)
occurring among persons with variants AA and AG. In conclusion the study showed that the presence of the
AA genotype of polymorphism may have a protective effect on the development of meningitis. This
polymorphism was not observed in any patient with meningitis
Hepatic secretory activity of ghrelin in patients with chronic viral hepatitis
Grelina jest neuropeptydem włączonym w regulację bilansu
energetycznego organizmu. Znaczenie wątroby w przemianach greliny pozostaje przedmiotem badań. Dotychczasowe
wyniki ograniczają się do obserwacji zaburzeń osoczowego
poziomu tego hormonu spowodowanego różnymi formami
uszkodzenia narządu.
Cel pracy: Celem pracy była ocena metabolizmu greliny w wątrobie. Realizacja zamierzenia opierała się na ocenie stężenia
oraz wydzielania podstawowego i stymulowanego greliny
w tkankach wątroby i żołądka. Porównanie przemian greliny
w obu narządach wynika z dokładniejszego zdefiniowania
roli pełnionej przez badany związek w żołądku, będącego
głównym źródłem hormonu w tkankach obwodowych.
Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto 11 chorych z przewlekłym
określono zawartość greliny w bioptacie wątroby i żołądka.
Wnioski: Wyniki badania potwierdziły obecność greliny i aktywność wydzielniczą miąższu wątroby. Tkanka wątrobowa
wykazała kilkunastokrotnie niższe stężenia oznaczanego
związku w stosunku do ilości zawartej w śluzówce żołądka.
W warunkach podstawowych oraz w następstwie stymulacji
naltreksonem i greliną tkanka wątrobowa i żołądkowa wykazały zbliżone wydzielanie.Ghrelin is a neuropeptide which takes part in the regulation of
energetic balance in the human body. The role of the liver in
ghrelin metabolism remains unclear. Previous studies were
based on observations of changes in ghrelin concentrations in
serum in different liver diseases. It is well known that the
gastric mucosa seems to be the main source of ghrelin in the
peripheral tissues.
The aim of the study was to evaluate ghrelin metabolism in the
liver. It was based on the assessment of ghrelin concentration,
basic and peak stimulated secretion by liver and gastric mucosa.
Material and methods: The study was performed on 11 patients
with chronic viral hepatitis who were examined by liver biopsy
and gastroscopy because of clinical indications. Liver samples
taken by Menghini thick needle method and bioptates of gastric
mucosa were examined. The concentration of ghrelin was
measured by radioimmunological method, accounted by 1 mg
protein tissue. Ghrelin secretion was studied in two different
conditions: stabilized and stimulated by naltrexone and ghrelin.
Results: The concentration of ghrelin in the gastric mucosa was
twenty times higher than in the liver tissues (p<0.001). There
were no significant differences between the liver and stomach
tissues in both basic and stimulated ghrelin secretion.
Conclusions: The concentration of ghrelin in the liver is lower
than in the gastric mucosa. In the stabilized and stimulated by
ghrelin and naltrexone conditions the levels of ghrelin in the
liver and stomach were similar
Zachorowania na tężec w regionie Polski Południowej w latach 2000-2010
Introduction. Tetanus is an acute infectious disease which is caused by widely prevalent in soil, Gram-positive,anaerobic bacteria Clostridium tetani. Contamination of the injured skin by bacteria present in soil is the mainrisk factor of tetanus development, especially when the wound is deep or with foreign body inside it. Tetanus inPoland is almost always developing among patients over 60 years old.Materials and methods. We have analyzed tetanus cases in Department of Infectious Diseases in Krakow inyears 2000-2010.Results. 53 patients, among them 38 women (72 %) and 15 men (28 %) were hospitalized during ten years, meanage was 76. We have presented in article epidemiologic data, clinical symptoms, complications and co-morbiditiesanalyzed patients.Conclusions. Tetanus is prevalent mainly among elderly patients living in the country, bud substantial numberof analyzed patients were living in cities. The most important method of tetanus prevention is proper anti-tetanusprophylaxis.Wstęp. Tężec jest ostrą chorobą zakaźną z grupy toksykoz, spowodowaną szeroko rozpowszechnioną w glebie, Gram-dodatnią, bezwzględnie beztlenową, laseczką tężca (Clostridium tetani). Do zakażenia dochodzi najczęściej poprzez zanieczyszczenie zranionej skóry przetrwalnikami obecnymi w glebie. Rozwojowi zarodników sprzyjają rany głębokie i kłute, z obecnością ciała obcego. W Polsce zachorowania na tężec dotyczą prawie zawsze osób powyżej 60 roku życia.Materiał i metody. W pracy przedstawiono analizę zachorowań na tężec w Klinice Chorób Zakaźnych w Krakowie w latach 2000-2010.Wyniki. W ciągu 10 lat hospitalizowano 53 osoby, 38 kobiet (72 %) i 15 mężczyzn (28 %). Średnia wieku wynosiła 76 lat. Analizie poddano dane epidemiologiczne, okoliczności zakażenia, objawy tężca i ewentualnych powikłań, choroby współistniejące, zejście choroby. Wnioski.
