    Dispersion cancellation in high resolution two-photon interference

    The dispersion cancellation observed in Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between frequency-entangled photon pairs has been the basis of quantum optical coherence tomography and quantum clock synchronization. Here we explore the effect of phase dispersion on ultranarrow HOM dips. We show that the higher-order dispersion, the line width of the pump laser, and the spectral shape of the parametric fluorescence have a strong effect on the dispersion cancellation in the high-resolution regime with several experimental verifications. Perfect dispersion cancellation with a linewidth of 3\mu m is also demonstrated through 25 mm of water.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Background:Recently, it has been reported that mouth guards (MGs), which reduce the incidence and severity of traumatic oral injuries in contact sports, may actually affect sports performance. We have observed that a majority of subjects showed improved dynamic visual acuity during head rotation when using a MG, but subjects who were unwilling to use a MG showed the opposite effect. Thus, we hypothesized that unpleasant sensations due to MGs may decrease sports performance.Methods:In this study, we measured autonomic nervous system activity to evaluate unpleasant sensations objectively and quantitatively by measuring the pupillary flash response (PFR) and heart rate variability (HRV), before, during, and after wearing 3- and 5-mm-thick custom-made MGs in 10 healthy subjects.Results:It was found that the 5-mm MG had a higher incidence of unpleasant sensations (50% of subjects) than did the 3-mm MG (10%). PFR (not HRV) analysis showed that both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activities increased in subjects with unpleasant sensations.Conclusions:We suggest that the unpleasant sensation induced this unusual autonomic nervous system response, which could not be detected by traditional methods such as HRV analysis.     Cancer Stem Cells and Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1 in Liver Cancers

    The cancer stem cell (CSC) theory posits that a small population of cells with stem cell-like features is responsible for tumor growth, resistance, and recurrence in many malignancies. This theory could be a useful paradigm for designing innovative targeted drug therapies. Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) as the predominant forms. Hepatic stem/progenitor cells are believed to be the origin of HCCs and CCAs; however, this remains a controversial topic. Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) is the main enzymatic system responsible for the clearance of acetaldehyde from the hepatocytes in the liver tissue. Therefore, ALDH1 has been suggested to be a potential, biological and CSC marker in liver cancers. We here provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of CSCs in liver and the role of ALDH1 in the development and progression of liver cancers and discuss its potential value as a prognostic and diagnostic biomarker

Increase norepinephrine concentration secondary to decreased activity of monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) in hippocampus was observed in this model rats.     Pharmacovigilance evaluation of the relationship between impaired glucose metabolism and BCR‐ABL inhibitor use by using an adverse drug event reporting database

    Breakpoint cluster region‐Abelson murine leukemia (BCR‐ABL) inhibitors markedly improve the prognosis of chronic myeloid leukemia. However, high treatment adherence is necessary for successful treatment with BCR‐ABL inhibitors. Therefore, an adequate understanding of the adverse event profiles of BCR‐ABL inhibitors is essential. Although many adverse events are observed in trials, an accurate identification of adverse events based only on clinical trial results is difficult because of strict entry criteria or limited follow‐up durations. In particular, BCR‐ABL inhibitor‐induced impaired glucose metabolism remains controversial. Pharmacovigilance evaluations using spontaneous reporting systems are useful for analyzing drug‐related adverse events in clinical settings. Therefore, we conducted signal detection analyses for BCR‐ABL inhibitor‐induced impaired glucose metabolism by using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. Signals for an increased reporting rate of impaired glucose metabolism were detected only for nilotinib use, whereas these signals were not detected for other BCR‐ABL inhibitors. Subgroup analyses showed a clearly increased nilotinib‐associated reporting rate of impaired glucose metabolism in male and younger patients. Although FAERS‐ and JADER‐based signal detection analyses cannot determine causality perfectly, our study suggests the effects on glucose metabolism are different between BCR‐ABL inhibitors and provides useful information for the selection of appropriate BCR‐ABL inhibitors

    Development of a handy oil-skimmer

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科環境創成金沢大学工学部Recently marine-pollution by high-viscous oil leaked from wrecked ships has been becoming a remarkable problem in the world. Japan government is renewing old oil recovery vessels with new concept. The oil recovery vessels are available on the open sea, but unworkable in a narrow space. We have developed a handy oil recovery system which is portable and used for supplementing the weak point of the oil recovery vessel. The system consists of a water jet oil-skimmer and a gravity oil/water separator. The oil skimmer has a high-pressure water jet pump inside the suction mouth and a long shaft which is used as a conduit of the recovered fluid as well as a spring-hanging device which enables an operator to easily manipulate it from the deck of the ship. After 3-year research and experiments, we have completed the system successfully. The system will be soon installed on our oil recovery vessels. © 2004 IEEE

    Development of monitoring tool by pharmacists

    Purpose: Drug side effects often lead to serious outcomes. Administration of second-generation antipsychotics has resulted in diabetic ketoacidosis and diabetic coma leading to death. Therefore, pharmacists are required to collect information on clinical test values, determine the appropriate test timing, and coordinate with doctors for further clinical laboratory orders, all of which are labor- and time-intensive tasks. In this study, we developed a side effect-monitoring tool and aimed to clarify the influence and efficiency of monitoring side effects by using the tool in patients taking atypical antipsychotics in whom it is necessary to check clinical test values such as blood sugar levels. Methods: We extracted clinical test values for patients treated with second-generation antipsychotics from electronic medical records. The test values are automatically displayed in the side effect grade classification specified by CTCAE ver. 4.0. A database was constructed using scripts to provide alerts for the timing of clinical testing. The pharmacist used this tool to confirm clinical test values for patients taking medication and requested the physician to inspect orders based on the appropriate test timings. Results: The management tool reduced the pharmacists’ effort in collecting information on patients’ prescription status and test values. It enabled patients to undergo tests at the appropriate time according to the progression of glucose metabolism and allowed for easy monitoring of side effects. Conclusion: The results suggested that regardless of pharmacists’ experience or skill, the introduction of this tool enables centralization of side-effect monitoring and can contribute to proper drug use

    Definitive and Indeterminate Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infection in Adults with Community-acquired Pneumonia: A Prospective Observational Study

    Rationale: Pneumonia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is associated with high mortality and requires antipseudomonal treatment. Because PA can colonize the respiratory tract, the diagnosis of pathogenic PA involvement is challenging.Objectives: To determine the prevalence of definitive and indeterminate PA infection in community-acquired pneumonia, to describe the clinical and microbiological profiles, and to estimate the burden of unnecessary antipseudomonal drug prescriptions.Methods: We prospectively enrolled 2,701 patients with community-acquired pneumonia. Using stringent criteria for diagnosing PA pneumonia, we generated the following three groups: 1) definitive PA, 2) indeterminate PA, and 3) non-PA pneumonia.Results: The prevalence of definitive PA pneumonia was 0.9% (n = 25), and that of indeterminate PA pneumonia was 4.9% (n = 131). Considerable clinical differences were observed among the groups. Patients with definitive PA pneumonia were more likely to have a history of tuberculosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/bronchiectasis and had a higher 30-day mortality (28%) than patients with non-PA pneumonia. Patients with indeterminate PA pneumonia were more likely to have comorbidities than patients with non-PA pneumonia. More than half of the patients with indeterminate PA and 25% of the patients with non-PA pneumonia were treated with an antipseudomonal drug. No patients with definitive PA pneumonia had multidrug resistance.Conclusions: In this population, the prevalence of community-acquired pneumonia due to PA was low. The clinical features and 30-day mortality rates of patients with indeterminate PA pneumonia were different from those of patients with definitive PA pneumonia. Most of the prescribed antipseudomonal drugs for patients with community-acquired pneumonia were potentially unnecessary
