    Domain-Specific Web Search with Keyword Spices

    Domain-specific web search engines are effective tools for reducing the difficulty in acquiring information from the web. Existing methods for building domain-specific web search engines require human expertise or specific facilities. However, we can build a domain-specific search engine simply by adding domain specific keywords called "keyword spices" to the user's input query and forwarding it to a generalpurpose web search engine. Keyword spices can be effectively discovered from web documents using machine learning technologies. This paper will describe domain-specific web search engines that use keyword spices for locating cooking recipes, restaurants, and used cars. To fully automate the construction of domain-specific search engines, we also present trials of using web pages in an existing web directory as training examples

    Three-dimensional localization and mapping for mobile robot in disaster environments

    To relieve damages of earthquake disaster, &#34;The Special Project for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation in Urban Areas&#34; have been kicked off in Japan. Our research group is a part of the sub-project &#34;modeling of disaster environment for search and rescue&#34; since 2002. In this project, our group aims to develop a three-dimensional mapping's algorithm that is installed in a mobile robot to search victims in a collapsed building. To realize this mission, it is important to map environment information, and also the mapping requires localization simultaneously. (This is called &#34;SLAM problem&#34;.) In this research, we use three-dimensional map by laser range finder, and we also estimate its location in a global map using correlation technique. In this paper, we introduce our localization and mapping method, and we report a result of preparatory experiment for localization. </p

    Mental deterioration in childhood epilepsy

    Mental retardation is detected in 20-30% of children with epilepsy at hospitals specializing in treatment of childhood epilepsy. However, the incidence of mental deterioration in childhood epilepsy is not high. In this study, mental deterioration was found in 52 (1.8%) of the 2,880 children with epilepsy at Okayama University Hospital. The patients showing mental deterioration mostly suffered from specific epileptic syndromes, such as West syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy and epilepsy with continuous spike-waves during slow wave sleep. These types of epilepsy show generalized electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. It is presumed that mental deterioration is caused by the total effects of prolonged diffuse EEG abnormalities and the age of the patients. Antiepileptic drugs exert a relatively minor effect on mental deterioration.</p

    Nonadiabatic nonlinear non-Hermitian quantized pumping

    We analyze a quantized pumping in a nonlinear non-Hermitian photonic system with nonadiabatic driving. The photonic system is made of a waveguide array, where the distances between adjacent waveguides are modulated. It is described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model together with a saturated nonlinear gain term and a linear loss term. A topological interface state between the topological and trivial phases is stabilized by the combination of a saturated nonlinear gain term and a linear loss term. We study the pumping of the topological interface state. We define the transfer-speed ratio ω/Ω\omega /\Omega by the ratio of the pumping speed % \omega of the center of mass of the wave packet to the driving speed Ω \Omega of the topological interface. It is quantized as ω/Ω=1\omega /\Omega =1 in the adiabatic limit. It remains to be quantized for slow driving even in the nonadiabatic regime, which is a nonadiabatic quantized pump. On the other hand, there is almost no pump for fast driving. We find a transition in pumping as a function of the driving speed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Evoked potentials in patients with Angelman syndrome

    Evoked potentials were studied in four cases with Angelman syndrome. Chromosome 15ql1-13 deletion was proved in two cases and paternal uniparental disomy was proved in the rest. Prolonged photo-evoked eyelid microvibration latencies were noted in all four, while visual evoked potential latencies remained within normal limits in three of four. Interpeak latencies of wave I to wave V in auditory brainstem response were prolonged in two of four. Short latency somatosensory evoked potential was examined in two cases and prolonged interpeak latency of wave P3 to wave N1 was noted in one case. Brink reflex was examined in one case and prolonged R2 latency was noted. These findings suggest that the brainstem is disturbed in cases with Angelman syndrome

    Light energy allocation at PSII under field light conditions: How much energy is lost in NPQ-associated dissipation?

    In the field, plants are exposed to fluctuating light, where photosynthesis occurs under conditions far from a steady state. Excess energy dissipation associated with energy quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qE) functions as an efficient photo-protection mechanism in photosystem II. PsbS is an important regulator of qE, especially for the induction phase of qE. Beside the regulatory energy dissipation, some part of energy is lost through relaxation of excited chlorophyll molecules. To date, several models to quantify energy loss through these dissipative pathways in PSII have been proposed. In this short review, we compare and evaluate these models for PSII energy allocation when they are applied to non-steady state photosynthesis. As a case study, an investigation on energy allocation to qE-associated dissipation at PSII under non-steady state photosynthesis using PsbS-deficient rice transformants is introduced. Diurnal and seasonal changes in PSII energy allocation in rice under natural light are also presented. Future perspective of studies on PSII energy allocation is discussed
