The purpose of this study was to identify factors, using the Health Belief Model (HBM) associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD) medication stockpiling for disaster preparedness among PD patients receiving home care services. The survey was conducted through an anonymous, self-administered postal questionnaire between March and September 2013, targeting all 1,398 members of Japan Parkinson’s Disease Association in nine prefectures in East Japan including the Hokuriku region. The analysis included 571 valid responses (40.8%). The results of a binary logistic regression analysis indicated that three of the modifying factors in the HBM, “possession of a disability certificate,” “bringing a medicine notebook or information sheet when going out,” and “awareness of the possibility of a future disaster” were significantly associated with stockpiling behavior. The “Cues to Action” factor (“encouragement from others or information promoting the stockpiling of medication”) was also significantly associated. However, the other constructs in the HBM, “Susceptibility,” “Severity,” “Perceived Threat,” “Barriers,” and “Benefits,” did not show significant association. We concluded that encouragement of stockpiling behavior from healthcare professionals and the PD Association, making a habit of always bringing a medicine notebook when going out, and raising awareness of the possibility of a disaster are useful in promoting medication stockpiling among PD patients

In this paper, regional promotion and depopulated district policies in Japan were organized, to enable an understanding of the issues of recent regional revitalization. As a result, the following problems were identified. The regional revitalization policies fail to make use of the spontaneous community development that has accumulated, and t revitalization has been superseded by the problem of population decline. These revitalization policies are unlikely to result in a process for rebuilding communities. I focused on the existence of “depopulated districts within regions” between depopulated areas and urban areas and considered the characteristics and issues of those areas through a case study of Akamatsu district, Kamigori-town, Hyogo Prefecture.I suggest that " depopulated districts within regions" have the potential for consider the "shrinking strategy with dignity" model. The shrinking strategy with dignity model requires a balance between the reductions like space and the process of community activities. Finally, during conversations with residents, it was found that residents need an effective tool to implement the "shrinking strategy with dignity" model.特集:尊厳ある縮退とコミュニテ

Bone Marrow Allograft Rejection Mediated by a Novel Murine NK Receptor, NKG2I

Natural killer (NK) cells mediate bone marrow allograft rejection. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying such a rejection remain elusive. In previous analyses, it has been shown that NK cells recognize allogeneic target cells through Ly-49s and CD94/NKG2 heterodimers. Here, we describe identification and characterization of a novel murine NK receptor, NKG2I, belonging to the NKG2 family. NKG2I, which was composed of 226 amino acids, showed ∼40% homology to the murine NKG2D and CD94 in the C-type lectin domain. Flow cytometric analysis with anti-NKG2I monoclonal antibody (mAb) revealed that expression of NKG2I was largely confined to NK and NKT cells, but was not seen in T cells. Furthermore, anti-NKG2I mAb inhibited NK cell–mediated cytotoxicity, whereas cross-linking of NKG2I enhanced interleukin 2– and interleukin 12–dependent interferon-γ production. Similarly, the injection of anti-NKG2I mAb before the allogeneic bone marrow transfer in vivo impinged on the function of NKG2I, resulting in the enhanced colony formation in the spleen. NKG2I is a novel activating receptor mediating recognition and rejection of allogeneic target cells

First, the paper outlined the debate surrounding the shrinking population and the case studies of community rehabilitation and revitalization as background for dignified shrinkage, and then introduced the basic concepts of shrinkage and dignity for research and practice of shrinking with dignity. Next, as issues to be considered for promoting dignified shrinkage research and practice, the expansion of the target area, regional diagnosis, the process and time of the disappearance of communities, models on which dignified shrinkage relies, and the development of tools in the field of practice were discussed and theoretically prepared. Finally, the paper looked at the challenges of action research to accompany shrinking with dignity, and confirms the necessity of a folk approach inspired by Mingei movement.特集:人口減少への共創的アプローチ論文Research Articl

    CNVs in Three Psychiatric Disorders

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the similarities and differences in the roles of genic and regulatory copy number variations (CNVs) in bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Based on high-resolution CNV data from 8708 Japanese samples, we performed to our knowledge the largest cross-disorder analysis of genic and regulatory CNVs in BD, SCZ, and ASD. RESULTS: In genic CNVs, we found an increased burden of smaller (500 kb) exonic CNVs in SCZ/ASD. Pathogenic CNVs linked to neurodevelopmental disorders were significantly associated with the risk for each disorder, but BD and SCZ/ASD differed in terms of the effect size (smaller in BD) and subtype distribution of CNVs linked to neurodevelopmental disorders. We identified 3 synaptic genes (DLG2, PCDH15, and ASTN2) as risk factors for BD. Whereas gene set analysis showed that BD-associated pathways were restricted to chromatin biology, SCZ and ASD involved more extensive and similar pathways. Nevertheless, a correlation analysis of gene set results indicated weak but significant pathway similarities between BD and SCZ or ASD (r = 0.25–0.31). In SCZ and ASD, but not BD, CNVs were significantly enriched in enhancers and promoters in brain tissue. CONCLUSIONS: BD and SCZ/ASD differ in terms of CNV burden, characteristics of CNVs linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, and regulatory CNVs. On the other hand, they have shared molecular mechanisms, including chromatin biology. The BD risk genes identified here could provide insight into the pathogenesis of BD

Stable Operation of a 300-m Laser Interferometer with Sufficient Sensitivity to Detect Gravitational-Wave Events within our Galaxy

TAMA300, an interferometric gravitational-wave detector with 300-m baseline length, has been developed and operated with sufficient sensitivity to detect gravitational-wave events within our galaxy and sufficient stability for observations; the interferometer was operated for over 10 hours stably and continuously. With a strain-equivalent noise level of h5×1021/Hzh\sim 5 \times 10^{-21} /\sqrt{\rm Hz}, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30 is expected for gravitational waves generated by a coalescence of 1.4 MM_\odot-1.4 MM_\odot binary neutron stars at 10 kpc distance. %In addition, almost all noise sources which limit the sensitivity and which %disturb the stable operation have been identified. We evaluated the stability of the detector sensitivity with a 2-week data-taking run, collecting 160 hours of data to be analyzed in the search for gravitational waves.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Sounding-rocket microgravity experiments on alumina dust

Alumina (Al2O3) is believed to be the first major condensate to form in the gas outflow from oxygen-rich evolved stars because of the refractoriness and that alpha-Al2O3. (corundum, most stable polymorph) is a potential origin of a 13 mu m feature that appears close to stars. However, no one has directly reproduced the 13 mu m feature experimentally, and it has remained as a noteworthy unidentified infrared band. Here, we report nucleation experiments on Al2O3 nanoparticles monitored by a specially designed infrared spectrometer in the microgravity environment of a sounding rocket. The conditions approximate to those around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The measured spectra of the nucleated Al2O3 show a sharp feature at a wavelength of 13.55 mu m and comparable in width to that observed near oxygen-rich AGB stars. Our finding that alpha-Al(2)O(3 )nucleates under certain condition provides a solid basis to elaborate condensation models of dust around oxygen-rich evolved stars
