Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8
We report a neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation muSR study of static
and dynamical magnetic properties of BaCo2V2O8, a quasi-one-dimensional
spin-chain system. A proposed model for the antiferromagnetic structure
includes: a propagation vector k_AF = (0, 0, 1), independent of external
magnetic fields for fields below a critical value H_c(T). The ordered moments,
of 2.18 \mu_B per Co ion, are aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. Within
the screw chains, along the c axis, the moments are arranged
antiferromagnetically. In the basal planes the spins are arranged
ferromagnetically (forming zig-zags paths) along one of the axis and
antiferromagnetically along the other. The temperature dependence of the
sub-lattice magnetization is consistent with the expectations of the 3D Ising
model. A similar behavior is observed for the internal static fields at
different muon stopping sites. Muon time spectra measured at weak longitudinal
fields and temperatures much higher than T_N can be well described using a
single muon site with an exponential muon spin relaxation that gradually
changes into an stretched exponential on approaching T_N. The
temperature-induced changes of the relaxation suggest that the Co fluctuations
dramatically slow down and the system becomes less homogeneous as it approaches
the antiferromagnetic state.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Magnetoelastic coupling in triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuCrS2
CuCrS2 is a triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a rhombohedral
crystal structure. We report on neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction
results which reveal a monoclinic lattice distortion at the magnetic transition
and verify a magnetoelastic coupling. CuCrS2 is therefore an interesting
material to study the influence of magnetism on the relief of geometrical
frustration.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Magnetic Inversion Symmetry Breaking and Ferroelectricity in TbMnO\u3csub\u3e3\u3c/sub\u3e
TbMnO3 is an orthorhombic insulator where incommensurate spin order for temperature TN\u3c41 K is accompanied by ferroelectric order for T\u3c28 K. To understand this, we establish the magnetic structure above and below the ferroelectric transition using neutron diffraction. In the paraelectric phase, the spin structure is incommensurate and longitudinally modulated. In the ferroelectric phase, however, there is a transverse incommensurate spiral. We show that the spiral breaks spatial inversion symmetry and can account for magnetoelectricity in TbMnO3
Spiral Spin Structures and Origin of the Magnetoelectric Coupling in YMn\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3eO\u3csub\u3e5\u3c/sub\u3e
By combining neutron four-circle diffraction and polarized neutron-diffraction techniques we have determined the complex spin structures of a multiferroic YMn2O5 that exhibits two ferroelectric phases at low temperatures. The obtained magnetic structure has spiral components in both the low-temperature ferroelectric phases that are magnetically commensurate and incommensurate, respectively. Among proposed microscopic theories for the magnetoelectric coupling, our results are consistent with both the spin-current mechanism and the magnetostriction mechanism. Our results also explain why the electric polarization changes at the low-temperature commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition
The aim of the thesis was to correlated oxygen disorder and mobility for a series of Sr-doped La2CuO4 phases. From oxygen isotope back exchange experiments, the onset temperature for oxygen back exchange was found to be the same irrespective of Sr doping but the exchange rate is strongly influenced for higher Sr doped single crystals of La1.90Sr0.10CuO4 and La1.85Sr0.15CuO4. Detailed structural information was obtained at ambient and at high temperature from elastic neutron scattering data performed on La2CuO4 at RESI@FRM II and La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 and merohedrically. From least squares refinements with JANA2006 large anisotropic displacements were found for apical oxygen in all doped systems. Maximum entropy method used to understand details concerning apical oxygen disorder for each investigated system at ambient temperature and their role in low temperature oxygen ion diffusion. Nuclear density corresponding to apical oxygen is delocalized for x=0 and x=0.05 system. But for higher Sr doping (0.15), nuclear density was localized. This is a clear evidence for dynamic disorder of apical oxygen atom and their role of lattice dynamics in low temperature oxygen diffusion. Complementary measurements performed to determine the anisotropy of the oxygen mobility by using the O/ O tracer method by secondary ion mass spectroscopy and neutron scattering measurements as a function of Sr doping should also be envisaged to allow a better insight in the diffusion mechanism and pathway as a function of temperature.RENNES1-BU Sciences Philo (352382102) / SudocSudocFranceF
This thesis relates about structural studies of crystal oxides with variable oxygen stoichiometry. The synthesis procedure for large single crystal growth is detailed. These materials have a layered atomic structure in which extra-oxygen ions can be intercalated in a topotactic way by different methods, by electrochemistry already at ambient temperature or by thermal treatments under controlled atmosphere composition and pressure. The interstitial oxygen atoms are not statistically distributed within layers but are ordered at long-range, which provokes structural distortions of the crystal lattice. The atomic structure is then modulated by the occupation of interstitial sites and by the displacements of the surrounding atoms. The real structure of the oxygen-rich compounds has been studies by neutron and synchrotron X-ray single crystal diffraction. Reciprocal space plane reconstructions allowed us to measure precisely the positions and intensity of satellite reflections, and applying the maximum entropy method allowed us to visualize the nuclear densities with good precision, both favoring the study of short atomic displacements, and thus yielding better knowledge of the real crystal structure. The phase transition have also been studied with temperature by diffraction and thermogravimetry, showing that the oxygen content varies spontaneously and that the crystal phases of oxygen rich compounds astonishingly remain modulated until high temperature. The oxygen diffusion mechanism in these crystals could involve specific soft-phonon modes implying the rigid tilt of octahedra composing the crystal that amplify the mobility of interstitial oxygen atoms.
