Objectives : This paper aims to identify the significance and potential of using literature in nursing education in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom through a brief overview of literature-based education for medical and nursing students in the U.S. and the U.K. Methods : First, the paper summarizes the history of literature-based education for medicine and nursing students in the U.S. and the U.K. Then, examples are presented of literary works that are expected to be effective teaching materials in future literature-based education for nursing students, and the main contents of these works are summarized. Conclusions : An overview of the increasing number of papers on this topic reveals that it is essential for medical and nursing students not only to have a sufficient amount of basic knowledge in the medical field, but also to have ample opportunities to acquire awareness of the significance of understanding patients' feelings and dealing with ethical issues. We suggest that literature-based English classes are not only effective for improving the English skills of Japanese nursing students, but also for encouraging students to consider patients' feelings and to promote reflective thinking. Further studies on effective methods of literature-based English education for nursing students in the EFL classroom are necessary.

Evaluation Capacity Development for Educational Development: Case Study of the Policy-level Evaluations of Japan’s ODA in the Education Sector

    Get PDF
Education policies and systems have been experiencing increasing pressure to show greater accountability and effectiveness (OECD, 2007). In Japan, under the School Education Law and the Government Policy Evaluation Act, thousands of evaluations are conducted at various levels of education and educational administration every year. If the results are not used, there would be limited meaning in doing evaluation. In order to strengthen the use of evaluations, the quality of evaluations needs to be enhanced to meet stakeholders’ needs. The study used meta-evaluation of Japan’s educational cooperation policies to understand how evaluation results are used and what factors are hindering. Japan’s new education cooperation policy states that Japan provides support in light of “Japan’s strengths in its education system,” which have still been vaguely understood. To create evidence to clarify “Japan’s strengths in its education system” is expected role of evaluation. The conceptual framework for administering and using evaluations, as well as some thoughts about its potential uses and applications should be developed by providing research on evaluation with practical case studies to improve quality of evaluations and evaluation results

Rerouting a major Indonesian mining road to spare nature and reduce development costs

Road-infrastructure projects are expanding rapidly worldwide while penetrating into previously undisturbed forests. In Sumatra, Indonesia, a planned 88-km-long mining road for transporting coal would imperil the Harapan Forest, the island's largest surviving tract of lowland rainforest. Such roads often lead to increased forest encroachment and illegal logging, fires, poaching, and mining. To evaluate the potential impact of the proposed road, we first manually mapped all existing roads inside and around the Harapan Forest using remote-sensing imagery. We then calculated the expected increase in forest loss from three proposed mining-road routes using a metric based on travel-time mapping. Finally, we used least-cost-path analyses to identify new routes for the road that would minimize forest disruption and road-construction costs. We found that road density inside and nearby the Harapan Forest is already 3-4 times higher than official data sources indicate. Based on our analyses, each of the three proposed mining-road routes would lead to 3,000-4,300 ha of additional forest loss from human encroachment plus another 424 ha lost from road construction itself. We propose new routes for the mining road that would result in up to 3,321 ha less forest loss with markedly lower construction costs than any other planned route. We recommend approaches such as ours, using least-cost-path analysis, to minimize the environmental and financial costs of major development projects

This study investigated the effectiveness of Bodywork to become more assertive. Bodywork helps us relax body and mind, and also pay attention to felt sense. Furthermore Bodywork helps us raise self-esteem.This study examined the hypothesis that Bodywork helps us raise assertiveness with felt sense and self-esteem as mediators. 25 undergraduate students participated in three weekly sessions of Bodywork program. Each session lasted 90minutes.Three questionnaires on felt sense,self-esteem, and assertiveness were administered three times; pre, post, and a follow-up. Results suggested that Bodywork helped catch felt sense, and raise self-esteem,and that Bodywork tended to help raise assertiveness especially in forming connections with friends

Long-term follow-up of an individual with vitamin B6-dependent seizures

We report on a 31-year-old female with vitamin B6-dependent seizures whose seizure onset was in the neonatal period. Her elder brother had the same disorder and died in infancy. Administration of vitamin B6 was initiated in the postnatal period. At the age of 12 years 1 month, 2 months after withdrawal of vitamin B6, visual seizures began to occur frequently. Myoclonic seizures and occasional generalized convulsive seizures were also observed. At the same time, photoparoxysmal response and spontaneous diffuse spike–wave bursts were seen on her EEG. Myoclonic seizures were provoked by intermittent photic stimulation during the EEG. It is distinctive that visual seizures were one of the main seizure types in this patient, that her clinical course was relatively benign, and that she has normal intellectual outcome.</p
