The relationships between corporate meeting planner's personality traits and their choices of meeting places

    Get PDF
This study is to determine the influence of personality on the novelty preference for corporate meeting destination choice. The Big-Five model of personality which consists of five traits namely openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism was employed to operationalise the personality construct. A total of 75 corporate meeting planners drawn from public listed service organisations were involved. The main method of data collection was questionnaire survey and multiple regression analysis was employed as the main statistical analysis. The results revealed that only openness (positively) and agreeableness (negatively) contributed significantly to the prediction of novelty preference for corporate meeting destination choice. This study, which also seeks to determine the relationships between some demographical variables and novelty preference, found that demographical information is not a good predictor of meeting destination choice. The main implication of this study is pertaining to the segmentation and targeting of the corporate meeting market. This study also helps in bridging the gap between tourism marketing and organisational research

This study explores the environmental scanning practices among 5-star hotels in Malaysia. The purpose of the research is to understand on how this activity is conducted, what were the processes involved, who is responsible for conducting, when it is conducted, why the processes are conducted and what types of information were collected. This research used a qualitative approach where data were collected through face to face interviews using semi-structured interview. The results provide a better understanding of the environmental scanning activities in hotels with a particular emphasis on the extent of comprehensiveness of Strategic Environmental Scanning Information system, structure and processes. This finding also describes the level of depth and breadth of the information collected for the general environment, task environment and specific environment, as part of the initial steps such as identifying information needed and the information source for the strategic environmental scanning information system activities

Environmental variables and performance: evidence from the hotel industry in Malaysia

The growth and performance of the Malaysian hotel industry depend heavily on the growth and performance of the other Malaysian economic sectors, especially manufacturing and services. The recent 5 years saw the Malaysian hotel industry going through drastic changes, with regard to its external environment, largely due to the greater extent of volatility in the environment and the increasing level of uncertainties in the world’s economy. Organizational internal processes, systems and strategies should be based upon assessment of the external environment. The level of environmental uncertainties caused by global environmental turbulence was represented by an erratic rate of economic growth. In parallel, the environment can be expected to affect organizational choices because the maintenance of organizations depends upon some degree of exchange with outside partners. An organization, which depends on the environment, is not in itself a problem, as long as the flow of required resources is stable and assured. Problems arise when the flow of resources becomes uncertain due to unpredictable changes in the environment. These changes are assumed to have an immediate impact on the hotel industry’s rate of growth and performance. Logically then, there should be a relationship between the hotel industry’s performance and growth rate, measured in sales volume, with the economic growth rate (the Gross National Product). This paper identifies the relationships between external environment volatility and industry performance among the 5, 4 and 3-star hotel categories during the same period

An observer design of nonlinear quarter car model for active suspension system by using backstepping controller

    No full text
This paper presents the use of backstepping controller in order to construct an active suspension for a quarter car model with observer design. The implementation of backstepping controller is presented in non-linear quarter car model for active suspension system. The movement of the rotational motion of arm has been taking into consideration for this system which has been neglected by the linear system. Backstepping control is a recursive control procedure which breaks a design problem for the full system into a sequence of a design problem for lower order systems [1]. The performance of the proposed controller will be compared with the linear quadratic regulator controller to help validate the result
