On effective index approximations of photonic crystal slabs

    Get PDF
To assess the quality of effective index approximations for photonic crystal slabs, we consider a reduction of 2-D problems for waveguide Bragg gratings to 1-D, and compare with rigorous 2-D solutions. A variational procedure permits to establish reasonable effective indices even if locally no guided modes exist

On effective index approximations of photonic crystal slabs

As a means to assess the quality of effective index approximations in simulations of photonic crystal slabs, we consider a reduction of 2-D Helmholtz problems for waveguide Bragg gratings to 1-D wave propagation, and compare with rigorous 2-D reference solutions. Variational procedures permit to establish a reasonable effective index profile even in cases where locally no guided modes exist

Dimensionality reduction for 3D vectorial optical scattering problems

    Get PDF
The spatial dimensionality of vectorial 3D frequency domain optical scattering problems is reduced by means of a global expansion of the field in one direction in slab modes of some reference slice(s). A variational formalism yields the equations in the other two directions. These coupled partial differential equations are solved using a Finite Element Method with modified Transparent Influx Boundary Conditions with PMLs

Synote Discussion. Extending Synote to support threaded discussions synchronised with recorded videos

    No full text
Synote Discussion has been developed as an accessible cross device and cross browser HTML5 web-based collaborative replay, annotation and discussion extension of the award winning open source Synote which has since 2008 made web-based recordings easier to access, search, manage, and exploit for learners, teachers and others. While Synote enables users to create comments in ‘Synmarks’ synchronized with any point in a recording it does not support users to comment on these Synmarks in a discussion thread. Synote Discussion supports commenting on Synmarks stored as discussions in its own database and published as Linked data so they are available for Synote or other systems to use. This paper explains the requirements and design of Synote Discussion, presents the results of a usability study and summarises conclusions and future planned wor

A vectorial variational mode solver and its application to piecewise constant and diffused waveguides

    Get PDF
A Variational Vectorial Mode Solver for 3-D dielectric waveguides with arbitrary 2-D crosssections is proposed. It is based on expansion of each component of a mode profile as a superposition of some a priori defined functions defined on one coordinate axis times some unknown continuous coefficient functions, defined on the other axis. By applying a variational restriction procedure the unknown coefficient functions are determined as an optimum approximation of the true vectorial mode profile. A couple of examples illustrate the performance of the method
