    Fano Resonances in Mid-Infrared Spectra of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    This work revisits the physics giving rise to the carbon nanotubes phonon bands in the mid- infrared. Our measurements of doped and undoped samples of single-walled carbon nanotubes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the phonon bands exhibit an asymmetric lineshape and that their effective cross-section is enhanced upon doping. We relate these observations to electron-phonon coupling or, more specifically, to a Fano resonance phenomenon. We note that only the dopant-induced intraband continuum couples to the phonon modes and that defects induced in the sidewall increase the resonance probabilities.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and 1 Supplementary Information File (in pdf

    The prevalence and extent of parasitic and fungal pneumonias in horses remain unknown. Parascaris equorum is common among foals and young horses. As horses are only occasional hosts for Dictyocaulus arnfieldi, their contamination occurs when they are grazing together with donkeys. The severity of the respiratory signs in parasitic pneumonia is variable, and fecal examination is often inconclusive. Such infestations can be treated successfully with anthelmintics. In France, fungal pneumonias are mainly caused by Aspergillus sp in adult horses and by Pneumocystis sp in foals. These pathogens generally develop in immunocompromised patients. Clinical signs are variable and rarely suggestive of fungal pneumonia. Despite treatment with antifungal drugs, the prognosis is often guarded.La prévalence et l'importance des pneumonies parasitaires et fongiques chez le cheval ne sont pas bien connues. Parascaris equorum est un parasite fréquent affectant les poulains et les jeunes chevaux. Les chevaux sont des hôtes occasionnels de Dictyocaulus arnfieldi qui se contaminent lors de pâturage commun avec des ânes. Les signes respiratoires de pneumonies parasitaires sont de sévérité variable et le diagnostic par analyse coprologique est souvent infructueux. L'administration d'un anthelminthique constitue un traitement efficace. En France, les Aspergillus sont les champignons les plus fréquemment impliqués dans les pneumonies fongiques du cheval adulte et les Pneumocystis, dans celles du poulain. Le plus souvent, ces pathogènes prolifèrent chez des patients dont l'immunité est compromise. Les signes cliniques sont variables, rendant la suspicion clinique difficile. Le pronostic est réservé malgré l'administration de molécules antifongiques

    Building a CTU Orientation Handbook iPad® application for first-year residents

    Background: The General Internal Medicine Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU) is a challenging rotation for new residents and the optimal format of orientation has not been determined. We hypothesized that an iPad®application (app) would be a useful reference tool after residents completed their traditional large group orientation. Methods: Postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) residents were sent a link to download the free app one week before the start of their rotation. A pre-usage survey at initial login collected basic demographics. Usage data was collected to determine the sections, duration, and the timeframe from which the app was utilized.Results: Pre-usage survey data revealed that 63% of participants were female, 69% felt the app would improve orientation, and 94% were comfortable using mobile technology for medical education. Usage data showed “Teaching Sessions and Schedules,” “The Consult Note,” and “Admission Orders” were the three sections most commonly used. The most usage was during the evening call shift (10pm to 6am), followed by the morning shift (6am to 5pm).   Conclusion: The CTU Orientation App was a useful supplement to the traditional orientation. Researchers may not be able to predict what content would be most valuable in an iPad® app, thus pre-development needs-assessments and usage feedback are crucial.

    Multi-scale analysis of compressible viscous and rotating fluids

    We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter \ep. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account

    Soixante ans après le Rapport Parent, le chemin parcouru par le Québec au chapitre de la scolarisation est remarquable. Et ce succès, on le doit, entre autres, aux bibliothèques publiques. Véritables pierres d’assise de la démocratisation de la connaissance, les bibliothèques publiques sont des portes ouvertes sur l’apprentissage, la culture et l’information. D’ailleurs, les initiatives décrites dans ce document démontrent comment les bibliothèques publiques nourrissent encore aujourd’hui la curiosité de millions de Québécois et de Québécoises comme d’innombrables personnes partout dans le monde. L’heure est venue de miser sur ces acquis pour faire du Québec une véritable société apprenante. Une société où apprendre toute la vie est inscrit dans l’ADN collectif ; où l’apprentissage – par la lecture notamment – est encouragé dès le plus jeune âge ; où le développement d’un esprit critique est valorisé, tout comme la capacité à analyser des problèmes et des situations complexes.Accessibles gratuitement, les bibliothèques, comme lieux physiques et maintenant virtuels, offrent de remarquables accès aux savoirs et constituent à cet égard un atout essentiel. L’équipe de BAnQ nourrit pour sa part l’objectif de stimuler l’apprentissage par la culture à travers la découverte, l’exploration, la participation, l’expérimentation et, ultimement, l’épanouissement de la personne. Pour ce faire, BAnQ compte non seulement mener à bien sa transformation numérique en misant sur la numérisation et les services en ligne, mais aussi bonifier l’expérience des citoyens en favorisant la découvrabilité et la médiation de ses collections.     Implications of Proprotein Convertases in Ovarian Cancer Cell Proliferation and Tumor Progression: Insights for PACE4 as a Therapeutic Target

    AbstractProprotein convertases are a family of kexin-like serine proteases that process proteins at single and multiple basic residues. Among the predicted and identified PC substrates, an increasing number of proteins having functions in cancer progression indicate that PCs may be potential targets for antineoplastic drugs. In support of this notion, we identified PACE4 as a vital PC involved in prostate cancer proliferation and progression, contrasting with the other co-expressed PCs. The aim of the present study was to test the importance of PCs in ovarian cancer cell proliferation and tumor progression. Based on tissue-expression profiles, furin, PACE4, PC5/6 and PC7 all displayed increased expression in primary tumor, ascites cells and metastases. These PCs were also expressed in variable levels in three model ovarian cell lines tested, namely SKOV3, CAOV3 and OVCAR3 cells. Since SKOV3 cells closely represented the PC expression profile of ovarian cancer cells, we chose them to test the effects of PC silencing using stable gene-silencing shRNA strategy to generate knockdown SKOV3 cells for each expressed PC. In vitro and in vivo assays confirmed the role of PACE4 in the sustainment of SKOV3 cell proliferation, which was not observed with the other three PCs. We also tested PACE4 peptide inhibitors on all three cell lines and observed consequent reduced cell proliferation which was correlated with PACE4 expression. Overall, these data support a role of PACE4 in promoting cell proliferation in ovarian cancer and provides further evidence for PACE4 as a potential therapeutic target
